Quality Tax Preparation

PREPARE FOR NEXT YEAR’S TAX SEASON! COME SEE US!

Sheriff Lonnie Greco announces that two Port Sulphur men were arrested yesterday (April 9) in connection with the April 6 burglary of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Port Sulphur. Anthony K. Roberts, 52, of 109 South Street and Michael G. Gaines Sr., 60, of 137 Gaines Lane have been booked with burglary of a religious building. Most disturbing is that Roberts was convicted in 2012 for burglarizing the same church. The investigation revealed that on April 6, Roberts and Gaines planned the burglary. At approximately 5:00 p.m., Gaines drove Roberts to the vicinity of the church, which is located at 28668 Highway 23 in Port Sulphur. Gaines dropped Roberts off at a local business and he walked nearly ¼ mile to the crime scene, while Gaines waited for him in the get-away vehicle.Next, Roberts entered the church rectory’s office through an unlocked door and stole a gallon glass jar filled with approximately $300 in U.S. coins. As Roberts fled from the location in a hurry, the door slammed shut, which alerted the priest that someone had entered the rectory. Roberts, whose identity was unknown at the time, was observed walking across an empty field in the direction of the get-away vehicle. It was later discovered that the jar had been stolen.Roberts returned to the get-away vehicle with the stolen property and the two made good their escape. Within a 2-day period, Roberts and Gaines spent the stolen money on illegal drugs and alcohol. The two men were developed as suspects after detectives discovered the duo had visited several Port Sulphur businesses and converted the coins into cash, as well as purchased alcohol and goods.During an interview with Detective Kelli Sylve and Sergeant Sidney Smith on April 9, Roberts confessed that he committed the burglary and that he and Gaines had spent $290 of the stolen money. Roberts admitted that Gaines was his accomplice and he had agreed to aid

him in committing the burglary by serving as the get-away driver. He also admitted that Gaines assisted him with spending the stolen money on illegal drugs and alcohol.Gaines was located but refused to cooperate with investigators. Both men were arrested and booked with

burglary of a religious building and remain in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office at the Detention Center without bond pending a Magistrate hearing today. On September 21, 2011, Roberts was arrested for burglarizing St. Patrick’s Church. In that incident, he broke a rear window and stole $5 in cash. DNA evidence linked Roberts to the crime. He was convicted on March 23, 2012 of burglary of a religious building and sentenced to five years at hard labor in the Louisiana Department of Corrections, which was suspended and placed on five years of probation. He completed a Drug Court program on August 14, 2014 and his probation was terminated early.Roberts’ criminal history includes convictions in Plaquemines Parish for burglaries in 1998, 2000 and 2011, and a 2007 schedule II drug conviction. On November 11, 2013, Gaines was charged with felony theft and he has a court date set for April 14. Gaines’ criminal history includes a 1978 Federal mail conviction and a 2001 Plaquemines Parish cocaine possession conviction.

Words to GROW by!RE-POTTING PLANTS

Now is an excellent time to give your shut-in house plants a chance to spread their roots by re-potting them. Re-potting gives confined root systems a chance to expand and also provides new and loose soil for such growth. The frequency of re-potting largely depends on the growth rate of the plant. Active plants may need larger pots each year, while their slower-growing cousins may have to be re-set only every two to three years. I recommend going up one pot size at a time when re-potting.First, water the plant thoroughly several hours before re-potting, then turn the pot and plant upside down and tap the pot gently to loosen it from the old container. Never yank a plant and its soil ball out by the stem.If the roots of the plant are heavily matted or woven together, loosen the ball to remove about 1/2 of the old outer soil. This encourages new roots to grow away from the tight circular pattern once the plant is re-potted.Place the plant in the new pot, holding it at the depth at which it originally grew. Add potting mixture around the plant, while gently tamping the soil to eliminate air pockets. Leave at least one-half inch of space at the top of the pot for watering. After re-potting, water thoroughly and do not wet it again until the surface has become slightly dry.Soil for house plants must be drained well, so the physical makeup of the potting medium is very important. If ordinary garden soil is used, it packs excessively after several watering’s.A desirable potting mixture is one which contains adequate organic matter and coarse soil particles to ensure drainage and air for good root formation and growth. Most house plants will grow in a soil prepared of five parts (by volume) of good garden loam soil, four parts peat most or leaf mold and one part sharp builders’ sand.

