    ITS SO MUCH

    easier to be lazy, isnt

it? To sit on the couch

after a long stressfulday at work and flip

    through the channels

    watching various sing-

    ers, dancers, doctors

    and maybe even some

    loud mouths from Jer-

    sey flit across your flat

    screen TV, while you

sip an ice cold beer or

    glass of wine? Sure,

    thats easy, but what

kind of life is that really?

Dont get defensive here, I would never ask a questionthat I wouldnt ask myself. My answer? Not much of a life.

I dont know about you, but before I know it, Im going to

blink and be 40, then 50, then 60! If Im OK with being lazy

now, what will I have to show for myself in another 5 years,

10, 20? Not only will my body have declined, but my mind,

too, because, lets face it, most television shows dont ex-

    actly stimulate our brains.

Why is it that so many people are OK with living seden-

tary lives, eating fast food and drinking or feeding other ad-

dictions while life passes them by? If I had that answer, Id

probably have a book out and be a guest star on Oprah

    before she retires.

One thing is sure, its got to be a mental thing. The mindis a powerful thing and if you think you cant change, you

wont. If you need a little encouragement and direction to

living the fit and healthy life you know you should, read the

article on pgs. 30-31. It asks some questions that will help

you get more focused on what you can and cant do to get

    where you need to get.

Next read our cover story on Jeremy Jackson. He had it

all as Hobie (the son of David Hasselhoff on the hit show,

Baywatch ). He got paid handsomely to do what he loved

most. But then he got hooked on drugs and lost everything.

Proudly clean and sober since September 24, 2000, he still

has had his share of battles, the most recent of which was

    getting off hormone replacement therapy.

Jeremy is a testament that you can fall and fail and get

back up and do the right thing for yourself, for your family,

for your life. This guy is the complete opposite of lazy. Talk

about an inspiration! Maybe we could all learn something

from him. Find his story on pages 24-25.

Remember, its never too late to start living healthy and fit.

    Until next time,

    Its really great to see

    you guys are really doing

a good job! Would love to

    see more workouts for us

    guys in upcoming issues!

    Thanks!

    Ray SimonsVenice Beach, California

After Thanksgiving 2010, I packed on more than

10 pounds from being involved in a car accident,

not being able to work out due to injuries sustained

in the accident, a new sedentary job/lifestyle,

commuting and unhealthy eating habits. I needed

help! My weight was 2 pounds short of the heaviest

weight I had ever been in my entire life: my final

    pregnancy weight.

Unhappy with this change in my appearance

and health, I knew I needed some expertise, a

little push and guidance to help get me back on

track and stay there. I had heard from two of my

gym friends that they had great success on the

Max Muscle Individualized Meal Program, both

dropping more than 10 pounds of body fat and

putting on lean muscle. I knew that I, too, wanted to lose weight the right way: by losing fat, not muscle.

Through the individualized program I learned exactly the way I needed to eat to rev up my metabolism

and start burning fat. My menu was based off my age, height, weight, activity level and where I wanted to

be, making minor adjustments along the way when I hit plateaus. It was very exciting to come in for my

weekly appointments and see that all my hard work was paying off through my results! I have truly learnedhow to eat properly to fuel my body. The irony is I get to eat all day long, yet I still lose fat and gain muscle

(in addition to my exercise/cardio routine).

Also, they really took the time to explain things to me, why I was doing things a certain way or how to

improve things I was already doing so that I had a better understanding of the purpose behind doing it.

They also taught me how to do cardio properly. I was doing hours of cardio and not seeing the results I

really wanted before. Small changes made the biggest differences. During my 10-week program, I lost 11

pounds of fat mass, put on almost 3 pounds of lean mass, and ended up with 18.95 percent body fat (when

I started, I was at an unhealthy 26.12 percent)! Thank you Max Muscle Orangecrests Austin, Shannon,

Tharon and Larry!!! You are all awesome and I couldnt have done it without you!!!

    Jaimie Bond Riverside, California

    A TOTAL BODY CHANGE

    MOM BACKON TRACK!

