THE YOUNG CHRONICLE Human Rights?! What are they?

For more than a week now, newspaper headlines have gone on and on about Baba Ramdev’s crusade against corruption. Prime time news slots on television have also been flooded with second-by-second accounts of the political drama where too many cooks just kept spoiling the broth. No matter which side said what, Pranks (our Achi Bachi) noticed that one argument was a recurring one. A lot of people seemed to be talking about how it is a basic ‘human right’ to protest peacefully and without any violence. As politicians, journalists and citizens are busy deliberating whether the police was right in pulling Baba Ramdev out of Delhi and shifting him to Haridwar , Pranks compiled a

small research on what exactly are human rights and what significance do they have in our lives.

What are Human Rights? As the name suggests, human rights are those basic rights which every human being can exercise. These include the right to live the way one wants to, work freely, think independently without any pressure, follow any religion, protest peacefully, etc. Human rights are universal in nature, which means that everyone- no matter what their race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, age, sex, political beliefs- is entitled to these rights.

When is International Human Rights Day celebrated? Each year, 10th December is observed as International Human Rights

Day by countries all across the world. On this very day, in the year 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This declaration is a guideline which all countries strive to abide by. The UDHR was signed in the aftermath of the Second World War that had led to tremendous death and destruction everywhere. The world felt the need for maintaining human dignity and protecting it by giving each individual certain fundamental rights- rightly known as ‘human rights.’

Human Rights in India India’s policy as a democratic sovereign nation is to uphold basic human rights of each citizen of the country. The Constitution of India enshrines six fundamental rights like right to

equality, freedom of speech and expression, freedom to practice any religion or profession, right against exploitation, etc. An independent organization called the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) looks into cases of human rights violation and acts accordingly. Cases of Human Rights Violation Although each person is entitled to basic human rights, there have

been times in the past when these rights were violated or curtailed.

When a state of Emergency was declared in India from 1975-77 on the directions of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, gross violation of human rights took place. Restrictions

were imposed not only on the people, but also the press (which must be free of any control at all to present a fair, unbiased view). People were arrested without any fault of theirs. Time and again India has seen riots breaking out against people of one religion or another. The Anti-Sikh riots of 1984 are a black spot in Indian history that led to the massacre of thousands of unarmed Sikhs by Hindu mobs. Then again, the Godhra violence of 2002 led to communal riots between Hindus and Muslims. Minorities have often had to face a lot of problems in our country, often accompanied with human rights violations. As responsible Acha Bachas, we all must respect each individual and never curtail their human rights. At the same time, we must claim our right to these basic provisions without succumbing to any pressure, ever.

When Rambo picked up the newspaper this Sunday, he came across a piece of news talking about the Annual General Meeting of a company called Infosys. This rang a bell in his head and he immediately

recalled the name ‘Narayan Murthy’, which is synonymous to Infosys in India.

Infosys is one of India’s fastest growing Information Technology (IT) service providers which caters to clients based not only in India but all across the globe. Mr. Narayan Murthy established the company in 1981 with the help of a few close associates.

Infosys was started with a meagre amount of Rs.10,000 which he borrowed from his wife Sudha Murthy. The front room of his own house served as Infosys' first office. Initially headquartered at Bombay, Infosys shifted base to Bangalore in 1983. Since then, it has been an uphill story for Infosys that grew by

leaps and bounds to scale unimaginable

heights under the leadership of Mr. Murthy. Mr. Murthy was born on August 20, 1946 in the picturesque town of Mysore. His full name is Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy. After attending a government school, he pursued electrical engineering from University of Mysore and then Masters from IIT Kanpur. His modest roots combined with his dedication and single-minded hard work are the reasons behind his incredible success story. Mr. Murthy served as the founder CEO of Infosys for 21 long and eventful years. He articulated, designed and implemented the Global Delivery Model which has become the foundation for the huge success in IT services outsourcing from India. He also led the company through several key decisions including its listing on the Indian stock exchange. In August 2004,Time magazine listed him under “Global Tech Influentials” as one of the ten leaders who are helping shape the future of technology. In November 2006, Time again voted him as one of the Asians who have brought about revolutionary changes in Asia in the last 60 years.

