mutation. Depuis la déréglementation en l986, notre industrie œuvre à redéfinir sont rôle dans le processus de réinstallation. En dépit des incerti-tudes de l’économie mondiale, nous poursuivons notre trajectoire. Certaines compagnies de fourgons et de déménagement se sont diversifiées sur de nouveaux marché au cours des années, tandis que d’autres se sont contractées et spécialisées dans leur principale sphère d’activités. Il n’y a pas de simple solution pour restructurer notre industrie. Le changement et rien que le changement est notre

constante. Pour cette raison, L’ACD revêt une importance comme jamais auparavant auprès des membres.

Votre association, par l’entremise de son conseil d’administra-tion et de ses comités, s’applique diligemment à composer avec les nombreux besoins de notre industrie. Cette année, nous avons mis sur pied plusieurs nouveaux comités. Ces derniers s’occupent de cours, de l’adhésion, de procédures pour les membres inter-nationaux, de questions gouvernementales et relations-clients ainsi que de la mise en valeur de nos conférences. Nous nous employons à régler les problèmes de personnel et de protection des consommateurs soulevés par les autorités provinciales. Nous avons adopté une position proactive pour plaidoyer contre les déménageurs crapuleux et nous aidons le consommateur à évaluer les services de qualité. Nous sommes à préparer du nouveau ma-tériel de formation. Les membres peuvent se prévaloir à un coût minimal des vidéos indispensables pour former de nouveaux et même d’anciens déménageurs.

A S YOUR NEW association chairman, I welcome you to our ever changing and always challenging marketplace. Since

deregulation in 1986, our industry has been work-ing at redefining its role in the relocation process. Today, we continue this journey but do this saddled with continued global economic uncertainties. Van lines and movers have diversified over the years entering new marketplaces while others have contracted and specialized in their core businesses. There is no one simple answer to the restructuring that our industry finds itself experiencing. Change and change alone is our only constant. For that reason, CAM is more essential to its members than at any other time in its history.

Your association, through its board of directors and its com-mittees, has been working diligently at addressing many of our industry’s needs. New this year, we have implemented a set of working committees. These committees are responsible for mem-ber education, international moving, membership issues, govern-ment and consumer affairs and the organization and enhancement of our annual conference. We are addressing labour concerns and consumer protection issues that have been raised by provincial authorities. We have taken a proactive position on addressing the problem of rogue movers and are very active in helping the consumer to evaluate quality services. We are in the process of producing another training video which will be relevant to our industry and will complement our present collection of training material. These videos are available to all members at a nominal fee and should be considered essential for training new and old movers alike.

In closing, I would like to thank our past chairman, Rick Taylor, for his work and leadership over the past years and assure everyone that we will continue to address the concerns and interests of this industry in a responsible and proactive manner.

NOUS RECEVONS FINALEMENT des signaux annonçant la fin de la Grande Récession. À mesure que la situation

économique s’améliore, les déménageurs sont témoins de mises en chantier et de hausses dans l’achat de propriétés d’où, un plus grand nombre de déménagements locaux et longues distances.

Cette période s’est traduite par des résultats plutôt surprenants pour l’Association canadienne des déménageurs.

L’adhésion n’a jamais été aussi élevée en 14 ans, ce qui indique que l’industrie appui l’associa-tion. Ce soutien permet à l’association de mieux remplir son rôle à aider les membres à se distinguer

des non-membres aux yeux du consommateur, du gouvernement et autres intéressés.

Nos nouveaux comités rehaussent l’efficacité de l’ACD en augmentant la participation des directeurs et des membres dans la planification et la mise en place d’activités. Le Comité de l’éducation progresse dans la préparation d’une nouvelle vidéo de formation sur l’emballage et le déballage. Le Comité du déména-gement international a préparé un code éthique et des procédures d’utilisation normalisées pour les déménageurs internationaux du Canada. Le Comité des conférences prépare la conférence annuelle qui aura lieu du 14 au 16 novembre 2010. Le Comité des affaires gouvernementales et relations avec les consommateurs progresse dans ses démarches auprès du gouvernement pour dissiper les inquiétudes des consommateurs et adopter une réglementation appropriée. En dernier lieu, le Comité de l’adhésion travaille à démontrer à l’industrie la valeur d’appartenir à l’ACD.

Dans son rôle de défenseur d’intérêts particuliers, le bureau national collabore avec les gouvernements provinciaux sur les enjeux de notre industrie, répond aux demandes des médias et combat la publicité nuisible. Nous avons passé des annonces au nom des membres pour des emplois temporaires et permanents et avons reçu plus de 1 000 curriculum vitæ de candidats, partout au Canada.

W E ARE NOW SEEING the final ef-fects of what has been termed the Great Recession. As the economy

improves, movers are seeing housing starts and home sales improving and with this improvement, an increase in local and long distance moves.

The period has yielded some surprising results for the Canadian Association of Movers.