In the late summer of 2009 I was sitting on my couch with my shirt off and my chest sagged down and touched my fat gut roll. I neverconsidered myself fat at 236 pounds, but from that moment on I was disgusted in what I had become. It was my awakening. I began a 2,000calorie a day diet, eliminated all the junk food and fast food. By earlyspring, I began weight lifting. I dropped from a 42-inch waist to a 32and had lost almost 100 pounds. But I was saggy and needed to put on some muscle, so I went to a big name supplement store at the mall. These people claimed to be knowledgeable. They sold me all kinds of different products. When I returned every two weeks to replenish, andhad very little results, they told me to take other products. I did this for 8 months. I was very disappointed.

Then one day I was driving in Moline, Illinois and saw a Max Muscle store. I stopped in thinking they had weight equipment. Instead I wasgreeted by Scott Herkes (the owner) who said he was a certified fitness nutrition coach. My first impression was, OK, another salesman.Instead he asked me what I was interested in and what products I had tried. He suggested things he thought would help me get results. Heeven explained what was in the products and understood how they worked. He suggested I try MaxPro protein for a couple of weeks to see ifa better protein would help. To my surprise, it did!

On my next visit to pick up MaxPro and Gourmet Gainer, Scott gave mea book called MaxForm Your Life. I have followed the book ever since. Withhelp from Scott and his wonderful family, I am doing a nutrition program aswell. My body is transforming unbelievably. Body fat is less than 7 percentand my weight lifting gains are off the charts.

Since my initial visit, I have added more supplements and I feel veryfit and muscular. I have even considered bodybuilding or possibly being apersonal trainer or nutrition coach. The Max Muscle folks are certified asfitness nutrition coaches and it shows. They go above and beyond andreally seem to care about their customers getting results. The products arewonderful. People ask me how Im doing it. I tell them its simple: nutrition, exercise and Max Muscle products. Thank you Max Muscle.

    SAFETY & NUTRITION:A PERFECT PARTNERSHIP

Congratulations to the City of Fairfax Fire Department, which lost a whopping 175

pounds during their winter Maintain, Dont Gain Challenge. The challenge, run

by Max Muscle Sports Nutrition of Fairfax, Virginia pitted fire department shifts

against each other in a quest to help avoid gaining the 5 to 10 pounds many

    Americans gain during the winter.

The results far exceeded City Fire Chief David Rohrs expectations. First, I want

to say a quick thank you to everyone who took part in this health and wellness

initiative. Every one of us reads each day about the health challenges we face

on the incident scene and as a lifelong profession. It is through education and

dedication to doing the right things we can manage our risks and make it acultural change across our department.

The department saw a 90 percent participation rate with 84 firefighters, medics,

40 & FABULOUSWhat does it mean to be the Max Muscle BrandManager? It means much more than knowinghow much protein is in a scoop of MaxPro. Itmeans embracing what Max Muscle stands for,

being the best you can be in your training andin your nutrition.

Since 1991, Max Muscles mission hasalways been to provide the best formulated sportsnutritional products on the market that when usedwith a healthy diet and workout plan, will createoptimal results. Recently, Max Muscle Corporateshared in the Max Muscle experience with ourveteran Brand Manager, Fred Varas. Severalmonths ago, Fred decided to dedicate himselfto competing in his first bodybuilding show notin his 20s, but in his early 40s, while working, raising his son and maintaining his myriad offriendships and relationships. However, most

importantly, he decided to do this while utilizingMax Muscles products.

Each day Fred would blend up his usual pre-workout drink of Full Blown Extreme, Glutamineand Max BCAA and finish with ARM LemonLime. He would train 2 to 3 hours a day afterspending hours walking around the office withhis gallon jug of water that we was required todrink through the entire process. Every day, hewould fight the urge to go back to his normal lifeand he would drag himself to the gym and trainthrough injury and sickness wondering if he wasgoing to be able to compete and place.

Regularly, Fred would explain the difficulty

preparing for the posing and sticking to his strictdiet that he did not truly understand at the start ofthe process but always turned to his work contactsfor their support, guidance and experience. Themeasured meals, the protein shakes and thetraining became a science for Fred over themonths he dedicated himself to achieving thegoal of looking the best he possibly could forone night.