POISON IVYPoison ivy vines are starting to leaf out again and are going into their most troublesome stage. The irritating substance in poison ivy is the oily sap in the leaves, flowers, fruit, stem, bark and roots. The plant is poisonous even after long drying but is particularly irritating in the spring and early summer when it is full of sap. Dead vines remain potent for many months. Most cases of ivy poisoning are caused by direct contact with the plant, but some are caused by handling clothing, garden equipment and pets which have been contaminated with the oily sap. People differ greatly in sensitivity to the weed.If you realize that you have accidentally handled poison ivy or brushed against it, wash your skin as soon as possible. Yellow laundry soap is best. Lather several times and rinse in running water after each sudsing. This should remove or reduce the effect of the irritating substance which hasn’t already penetrated the skin. The first symptom noticed after contact with the plant is a burning and itchingsensation. This is followed by rash and swelling, then blisters. The symptoms usually develop within 12 to 48 hours after contact, but this may vary, depending on each person’s degree of sensitivity. Many people don’t know how to avoid this harmless-looking plant, largely because they do not recognize it. Poison ivy may be found as a climbing vine and as an upright or trailing shrub. Coming in many forms and colors, it has the constant characteristic of leaf clusters that always come in three’s.It may be found clinging to stone and brick houses and climbing trees and poles. It also grows abundantly along fences, paths and roadways and often is partially hidden by other foliage. The leaves vary in length from one to four inches. They are green and glossy in the summer and red or russet in the spring and fall. The fruit is white and waxy and resembles mistletoe.Glyphosate, known by various trade names, including “Roundup”, is effective against poison ivy. It will kill whatever green leaves it touches, but leaves no soil residues. Now is the time to cut climbing vines 2-3 feet above the ground, and then wait until the leaves flush out and spray with the appropriate chemical. When cutting the vines be careful to avoid contact with splattering sap. With most chemicals, more than one application will probably be necessary. First, though, wait for substantial regrowth of leaves before spraying, since the chemicals are absorbed through the leaves. For further information contact Alan Vaughn, County Agent, Plaquemines/St. Bernard Parish at (504) 433-3664 or (504) 278-4234. VISITING A SOUTHERN JEWEL by Tony Onellion

Last week I was able to take a trip to Savannah, Georgia for a free publication conference. It’s a city that understands the blend of history, culture, food and entertainment with the modern concerns of safety and sanitation better than just about anywhere in the U.S.

If you go to Savannah, you’re exposed to one of the three most historic cities in the South and one of the top five port cities in the country.

But you’re not exposed to decay, danger or olfactory assault. Simply put, Savannah is a Disneyland for middle America. It combines the sophisticated charm of Charleston and New Orleans without the sense of watching your back or taking along an economy size container of sanitary wipes. You can walk the streets of Savannah at midnight and see virtually nothing of the perceived menaces present in other Southern cities. Few policemen are watching fewer shady characters. This, in a community where Irish pubs rank fourth in the country (behind New York, Chicago and Boston) and first in per capita Irish pubs, offering visitors one of the four best St. Patrick Day celebrations in the United States. It’s a town of ghosts and ghost stories and recently a city of really good regular Joe and sophisticated eateries. San Franciscans, Des Moineans and Texans can all have fun here as well as the snowbirds from the Northeast on their way to Florida. Because in Savannah, you are also at ground zero for the finest golf in NorthAmerica…most great courses are between them and Charleston but Augusta is closer to Savannah. And the food is mostly what New Orleans offers to the average non-Nawlins visitor…only less expensive. No, it’s not New Orleans cooking…but it’s really good.

Savannah’s old section is actually more fun to traverse than the French Quarter. There’s more of it open to the public in the sense that you don’t hesitate to walk into an establishment as you might in New Orleans. As mentioned, it doesn’t stink, it doesn’t have street hustlers or visible homeless. But it has old European character and a sense of adventure. It is a romantic place to visit. Yes, the decadence and sense of sinful Vegas are not present in Savannah but that metric should be out of most people’s bucket list by the time they’re in their ‘60s. The city is loaded with young professionals…..Millennials who know where they are going. New Orleans, for all its charm and sophistication, cannot keep enough top-flight young folks to make the city what it needs to be. Those of our best and brightest have traditionally fled to both coasts and recently, to Atlanta, Texas and North Carolina, for opportunity. Now they have another destination in Savannah with lots of educational and professional opportunities and a gateway location to some of the most beautiful land in the South and the U.S. And Savannah gives them a sense of history and gravitas.