CAM’s membership is at its highest level in 14 years indicating industry support for the association. This level of support better enables the association to perform its role – that is to assist members to differentiate themselves from the remainder of the industry in the eyes of the consumer, government and all other stakeholders.

Our new committee system has increased CAM’s effectiveness by increasing the input and the participation of both directors and members in the planning and operation of the association’s activi-ties. The education committee is making progress in producing the next training video on packing and unpacking. The international committee has produced a code of ethics and standard operating procedures for international movers in Canada. The conference committee is moving ahead with planning the 2010 annual confer-ence scheduled for November 14 to 16, 2010. The government and consumer relations committee has made progress in commu-nicating with government on consumer concerns and appropriate regulation. And lastly, the membership committee is working to show the moving industry the value of CAM membership.

In its continuing advocacy role, the national office has been working with provincial governments on moving issues, respond-ing to requests from the media for information and refuting defamatory remarks in advertising. We have also been advertising on members’ behalf for temporary and permanent employees and now have over 1,000 résumés from applicants across Canada.

W ITH THE BUSY summer moving season not too far away, it’s time to start think-

ing about how you’re going to find workers to meet your summer staffing needs. And you don’t want just any-body; you want the best people you can find, people who may even turn into dedicated, long-term employees.

So, how can you get good people – reliable employees who get the job done, treat your customers well, and cause you

a minimum of grief?For starters, a little planning goes a

long way. Start thinking about your needs right now. Don’t wait until the last minute to start looking. Otherwise, you’re likely to hire the first person that comes along – which could be disastrous!

Secondly, know exactly what you’re looking for. If you don’t already have one, create a formal job description, outlining the responsibilities, tasks and performance expectations of the position. As well, develop what I call an “Ideal Candidate Profile,” outlining the skills, personality characteristics and work habits of the “perfect” person for the job.

Once you know what you’re looking for, begin your search. Don’t wait. Start searching right away. If you typically hire students for the summer, keep in mind that they’re already thinking about sum-mer jobs.

Another key to an effective search is volume. You want to attract as many potential candidates as possible to give you more to choose from. It’s the “law of aver-ages”: the more applicants you receive, the greater chance you have of finding some gems. Granted, it will take more time to do your screening, but that’s why you’re starting now!

How do you attract applicants? Internet job-search sites are the number-one choice for today’s techno-savvy students. Newspaper ads are expensive and largely ineffective, especially when trying to attract students. Job banks and student job fairs are also possibilities. Online classified-ad sites like Kijiji are becoming an increasingly popular method of adver-tising jobs, and most of them are free! Social-media sites, such as LinkedIn or even Facebook, can also be used to spread the word. You can ask for referrals from

existing employees, although you should be careful when using this method…your employee may be biased. And don’t forget the old-fashioned “Help Wanted” sign in your window.

Screening your applications is the next step. I use a simple three-colour coding system: green, yellow and red. Green means “Good possibility. Might be worth interviewing.” Yellow means “So-so. Will consider if the greens don’t pan out.” Red means “Forget it! Not a chance.”

When screening candidates, match résu-més or applications to the job description. If the job calls for good writing skills and neat penmanship, check how well-written and neat the applications are. If the job requires heavy lifting and physical work, look for evidence of experience in this type of work. If customer service is important, seek out candidates who’ve had part-time jobs at McDonald’s or a retail store.

As well, try to get some sense of work ethic and past work performance. Is infor-mation about grades or achievements in school included? Is there a history of part-time jobs, paper routes? Any reference to accomplishments, whether related to work, school, sports or community activities?

Once you’ve completed your initial screening and have chosen your “greens,” you’re ready to start interviewing. I could write a book on the interview process, but I’ll try to give you the most important highlights here.

I like to start by telephone interviewing my top eight to ten greens (depending on how many positions I’m filling). Yes, this takes more time initially than you might want to spend, but can save you interview time in the long run by screening out unsuitable candidates. moyens de trouver des travailleurs pour combler vos besoins en personnel. Vous ne dé-sirez pas n’importe qui; vous entendez trouver les meilleurs éléments, ceux qui deviendront des employés stables et dévoués.

Comment trouver les bonnes person-nes ? Comment dénicher des employés qui accompliront leur travail, traiteront les

clients avec bienveillance et ne causeront pas trop d’embêtements ?

Premièrement, disons qu’un peu de pla-nification mène loin. Commencez à penser à vos besoins dès maintenant. N’attendez pas à la dernière minute pour chercher. Sinon, il est possible que vous embauchiez la première personne qui se présente et le résultat pourrait être désastreux !

Deuxièmement, vous devez savoir qui vous entendez embaucher. Si vous n’avez pas de description de poste, préparez-en une, en énumérant les responsabilités, les tâches et les attentes du rendement escompté. Concevez également ce que

j’appelle un « Profil du candidat idéal » en exposant en bref les aptitudes, les traits de personnalité et les habitudes de travail qui vous permettront de trouver la personne idéale.