On April 9th, Fred Varas competed in the2011 NPC Orange County Classic and placed2nd in the Masters and 4th in the Novice LightWeight Division, showing that any of us atany age with the proper guidance, desire and

nutritional products, can achieve our goals andcan surpass everyones expectations.

When out with friends, it seems perfectly

natural to commiserate about menstrualcramps or discuss our sex lives. But when

it comes to certain health conditions like

bad breath or gas we often suffer in silence. In fact, few

people discuss these things even with their doctors. But

as embarrassing as it is, coming clean about your health

issues can help you to get rid of them for once and for all.

    Heres how:

morning breath all day longJudging by the amount of breath products on the market

from mints and gum to toothpastes and mouthwashes

bad breath, or halitosis, is a common health problem. Of

course, after a garlicky meal or a nights sleep, we all have

bad breath. But how can you tell if you have a chronically

malodorous mouth? You really cannot smell your ownbreath, says Harold Katz, DDS, founder of the California

Breath Clinics. Your brain goes through a process called

acclimation, where you get used to your own smell.

According to Katz, the best test of bad breath is using a

halimeter, which is a portable machine that measures the

concentration of sulfur compounds in your breath. These

foul-smelling compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide (the

rotten egg smell) and other chemicals, are emitted by

anaerobic bacteria that live below the surface of the tongue

and in the throat. While we all have these bacteria, they

become more active (and emit more sulfur compounds)

under certain conditions, such as dry mouth, post nasal

drip, and use of certain medications.

what to do about thoseembarrassing health problems

once and for allBy Linda Hepler, BSN, RN

But you dont have to have a

halimeter to test your own breath. To

get some indication of breath odor,

says Katz, you should lick the back of

your hand, let it dry for a few seconds,

and then smell the same area after its

dried. For best results, adds Katz,

first wash your hands with an odorless

    soap.

what to doReduce dry mouth. Dry mouth canbe caused by smoking (both tobacco

    products and marijuana), alcohol

    consumption and medications like

    antihistamines, blood pressure pills

    and antidepressants. Avoid smoking

and alcohol if possible, drink plenty

of water and look for products that

    increase saliva production, such as

sugarless gum (one with xylitol is your

    best option).

Eliminate bacteria by brushing allareas of the mouth, including gums,

cheeks and tongue with sodium laurel

    sulfate free toothpaste (this chemical

is drying). Follow up with a non-alcohol

    oxygenating mouthwash, which is

    effective against sulfur-producing

    bacteria.

See a doctor if bad breath persists.Sometimes its a symptom of a more

serious problem, such as an infection,

    diabetes or lactose intolerance. And

    dont forget those twice-yearly dental

    visits!

whats newYou may want to consider a probiotic

oral care product for bad breath.

    These work by adding naturally

    occurring (harmless) bacteria to your

    mouth, which produce a protein

    that prevents the anaerobic sulfur-

    producing bacteria from growing on

the tongue and in the throat. Read

passing gas like ALL the timeWhether we like it or not, gas is a

    universal phenomena. Intestinal gas

is a function of the digestive process,

says Steven Lamm, MD, clinical faculty

member at the New York University

    School of Medicine and long-time

    medical consultant for The View.

In fact, people who eat very healthy

diets rich in fiber have more gas. Itsan indicator of healthy digestion.

Some foods, such as beans and

    lentils, broccoli and cabbage, dairy

    products containing lactose, and

fructose in some fruits contain sub-

stances that arent easily digested. So

they pass unchanged into the lower

    intestine, where bacteria there break

    them down into simpler substances

including gas. This is all part of the

    normal digestive process.

But for some people, gas is excessive

    and accompanied by bloating and

    cramping, which according to Lamm,

may be an indicator of maldigestion.

You may not be breaking foods down

    properly, he says.

This may be because the foods

youre eating are highly processed, or

because as you age, your pancreas

    makes fewer digestive enzymes. And

in some cases, excessive gas may

indicate a more serious problem, likelactose intolerance or irritable bowel

    syndrome.

what to doChange your diet. In general, saysLamm, the less processed foods in

your diet, the better. If you think milk

may be causing your problems, try

lactose reduced dairy products to see

if it makes a difference. Eliminate foods

that you suspect are causing a problem,

then add them back in small amounts

to see if you can tolerate them.Eat slowly, skip the gum, and de-crease carbonated beverages. Gulpingyour food, chewing gum and drinking

carbonated beverages all add air to

    your digestive system, increasing the

amount of gas you will experience.