New Orleans could learn a great deal from Savannah, if corruption and greed weren’t standing in its way. What makes New Orleans tourism great is its people - the thousands of generally underpaid workers of fourth, fifth and sixth generation New Orleans families - who truly believe

in the great spirit and mojo of the Big Easy. But little is truly easy in New Orleans as too many young entrepreneurs give up because of the set way of doing things there. And all the waiters, cooks and musicians cannot make up for the lack of vision the city possesses. Maybe some of the leaders in New Orleans will take a trip to Savannah soon…not to have a whizzing contest with that community but to actually see what good they are doing with many of the same traits New Orleans shares.

Savannah. New Orleans Lite. And bright. And safe. And fun. And opportunistic. No floods, no hurricanes.

TAKE A KID FISHING!!!

FISHING REPORTS 4.16.15Proud father Danny gave his son an offshore trip for graduation. He booked it through Venice Offshore. His son got a football scholarship to the Air Force academy. He plays either guard or center. The problem was the seas were rough. I had been very sick the day before and wanted to cancel but they were here and I sucked it up, got out of bed and went for it. I had no intention of running far. My Glacier Bay handled the seas well but it was a slow crawl out to the targeted rig. I knew we had blackfin and amberjack at the rig. When we pulled up another boat was there and the tuna bite was slow. I marked fish all over the place. I decided to drop an Anteater jig down near the rig. Dropped down, 2 or 3 jigs, and hooked up. Backed the boat away from the rig and the fight was on.

This was easy!A nice 50 pound class amberjack was a great way to start. You know after a start as easy as that the rest of the day is going to be super easy or a tough game all day. I spent the next half hour or so donating jigs to the rig. These fish were bigger than usual and holding tight to the rig. I gave up donating jigs to the Amberjack Lip Piercing program. My quest for tuna was not going well. We now had 4 boats around us chunking for tuna. The fish were there but not feeding as we would have liked. They may have been line shy or something else. Occasionally somebody would hook up to a blackfin tuna but I was not having luck setting up a comfortable drift.

I made a move close by and decided to drop down near the rig to see if I could find our limit amberjack. Almost a repeat of our first stop of the day. As I was backing from the rig I took a wave over the back or the boat. We all got soaked. It even soaked me at the console and filled the boat with water. Self bailing scuppers worked well but most of our bait on the cutting board went overboard. We all got soaked. Did I mention it was rough?

Fish put a “whuppin” on this big boy!

GENERALLY SPEAKINGToo much rain in recent days has put a damper on fishing the parish except for Lloyd Landry, Hoop, Dan Skermetta and Louis Rossignol, who don’t seem to care what the weather does. The trout are in and they can be found if you can take the spring showers. Reds will never go away. Wish there was more news, but the guys don’t seem to be hitting it as hard this spring as in the past. LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. April showers bring May flowers. Well, we all know we’ve had enough showers lately. Good news is it hasn’t affected the fishing in Southern Plaquemines parish at all. On the west side of the river, head out of Joshua’s and fish along the islands and reefs in Bay Jaques and English Bay. Live shrimp or Gulp! under a cork will help you catch some beautiful trout right now. Find points with moving water and bait and you will find the trout. You can also head west over toward Four Bayous Pass ‘cause there have been some good reports from that area. On the east side, head out of Buras Marina launch and head towards Quarantine Bay, California Bay and Bay August for easy limits of reds. Shrimp and artificials under a cork will do the trick. Trout are showing up at the Iron Banks and Stone Island. Watch the fog this time of the year ‘cause it can sneak up on you. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS. 504-912-8291.CAPT. LOUIS ROSSIGNOL The redfish down in Venice have been on fire. We fished Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and had limits everyday. One area we’ve been fishing, has produced redfish in triple digits all weekend. My customers literally get tired from just reeling in one redfish after another. Sunday evening we tagged 50 redfish and that was all the tags we had. The trout are starting to show up too, with some nice 3 to 3 and a half pounders coming in on Saturday morning before the wind picked up. CAPT. LOUIS ROSSIGNOL, VENICE GUIDE SERVICE, 504-481-7529

MGM MARINA - RAINED OUT THIS WEEK. 504 656-2267 - MGM 504 656-2267.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - Captain DAN SKERMETTA. Well, I know there’s just some days when a man shouldn’t go fishing and maybe today was one of those days. HOWEVER, the incoming weather didn’t stop us from going and it didn’t stop the fish from biting. I had Rocky Smith and his son, Dalton, from Houston. We headed down the river in a bit of fog Tuesday morning. The wind was out of the south at 10 to 15 miles per hour and lots of clouds overhead. Water was clean and moving and full of bait. Our trout bite started immediately but 45 minutes later it ended just as quickly, so we made a short move and picked up a limit of reds to go along with our 21 trout that weighed in between 2 and a half and 4 pounds. All in all, not a bad morning of fishing and no rain on us until we got back to the mouth of Venice Marina. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

Another good fish and we have our limit of Amberjacks.

