The Garden is openfrom 08:00 to 17:30during mid-winter

and until 20:00 in summer

Set up in 1635 at the instigation of JeanHroard, chief physician to Louis XIII, and Guyde La Brosse, physician in ordinary, the royalgarden of medicinal plants became the Jardindes Plantes (or Botanical Garden) followingthe Revolution. In the same spirit of change,the Convention established the Museum ofNatural History in June 1793.

From the start, this great institution for

higher education and research has played amajor national and international role in thedevelopment of natural history.Today, the Museum remains a favouredinstitution for multi-disciplinary research inthe fields of natural and human science.Intimately linked to its research function, theMuseum also fulfils a heritage-related mission:that of preserving and caring for importantcollections. These include several tens ofmillions of specimens and items that make upa treasury for all of humankind.

The distribution of knowledge, as well aseducational and cultural programmes, formsa complement to its missions in the fields ofresearch, expert assessment and conservation.The original character of the Museum is basedon these complementary aspects, and thusforms a formidable scientific, educational andcultural tool.It awaits you, and invites you to share in itsriches.