Take supplements. Improve the eco-system of your digestive tract with

    probiotics and digestive enzymes,

    recommends Lamm. Probiotics will

    stabilize the bacterial environment in

the colon, while enzymes will aid in

    digestion.

Psst!Products with key natural ingredients such as those found inMaxNutraceutica ls Nuzyme can help you break down foods properly so youre

not left with bloating, cramping and embarrassing gas.

See a doctor, especially if your gas is accompanied bypain, unintentional weight loss, bloody stools or chronic

    diarrhea, advises Lamm.

whats newIf youre somewhere where you just cant afford to worry

about offending others such as at a meeting or a job

interview you might try a product created by Innovations,

sweating even when nobody else isSweating helps the body to stay cool. And its perfectly

natural to sweat when youre exercising, when its warm

out, or when you are anxious or embarrassed. But for some

people, excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can become

    a social nightmare.

How do you know if you have hyperhidrosis? If youre

sweating when no one else is, your palms are always

sweaty or youre ruining shirts with wetness, you may have

hyperhydrosis, says Amy Wechsler, MD, dermatologist,

psychiatrist, and author of The Mind-Beauty Connection:

9 Days to Reverse Stress Aging and Reveal More Youthful

    Beautiful Skin.

Hyperhidrosis is often a genetic condition, says Wechsler.

It typically starts in puberty, and affects different areas for

different people, such as the armpits, soles of the feet, or

palms. It often becomes worse when anxious or stressed.

    It can be really embarrassing.

what to doTry an extra-strength antiperspirant containing 10 to 15percent aluminum chloride, such as Certain Dri. Your doctorcan also prescribe a higher dosage of antiperspirant, such

as Drysol, but this can be irritating, especially on armpits,

says Wechsler. Antiperspirants should be used at nighttime

    as well.

Channel electricity. Iontophoresis, an FDA-approvedprocedure, uses electricity to help to turn off the sweat

glands of the hands and feet. The therapy, which takes

about 20 minutes and requires several sessions, is

performed by immersing the hands or feet in water, then

passing a low current of electricity through it.

Opt for Botox. Botox is very, very effective, saysWechsler. It turns down the volume on sweat glands and

    lasts for about six months.

whats newFor the first time in almost seven years, the FDA has ap-

proved a new treatment for excessive underarm sweating.

MiraDry is a treatment involving a handheld device that

delivers electromagnetic energy to the armpits to eliminate

the sweat glands. MiraDry requires two hour-long treat-

ments, and lasts for more than a year. Its expected to be

available through dermatology offices by the end of 2011.

Learn more about MiraDry and hyperhidrosis through the

    International Hyperhidrosis Society, www.sweathelp.org.

By Joe Wells, Max Muscle Founder

    and CEO

    Summer is fast approaching. That

means we will be heading to the

    beach, pool or simply wearing

less clothing to beat the heat. We cant

hide behind the long sleeved shirts

and sweaters that are so cozy and

concealing during the winter. Its time

    to show a little skin!

Most of us may feel a little intimidated

about that. We tend to worry about our

pale winter skin, bellies and cellulite.Only a precious few are comfortable in

    a swimsuit.

    Here are a few

    training tips to help

    you get beach-ready

    faster than you ever

    thought.

Get a little sun beforeyou head to the beach. We all know that a

    little color can help

you look a better. Trya sunblock/bronzer

    that works with the

    sun. This will help

    you make sure you

    dont get too much

    sun. As we are all

    aware, skin cancer

is a real risk, so dont

    overdo it.

Cardio training is the best way to losebody fat. I have always been a big

believer in double-split aerobic training. Its simple, but you must make a little

time to get it done. In the morning do

some type of aerobic or cardio style

training. A light 30-minute jog, walk,

bike ride or something that gets your

heart pumping in the morning before

your first meal. And in the evening

the same thing after your last meal. It

takes the discipline of getting up early

and then following it all up again in the

evening. But it works great and will

    jumpstart the slowest of metabolisms!