There were blackfin here but one of my buddies at the rig I just left called and said the bite may be picking up there. I went back and once again set up a chunking drift. After over an hour of this I was thinking about doing something else. Suddenly one of the lines starts screaming and the normal reaction from somebody that has never done this before is start reeling. Forgot one thing. Engage the reel. OOPS! Situation under control and the fight is on. We soon have a nice blackfin in the boat.

This bought us more time here but the lock jaw was not loosening up at all. Several drifts later the sharks moved in and shut everything down. I made an attempt to move to another rig but the side seas were splashing water into the boat so I changed direction and rode with a comfortable sea. We finished our last hour in shallow water catching and releasing red snapper almost on every drop.

We were attempting to get through to some white trout and lane or mangrove snapper or even some croaker but the red snapper were very thick. Once out of bait we went in. We did manage one nice 3 pound white trout though.

Only had 3 fish and the white trout in the box at the end of the day but the customers were happy at how the day went under the conditions we had.

This would allow the cat or dog time out of the shelter to be socialized and hopefully find a home. We would ask that while the cat or dog is in your care that you try to get him/her adopted. If someone is interested in adopting, you would refer them to the shelter to fill out an application. We would supply you with the necessary supplies that you would need to care for the cat or dog. Nine Subjects Cited for Oyster Violations in Terrebonne Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division agents cited nine subjects in Terrebonne Parish for alleged oyster violations on April 8. Agents patrolling in Hell Hole Bayou spotted several vessels and crewmembers harvesting oysters in an unapproved area.Agents made contact with the occupants and cited Jolio C. Garcia, 30, Omar Ever Aviles Gomez, 28, Daniel M. Sanchez, 21, Francisco Arnulfo Ruiz Maradiaga, 34, all from Houma; Hermilo G. Luria, 25, Mario G. Lara, 37, Carlos T. Gonzaga, 30, Francisco A. Tenoria, 30, all from Gray; and Eduardo L. Alejo, 27, from Theriot, for harvesting oysters from an unapproved polluted area and unlawfully taking oysters off a private lease without written permission. The agents seized the dredges and returned 115 sacks of oysters to the water. Agents also seized the vessels on a department seizure order.Taking oysters from an unapproved polluted area brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Taking oysters from a private lease without permission carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. The men could also have their oyster harvester licenses revoked by the department for up to one year. The violators could also be sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service and only be allowed to harvest oysters from a vessel with a vessel monitoring device for up to one year. The agents participating in the case are Sgt. Bryan Marie and agent Richard Bean.

IT’S POOL START-UP TIME!Hope you all had a very enjoyable Easter. Not only did we celebrate Easter but, this year our grandson’s birthday fell on Easter Sunday. We had a wonderful day with family and friends. Love it when we get to visit with family we haven’t seen in a long time. It was such a beautiful day! Our grandson, Dion, is now 16 years old! I can hardly believe how fast time has flown by! Before you know he will be leaving for college! I am so not ready for that! We had all four grandchildren together for Dion’s birthday. Our oldest grandson, Logan, is leaving in June for basic training. He has decided to join the Marines after 1 year of college. I have very mixed emotions about that. But, we all have to make our own decisions in life. I pray for the best for all my grandchildren. Our oldest granddaughter, Kristina, will be graduating from college this December. So glad our Carlea’ is only 9. We have a few more years before she ventures on her own way. Yep, we are getting old.

Well, on to this issue’s craft. Dion asked that I make a couple of things to donate for a school fundraiser. And he even had his own ideas on what he wanted me to make. Of course, I couldn’t say no. He told me he wanted 4 different wreaths, a round Easter wreath and a cross, also a round red, white, and blue wreath and a green and white Shaw wreath. I managed to get 3 ready for him in time for one event. I plan on having the fourth one ready for the next upcoming event.

But, let me tell you a little about the one pictured today. Of course I used all Deco supplies for these wreaths. I find they make a better quality mesh. It lasts so much longer than the mesh you buy at local retail stores. The colors don’t fade as fast. I used a Royal Blue 20”X10” roll of mesh for the main color background than added red and white #40 mesh ribbon. I accented that with red glittered balls and curly sprigs. This is a very simple Fourth of July wreath. You can make this as Patriotic as you would like by adding small American flags (which I could not find at the local craft stores). I had thought about painting a wooden firecracker to put in the center but didn’t have the Baltic birch

wood to cut one out. That would be too cute also. Your imagination is the only limitation you have in designing your wreath. Design your own wreath. I promise, these are so easy and fun to make. And if you need help, just email or call me. I would be glad to help in any way I can.

