Unit accompanies points of view that are committed and

open to debating ideas. It features all types of documen-

tary writing and broaches all areas: History, Investigation,

Society, Culture, Geopolitics, Environment, Economy and

Politics. The editorial line intends to be at the heart of the

challenges that face our societies and make them evolve.

Arte is a Franco-German television station, and Europe is at

the centre of our preoccupations, as we compare countries,

lifestyles, and cultures to better apprehend our differences.

To the crisis, a single response: the search for standards,

understanding the world in which we live, and knowledge

as a universal value.

The creation of two new areas, ‘Société’ and ‘Culture’,

contributes to supplementing these ideas. It is necessary

to know the past in order to understand the present. our

heritage and values explain the commitment of Man in

Exploration du Port de Marseille à travers deuxœuvres du peintre Joseph vernet (1714-1789).les deux célèbres tableaux de Joseph vernet montrant le port de Marseille en 1754 sont parmi les plus réussis de la série des 15 toiles géantes commandées par louis xv à l’un des meilleurs peintres de son époque. l’un est présent au musée de la Marine de Paris, l’autre au musée du louvre. Il s’agit en fait de deux tableaux complémentaires, « l’entrée du Port de Marseille » et « l’Intérieur du port de Marseille vu du Pavillon de l’Horloge du Parc ». Ils forment ce qu’on appellerait en langage cinématographique moderne « champ » et « contre-champ ». le pavillon de l’Horloge d’où a été peinte la première vue de Marseille se voit au centre de la seconde, tout au fond du port.

Exploration of the port of Marseilles through two works by the painter Joseph vernet (1714-1789). The two famous canvases by Joseph vernet showing the port of Marseilles in 1754 are amongst the most successful in a series of 15 gigantic canvases commissioned by louis xv from one of the finest painters of his era. one hangs in the Musée de la Marine in Paris, the other in the louvre and are, in fact, two complementary paintings: The Entrance to the Port of Marseilles and the Interior of the Port of Marseilles seen from the Pavilion of the Clock in the Park. They form what, in modern film language, would be called ‘angle’ and ‘reverse angle’. The Pavilion of the Clock, from where the first view of Marseilles was painted is seen at the centre of the second, way in the rear of the port.

Par le biais d’archives, de souvenirs, de scénettes et d’interventions insolentes de figures de la jeunesse d’aujourd’hui (Norman, Hugo tout seul), le film raconte la jeunesse à travers l’histoire et interroge cet état transitoire.

Ce qui est largement ignoré, c’est que ces chapeaux étaient tous confectionnés à Alessandria, village du Nord de l’Italie, qui n’a compté pendant cent vingt ans qu’une seule famille à la tête d’une entreprise fondée par Giuseppe borsalino, modeste chapelier ayant appris son métier à Paris dans les années 1850. le documentaire retracera l’histoire de la naissance d’un mythe, le borsalino, à travers la relation entre une entreprise familiale et l’imposante machine à fabriquer des légendes qu’est le cinéma.

The borsalino hat became an icon thanks to the cinema: in the golden age of Hollywood, everyone wore one. What is not widely known is that these hats were all made in Alessandria, a village in northern Italy. In 120 years, one family has been at the head of this business founded by Giuseppe borsalino, a modest hatter who had learnt his trade in Paris in the 1850s. The documentary will trace the history of the birth of a myth, the borsalino, through the relation between a family company and the cinema, that imposing machine for making legends.

Janek, 9, leaves Poland with his mother and younger brother to settle in Argentina, in the village of Azara, in the remote region of Misiones, whose population is, in large part, of Polish origin. Janek’s mother is sent to Argentina for two years by the Polish government, to give Polish lessons to the local population. In this foreign country, Janek has trouble finding his place. It is the transformation from a lost little boy into a young boy ready to confront the future that this lovely, uneasy film shows us with great narrative freedom in its atmospheric, pointillist way.

Mais à la fin de l’été, le camp est démantelé, et l’histoire avec Simon prend fin.

Throughout the duration of their love affair, vincent Dieutre filmed life from Simon’s window, at the Jaurès Métro station: passersby, automobile traffic and, above all, the encampment of Afghan refugees, whom he observed living beneath his lover’s windows. The seasons pass, the refugees seem to settle in. but at the end of the summer, the camp is dismantled, and the story with Simon comes to an end.

During the harsh winter that lasts six months, the vast plateaus of Mont lozère are deserted of any human presence and battered by ‘les tourmentes’, violent, blinding snowstorms that disorient people who find themselves prisoners of them. The inhabitants of surrounding hamlets who have got lost and disappeared during les tourmentes are called ‘égarés’, people who have gone astray. So long as their bodies are not found, it is said that they are wandering, hoping to find their way again. This film, visually very powerful, takes us to the heart of les tourmentes, such as they are lived and felt by the inhabitants of the hamlets of Mont lozère.