    Nutrition (MMSN) is

    proud to bring you BAX.

BAX is based on the now

    large volume of

    published scientific

    studies showing the

    proven benefits of

    beta-alanine inimproving intensity,

    power, speed, and

    endurance forms of

    exercise. BAX also helps

delay the onset of lactic acid build-up enabling you to

    train longer and become stronger!

training tipsTry doing higher reps in the weightroom. If you usually do 8-12 repson your weight training workout, try

doubling that and do 15-25 reps.

This will shock your muscles and also

    promote a leaner overall appearance.

Be sure to take your protein, glutamine

    and creatine to avoid overtraining.

Do any type of interval training to push

your body. I like running 50-yard windsprints and doing plyometric jumps. This forces your body to exert at a very

    intense level that can

    really burn calories

    fast.

Make sure you takedeep breaths whileworking out and fo-cus on getting as

    much oxygen into

    your body everytime

you exercise. Wheth-er you are lifting

    weights or running,

    breathing and oxy-

    gen help burn fat and

    create energy! Deep

    deliberate breaths

    really help!

Avoid a high sodiumdiet. Salts can cause

your body to retain fluid. If your body is

carrying 4 or 5 pounds of extra fluid, it

can look like youve gained weight.

There is really no substitute for a

consistent system of eating right and

training. So keep that in mind a couple

of months before you know you will be

    heading to the beach.

Stop worrying about how you are

going to look in your bikini or board

shorts and get to the gym! Before you

know it, youll be turning heads at the

    beach!MS&F

    cover story

Jeremy Jackson, 30, spent most of his

    impressionable childhood years surrounded by

women like Yasmine Bleeth, Gena Lee Nolin,

Brooke Burns and the ever popular Pamela

Anderson on the smash hit series Baywatch. Playing

Hobie, the son of David Hasselhoffs character, Jeremy

got to do the two things he loved most: acting and being

    at the beach.

Not a bad gig for a young kid from Newport Beach,

California, who lived to dance, sing and put on skits

in his bedroom for his mom and her friends, and who

had quite an impressive list of national commercials, print ads, stints in soap operas and a few movies under

his belt before landing Baywatch. But what toll did all

of it have on such a young mind? What impact does

making millions and having anything you want have on a

teenager and how does someone like that turn out in the

    end?

Weve heard several stories of child stars gone bad

and Jeremy is certainly no exception. He battled drug

use in his teen years and later in life he found a new

addiction: hormone replacement therapy (watch that

journey unfold on this seasons Celebrity Rehab on VH1

airing later this month). But in the end, fitness and a

healthy lifestyle changed and saved his life. Now heson a different path: one that focuses on whats on the

inside far more than whats on the outside. Now, hes

truly found a life worth living.

Today, Jeremy is excited about working out, eating

healthful foods, taking natural supplements, helping

others get clean and sober and accomplishing his long

list of goals. With such strong charisma and drive, he

cant help but impact those around him.

Ive encountered many people in my years in the

fitness industry, but I must say, Jeremy Jackson is

truly one of a kind, says close friend, fitness guru and

mentor, Clark Bartram, 47, of Escondido, California.

appetite for information is somethingthat has really motivated me to takemy game to the next level.

In life we all make mistakes, butto me the true measure of a personis what they do to recover and getback on track, Clark continued. AndJeremy has, and is, making marked

improvements daily on his physical, spiritual and emotional levels. Imhonored to have him as a friend.

Jeremy would be the first to tell youthat his life is an open book. If you havea question about him, ask him and hellgive you a straight answer. Its theonly way to be, he says. So, we askedhim some questions about his past, hishormone replacement therapy use toget the physique he thought he had tohave, his new goals and how hes nowliving a very rewarding sober, fit and

healthy lifestyle filled with friends andfamily and meaningful experiences. And yes, ladies, we even asked him ifhes single. Heres what Jeremy had tosay about it all:What are your goals today? Oh wow, thats a big one! Im full of goals andaspirations. Im constantly makingnotes and adding things to my to-dolist. Heres a sneak peek: Using my new physique, athleticskills and abilities in the TV and filmindustry.