Well, that’s our craft for this time. So what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun.

Meet Emma Lou! She is a 1 and a half year old Black-Mouth Curr. Emma Lou had a tough life before coming to PAWS, she was found by Animal Control as a very skinny and very pregnant stray. When she first came to us she only let 2 employees get anywhere near her, and she quickly came out of that shell! 1 week after coming to us, we helped her deliver 8 healthy puppies! She was the best Mamma to those babies and 7 weeks later they have all been adopted in to fantastic homes. It is now Emma Lou’s time to find her forever home that she so deserves.

Hi I am Drizzle. I would do best in an active family. I’m a 3 year old boy who just tested NEGATIVE for heartworms and I couldn’t be more happy to finally be able to run around in the yard with the other dogs! I love to play with toys! I do need some leash training, I love to run, even when you want to walk. But if you have some time for me, I promise I’m willing to learn! Please pick me to be your forever friend, I promise I’ll do my best to please you! Come by P.A.W.S and meet me today, I’ll have lots of kisses waiting for you!

Meet Fez! He is a 5 month old Terrier Mix. Fez enjoys going on walks and playing fetch. He is great with other dogs, cats, and children. Fez has been neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on his shots. Come meet Fez TODAY at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

She is learning how to play with other dogs and she is still scared of cats. Unfortunately Emma tested positive for heart-worms, so she is only available to be fostered to adopt until her treatment is over. She has been spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on her medical. If you think you can give Emma the amazing life that she so deserves please come meet her today at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Hi! My name is Sushi. I am a 4 year old male who has been at PAWS for 4 years. I was adopted a couple of times but returned because a family member was allergic. I am a sweet, lovable guy who loves having my ears rubbed. I think I am quite handsome if I don’t say so myself. I enjoy being with people and being loved on. I would love to cuddle with you on the sofa while you read a book. I am SO ready for my forever home!! I am up-to-date on shots, neutered, and micro-chipped. Can you give me a forever home?

My name says it all…Can you scratch my belly? I am a 3 year old girl looking for that special someone who will scratch my belly and spend time loving on me. And don’t worry, I have plenty of love to give too. I have been at PAWS since May 2012. I am ready for my forever home.

I would love to sit in your window and watch the world go by. Sitting on your lap for naptime would be awesome! If you have toys I can chase, I’m ready to play. I am up-to-date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped. Come by PAWS Tuesday-Saturday (11:00-5:00)to see me. Can you give me a forever home?

Will you please be our

guardians?

In its second year, this program provides a unique opportunity for families to learn fishing basics and participate in activities to increase fishing knowledge and skill. The first 50 registrants for each event will receive a complimentary rod and reel, and the first 100 registrants will receive a fishing goodie bag. Competitive categories are available for nearly all legal fish species, and every participant is automatically entered into a raffle for outdoors prizes courtesy of event sponsors. Entry for each event is $10 per participant (except for the September 26 event), and includes a t-shirt and lunch. Participants must provide their own fishing equipment and bait. Events will begin shortly after sunrise and will conclude by noon. The competition portion of each event will include divisions for all ages and fishing categories for multiple species, with a boat division at locations that have launch access. L.W.F.C. Acknowledged for 50 Years of Support for Waterfowl Habitat Conservation!

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) received a commemorative plaque at their April 2 meeting honoring 50 years of support for waterfowl breeding ground habitat conservation. The recognition came from Ducks Unlimited at the North American Wildlife and Natural Resource Conference for financial support provided through the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies’ State Contributions to Canada Program. Louisiana, along with Ohio and South Carolina received this distinction for participating in the program since 1965.The Commission directs statutorily-dedicated state funds through the program to enhance and protect breeding waterfowl habitat in Canada, where many of Louisiana’s migrating and wintering ducks are produced. Previous recognition for this support was received in 2013 when contributions reached over $10 million toward this effort since inception. Louisiana is one of only three states that have provided funding at this level. California and Illinois are the others. The money directed by the Commission is matched by Ducks Unlimited and matched again by North American Wetland Conservation Act funding before it goes toward land purchase, conservation easements, wetland and grassland habitat restoration, and habitat management in the Canadian prairies to benefit nesting ducks. Unusually wet conditions along with this significant habitat investment have produced some of the highest duck populations on record.