Currently designated as the Chief Mentor and Chairman of Infosys, Mr. Murthy is set to retire on August 20th this year. As an entrepreneur who started small but with big dreams, he kept his head steady and did not let obstacles deter him. Indeed, we all must learn from the self-made,

SPORTS CHRONICLE Rambo Rejoices as Nadal Wins French Open yet again!!

Rambo was very happy as Nadal played the finals against Priyanka’s favourite Roger federer. The Spaniard displayed his top form as he defeated the swiss to win the French open 6th time equalling the record of Bjorn Borg.. The Spaniard emerged victorious 7-5 7-6 (7/3) 5-7 6-1 in a titanic encounter between arguably two of the best players the game has ever seen.

The match that went on through four sets saw the match swinging in federer’s direction during the third set. Although Federer seemed to put a foot down on the pedal to gain a comeback but Nadal never let it be too easy for Federer. During these moments i could see Rambo on the edge of his seats as he munched on his bowl of popcorn. The match was like a well scripted thriller that made the viewers wonder about the outcome. Although Federer was playing too well to lose the match but the 56 unforced errors during the event have some other stories to tell. “May be he is too afraid of my Spaniard champion!!!” exclaimed

a triumphant Rambo. Priyanka on the other hand always felt that Federer had an upper hand during the match and that it was only luck that made Nadal win the game. Federer accepted the defeat graciously. "But I thought Rafa played well. I think he dug deep to come back in the first set and get himself into the match. And also the second set.” He said in a post match interview.

Federer reached the final after finally stopping the Djokovic express who was undefeated in the championship so far. That match was also a splendid sight for all the fans of the game. Rafa on the other hand had to be the American Andy Murray in the semis to enter the finals of the championship. In other finals, China's Li Na became the first Asian player to win a grand slam singles title at the French Open against Francesca Schiavone . While in the men’s doubles Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor won the men's doubles at the French Open following a 7-6 (7/3) 3-6 6-4 triumph over Eduardo Schwank and Juan Sebastian Cabal. So this year’s Ronald Garros is over and all eyes are set on the next grand slam wimbeldon which would be played on a grass court. Priyanka is sure Federer will get revenge on Rafa this time.

Indian Cricket Top Notch

The Indian cricket team proved once again that they are the top team in the world after defeating the west Indian side 3 times in a row to seal the series against west indies. In the third match played at Sir Vivian Richards stadium at Antigua india defeated West Indies by 3 wickets after restricting west indies to a total of an average 225 for the loss of 8 wickets. India fielded well in the first innings and west Indian wickets fell at regular intervals. Rambo certainly congratulates Amit Mishra and Munaf Patel for taking 3 wickets each at the crucial moments of the game. During the second innings it was the 85 run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Harbhajan Singh that cruised India to a comfortable win at the loss of 7 wickets with 3 wickets to

spare. The coach was seen quite happy with Suresh Raina who handled the team in the absence of Priyanka’s favourite M.S.Dhoni. meanwhile Andre Russel was named the man of the match as he lifted his side from the tough time and prevented the match from being a totally one sided affair

During the last 2 weeks india won previous two one day matches as well as the sole 20 twenty match against the home team. India Defeated West Indies by 7 wickets and 4 wickets at queen’s park oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad in the 2 one day matches played there.

What does mean by " I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER THE SUM OF.........RUPEES?

I think everybody will have seen 10, 20, 50,....... Rupees note. In 10 Rupees note, a sentence is written " I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER OF THE SUM OF TEN RUPEES". Like wise in every rupee note this sentence is written. This just goes to show that each note is not a mere piece of paper, it has value attached to it.