Finding and getting married to thewoman of my dreams.Creating my perfect gym, then open-ing it to the public as a business.Having children.Owning my own restaurant specializ-ing in superfood snacks, caloric denseraw/wheat free/gluten free/dairy free/processed sugar free treats, snacks, bars, shakes and meals. After Celebrity Rehab airs, doing anALL NATURAL physique or fitness con-test. This will keep me accountable to

myself and give me something to trainhard for. Also, it will let all my friendsand supporters know I stayed true tomy word and kept it CLEAN.What is your advice to others who want tobe like you?FIND ME AND HANG OUTWITH ME! Whenever I want to be likesomebody or incorporate somethingnew into my life I find somebody whois an expert or knows more than meand I just stick to them like glue! What motivates you? Furthering myeducation both mentally and physically.

Also, educating others. I love to learn

and share what I have learned. Most ofall, though, competition motivates me!Why did you start on hormone replacementtherapy (HRT)?When I was about 28, Istarted working out and wasnt reallygetting the results I thought I shouldget. I was trying cross-fit, mixed martialarts, all kinds of things. I got it in my

head that maybe since Id done methwhen I was young, I had somehowmessed up my hormones. So, I went toan endocrinologist, the best in his field, and my test results came back withlow human growth hormone and lowtestosterone. So, I started spending$1,500 a month on prescriptions fromthe doctor, and then later started fillingmy own prescriptions for $500 fromshady sources in Asia. What made you want to go off HRT?I became emotionally unhealthy. It

wasnt killing me. I looked great. I wasgetting more work. I had my own place. My clothes were clean. I had friends. Iwas active. Emotionally and spiritually, though, I wasnt happy. It hurt my soulto be so engrossed in something sosuperficial. Then I got the call aboutdoing Celebrity Rehab and I figured, itwas now or never (to get off HRT).Are you worried about how youre goingto be portrayed on the show? Im notworried at all. I am an exciting personand I do have a story to tell. Anything

that a producer could manufacturewouldnt be as exciting as my realstory. What did you learn most from being onthe show?I learned a lot! So much, butthe education on the actual biologicalfunction and effects of the addictgene would be a biggest thing. I alsolearned that steroids use the sameneural pathways as stimulants, so it isvery common for former meth addictsto be drawn to steroids.Who are your role models and why? I

have three: Elvis Presley, because hewas a pioneer and an originator butalso knew how to seek knowledge andlearn from others. My mother, becauseshe had me when was 20 years oldand raised me by herself. No husband,no boyfriend, no support from mygrandparents. My mom gave andtaught me everything I know today andis such an example of an overcomer. And most important, JESUS! Love himor hate him, he does exist and his lifeis the ultimate example of living for and

    loving others.

    WORKOUT

Jeremy Jackson likes to mix it

up. From mixed martial arts to

    plyometrics to running sprints

and working out with weights, theres

never a dull moment when hes burning

calories and building lean muscle. Having

only trained for three years, he uses the

    knowledge hes gleaned from studying

kinesiology to create workouts that are

    fun, functional and ferocious. Here,

Jeremy gives MS&F readers a look into

one of his many diverse workouts and

tells us in his own words how he does

each exercise to get maximum results!

    TOTALLY

    BUSTEDJJS COMPOUND 30-MINUTESHOULDER- AND BICEP-BUSTING

    WORKOUT. Photos by Taylor Bartram

    SingLE-Arm incLinE prEAchEr cUrLS

I perform this exercise for hypertrophy (a.k.a. building size) of

the biceps because of its strict nature of isolation. By placing

the bench at about a 60-degree angle, the difficulty of the

exercise is during the first half of range of motion. I decelerate

the eccentric phase slowly for about 4 seconds with no rest atthe start or end of the movement.

