Un tat du texte (1870-1880, un essaide constitution de sa thorie), La Haye-Paris, Mouton, 1973 tudiait 200 romans parus Paris entre 1870 et 1880.Autant que ses conclusions, c'est l'intrt de travailler surdes corpus de grande taille qui avait fait date.Il ne s'esttoutefois pas senti oblig de capitaliserl-dessus. Sansmme parler de ses nombreux entretiens, ni de sonindfectible engagement pour tout ce qui permettait depromouvoir l'intelligibilit de la production populaire, soncriture a t multiple (traduction, compte-rendus,prfaces), prolifique (surtout en articles) et a abord denombreux thmes : Dumas, la photographie, Jarry, Tppferet bien des aspects de la culture populaire. Et que dire deFantastique-fiction(Paris, PUF, coll. criture, 1992),avecson point de vue singulier ? Sonmeilleur essai sans doute,emblmatisant queCharles avait autant le got del'rudition et de l'empirisme descriptif que le got pourthoriser les romans pop, autant legotde la recherche quele got de l'criture. Mme sil tait familier de Dracula etde bien dautres monstres tapis dans notre imaginairecollectif, cest en fait le crabe qui aura eu raison de luicejeudi 14 mai 2015.Avec tristesse,Marginalia se devaitde souligner ce dpart dfinitif.

Jol Champetier tait un crivain de science-fiction et defantasy, rdacteur en chef de la revue Solaris.

Mes premiers contacts avec Jol lont t parlintermdiaire de Requiem. Fan de science-fiction, il sestabonn mon fanzine dont il tait un des premierssupporters. Puis, je me souviens de lavoir rencontr unepremire fois dans un Salon du livre, Montral, une sortede grand Duduche chevelu sympathique, souriant, un peuintimid par sa rencontre avec le Grand Gougou lubrique(timide lui aussi...). Je pense avoir t le premier publierun texte de Jol, un conte bref intitul Dfectuosit(presquune page quand mme !) dans le numro 25, textedont je me suis toujours souvenu parce que ctait un petitrcit de SF trs original dans la forme, la fois tragique ethumoristique, pince-sans-rire comme pouvait ltre notreami ! En 2000, intressante inversion des rles, jai soumisma premire nouvelle Solaris et cest Jol qui en tait ledirecteur littraire.Je nai jamais beaucoup frquent Jol Champetier qui atoujours habit sur cette autre plante quon appelle parfoisla campagne. Nous nous croisions loccasion dans lesBoral, les salons du livre ou autre vnement public. Biensr, nous avions aussi des contacts professionnels. Pourmoi, Jol tait lexemple parfait du bon gars, toujourssouriant, toujours aimable, jamais nerv, philosophe surles bords...Mais attention ne pas confondre bon etbonasse.Pour diriger une revue il faut du jugement, du tact, unerserve inpuisable de patience (et de sacres ...!), de lafermet. Il faut parfois savoir dire non tous ces aspirantscrivains qui se prennent pour le nouveau Kim Robinsonmais ne matrisent pas encore laccord du participe pass !Jol tait parfait dans son rle de rdacteur en chef et il seradifficile remplacer. Bon voyage dans lhyperralit !