    EZ-BAr DrAg cUrLS

This is my favorite bicep exercise because it creates the most

tension through the full range of motion. I keep my elbows

behind my torso and drag the bar up my abdominals while

keeping the bar against my body the entire way up. Full range of

motion ends at the middle of the chest. I ensure not to the flex

the humerus, which would make the elbows come forward to

create momentum and cheat the biceps. Placing my hands in a

close grip isolates the long head of the biceps and the wide grip

isolates the short head of the biceps brachii. Who would have

thought that the word biceps meant that there were two heads?

    Towel Chin-ups

Not only does this exercise strengthen

my arms and back, but it also strengthens

my grip. The grip is correlated with

core strength, which is how strong men

rip telephone books in half. This is a

functional exercise for any athlete, such

as football players during tackling and

fighters during takedowns. By using an

under-hand grip, my biceps become the

assisted or synergistic muscle for my lats.

With a neutral grip, the brachioradialis is

    the synergist.

    Dumbbell shoulDer press

By standing for this exercise, I strengthen

the core from integrating the lumbo-

pelvic hip complex. I start with my

humerus parallel to the floor and end

with a slight arc in the dumbbells to make

the letter A. The arc at the top keeps the

elbows slightly bent and creates constant

tension on the deltoid muscles. I always

make sure to keep my lower back straight

with a slight posterior tilt of the pelvis and

do not elevate the trapezius muscles at

    the top of the movement.

    olympiC bar power punCh

My workout programs are designed for

neuromuscular efficiency so that all of

    my muscles work interdependently. This

exercise works the delts and triceps.

However, the movement is so big and

powerful that it uses the entire body

interdependently. Place the far end of theOlympic bar in the corner of the wall and

floor for some stability. I stand with my

opposite foot forward of the punching

hand and grab the top of the bar. Create

the power starting with the lumbo-pelvic

hip complex and use the energy through

the feet all the way throughout the hands.

Explode with the punch on the concentric

phase and control the eccentric phase.

    eZ- bar uprighT row

My close friend and famous fitness

professional, Clark Bartram, told me heuses the upright row for size of the upper

trapezius muscles (after I asked him how

he gets his shoulders so dang developed,

of course). I use this exercise now and

since the upper traps and forearms are

used to hold the bar, it has also enhanced

    my heavy dead-lifts. I recommend a wider

grip as it eases tension on the wrists as

well as decreases medial rotation of the

shoulder, which can be dangerous to the

rotator cuff. So monitor your form and do

these carefully to get pumped shoulders.

If you read fitness magazines frequently, youre likely to

have read at least one article in the recent past geared

toward motivating and inspiring you. Well, how did

that article do? Did it make you jump up and hit the

gym? Change your eating habits maybe? Or did you simply

say, Hmmm, and move on to something else midway through

the article? Probably the latter. The reason these articles fail to

actually motivate readers is simple: they are written in a one-size-fits-all manner. And as we all know, we are not all one

    size.

A recent article in a well-known mens fitness magazine, for

example, began its list of tips with, Start the day off with a

Can-Do attitude. Really? Thats your advice, oh wise fitness-

magazine-guy? If it were as easy as putting a smile on your

face in the morning you probably wouldnt be reading this

article would you? Nope, instead the reader is left to fend for

himself. Now, some may read that statement and feel that it is

a solid piece of advice, but it is sure to leave many wondering,

What about those who just arent morning people? There are

a whole host tangible reasons why such vague and ambiguous

advice would fall on deaf ears, yet this is commonplace. Fear

not though, fellow magazine reader, this article will leave you

    ANOTHER MOTIVATION ARTICLE

armed with strategies that will help you squeeze

motivation in where little to none exists.

First order of business: you have to know

yourself and where your potential pitfalls lie. If you

are not a hardcore fitness fanatic then a plan built

for one wont work for you. As simple as it may

sound, to know where you will triumph, you need to

know where you may fall short. More importantly,

dont set yourself up for failure by asking more

of yourself than you can conceivably give. Babysteps. Knowing when you are most likely to

    stick to the plan is

    imperative so you can

    ride that motivation

    into and past your de-

    motivated times.

    For example, you

    probably already

    know when you are

    least likely to follow

    the plan (like after

    a long and stressful

day of work), so given that information, youcan formulate a strategy that calls for the most

demanding tasks during high motivation levels

and the least demanding tasks during times of

low-to-no motivation. If you are not likely to make

yourself five scrambled egg whites in the morning

before work, or you can but you find it extremely

tedious, find another way to get lean protein in

that is easier (like adding a scoop of long-lasting

protein to your oatmeal, yogurt or even cereal).

    Learn to make sustainable choices.

Simple fact of the matter is, if you have to force

yourself to do something, sooner or later, you will

not do it anymore. Stop trying to shove a square

peg in a round hole. For some, it is better to build

your plan around your life, not the other way

    around.

There are a few foundational questions that

need to be answered with soul-searching honesty

for this plan to work. Jot these questions down

on a piece of paper, answer them, and then build

your new plan around your answers.

If you need more help or just want to make

sure you are on track, check out the nearest

Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store and ask one

of the Certified Fitness Nutrition Coaches there

to help plan out your day for you given your

answers. If you do it this way, there will be no

more guesswork and you will also have someone

to hold you accountable when you need it most.

Got it? All right, lets get to it then!

Keep in mind that everyone has their own unique

set of questions that apply to them (remember

that one-size-fits-all thing?), but these are built to

get you on the right track, whatever your situation

    may be.

What is My fundaMental end goal?

This is where speaking to a Max Muscle CertifiedFitness Nutrition Coach is important. They

can assess you and give you realistic goals in

increments you can prepare for. Knowing what

you want your end result to be can help you

keep your eyes on the prize instead of arbitrarily

    moving forward.

What tiMe of the day are you Most

Motivated? Knowing this will help you

channel your efforts to take full advantage of that

motivation and ensure that you give yourself thebest chance to stick with your plan.

What tiMe of the day aM i the least

Motivated? Being aware of your least

motivated time of the day can let you know when

not to schedule a task or meal. That way you wont

skip something that is important to the success of

your plan because of poor timing.

aM i routine oriented or do i crave

choices? If you are not likely to be OK with

eating the same thing every day, then dont make

a nutrition plan that demands it. If variety is what

you need, then there are plenty of ways to build a

plan that will allow an array of options. Your Max

Muscle team member can give you a whole list

of interchangeable foods that are in accordance

    with your goals.

do i like to cook? Not everyone is a chef. So,

dont pack your nutrition plan with prep-heavy

foods if you dont like to cook. Instead, focus on

supplementation. At Max Muscle Sports Nutrition,

it is not all about fueling the athletes of the world

(though the name admittedly suggests it does).

You will find tons of food-based supplements

made specifically for giving you a healthy, easy

and cost-effective alternative to slaving over the

stove and whats even better, you can taste any

product you like before you buy it.

Now that youve got some solid fundamentals

on real, you-oriented plan building, it is time to

make it happen. Here is your official Call-To-

Action. Hop online, go to www.maxmuscle.com,

find a store near you, and go talk to a pro. Of all

the things you find worth spending time on in your

day, dont you think it is time to put your health on

the top of that list (or anywhere for that matter)?

You will be thankful you did. And hey, you may just

find yourself waking up with a Can-Do attitudeafter all.MS&F

    Champion 2010

    INSIDE EVERYONE

THERE IS Achampion!Iremember that around this timelast year I was preparing myselffor the MaxFormation championannouncement. I had made itto the top 20 and then the top 10,

but the online voting became more

    nerve-racking as each week passed.

Every day I had to tell myself over

and over that I was a champion no

matter what the outcome of the

MaxFormation or figure competitionI was about to embark on. I was a

    champion no matter what because

I gave my all. I was a champion

    because I believed

    in myself. I was a

    champion because I

    never gave up.

    There is a quote

    that I used to recite

    to myself as I was

    preparing for both

    the MaxFormation

    and my very first

    figure competition.

    Lao Tzu once said,

By letting it go, it all

    gets done. The world

    is won by those who

    let it go. But when

    you try and try. The

    world is beyond the

    winning.

    At first this quote

may seem the exact opposite of

what any kind of competitor should

live by. However, if you think about

it enough, it makes perfect sense.

A true competitor competes out of

his or her passion in the sport itself.

A true competitor competes for a

reason that goes much deeper than

    the desir