Une fois que vous savez ce que vous voulez, commencez à chercher. N’attendez pas. Agissez dès maintenant. Si vous em-bauchez des étudiants pour l’été n’oubliez pas qu’ils songent déjà à se trouver un emploi.

Une autre clé de réussite est le volume. Vous désirez attirer le plus de candidats potentiels possible pour avoir un meilleur


the résumé (because people do exaggerate and lie), 2) try to get some sense of the candidate’s communication skills, work ethic and attitude, and 3) describe the job in some detail to ensure the person really wants the position. Invariably, this process eliminates a few candidates.

Once you’ve completed your tele-phone interviews, conduct face-to-face interviews with your short list. During a face-to-face interview, spend 80 percent of your time listening and observing and only 20 percent of your time talking. Have candidates elaborate on their background, and ask clarifying and probing questions. Give them typical situations in your business and ask them how they would respond. Be careful not to feed them the answers. For example, don’t say “Here at our company, we operate as a team. Are you a team player?” What do you think they’ll say? If you don’t have a lot of experience interviewing, it’s a good idea to read a book on the subject or search the internet for interviewing techniques.

The final step before you make the hiring decision is to check references.

HIRING from page 8 Always, always, always check refer-ences. (Did I mention “Always check references”?) Failure to check references is one of the two biggest mistakes people make in the hiring process. (The other is failure to identify exactly what they’re looking for.) Obviously, contact the refer-ences provided by the candidate, but also contact representatives of other employers they’ve worked for whom they haven’t listed (unless they specifically ask you not to do so). Other checks may be appropriate as well, such as criminal-record checks for sensitive positions. And it doesn’t hurt to do a Facebook or a Google search. It’s interesting what can turn up.

Now, I know what you’re saying. I’m only hiring summer staff. All this sounds like it will take a lot of time. It will. But how important is it? How much harm can a bad hire, even a seasonal employee, do to your business? If they turn off a customer who decides to take his or her business to your competition, what’s the lifetime value of that customer? What about possible neg-ative publicity or the referral business that you’ll lose? And what about the time that you and other employees will spend train-

ing new hires and possibly having to cover up their mistakes? I find it puzzling that some businesses spend more time deciding what printer to purchase for the office than they spend deciding who to hire.

Sure, you can do the quick and dirty and hire whoever comes in the door – and you may get lucky and find a good employee or two. Or it may be a disaster. Either way, it’s just by chance. Taking the time to do it right will help ensure that you get the right people for the job and for your business. And let’s face it: your people are your business!

choix. C’est la loi des moyennes : plus il y a de candidats, meilleu-res sont les chances de trouver quelques perles. Il est sûr que vous devrez passer plus de temps à décider et c’est pourquoi vous devez commencer maintenant !

Comment attirer des candidats ? Les sites d’emploi sur Internet sont le premier choix des génies de l’informatique que sont les étudiants d’aujourd’hui. Les annonces dans les journaux coûtent chères et ne sont pas très efficaces, surtout quand il s’agit d’attirer des étudiants. Les guichets et salons d’emplois sont d’autres bonnes possibilités. Les petites annonces en lignes sur les sites tells que Ki-jiji sont des méthodes de plus en plus employées et nombre d’entre elles sont gratuites ! Les sites média sociaux tels que Linkedin et même Facebook peuvent être utiles pour annoncer. Vous pouvez vous adresser à vos employés existants pour des recommandations mais attention à la partialité. N’oubliez pas d’utiliser la vieille méthode de mettre un signe « aide demandé » à la fenêtre.

La prochaine étape est la présélection. J’emploie un système simple à l’aide de trois couleurs : vert, jaune et rouge. Vert signifie « bonne possibilité », des candidats à interviewer. Jaune signifie « plus ou moins bon », à contacter seulement si c’est nécessaire. Rouge signifie « aux oubliettes ».

Au cours du processus de présélection, comparez les curricu-lum vitæ ou demandes à la description du poste. Si le poste exige d’écrire bien et lisiblement, vérifiez si la demande est claire et bien écrite. Si le travail exige de soulever des charges lourdes et un travail physique, voyez si la personne a de l’expérience à cet effet. Si le service à la clientèle est important, recherchez des personnes qui ont déjà travaillé chez McDonald ou dans des magasins de détail.

Cherchez à connaître le sens éthique de la personne et sa performance au travail dans le passé. La scolarité et les accom-plissements à l’école, aux sport ou à des activités communautaires sont-ils mentionnés ? La personne a-t-elle déjà travaillé à temps partiel, ou distribué des journaux ?

Une fois que vous avez terminé votre présélection et choisi ceux et celles de la catégorie indiquée en « vert », vous êtes prêt pour les entrevues. Je pourrais écrire un livre sur le processus d’entrevue mais je vais me limiter ici à l’essentiel.

J’aime commencer par interviewer mes premiers huit candidats par téléphone (selon le nombre de postes à remplir). Cela peut prend plus de temps que voulu mais permet à la fin d’économiser du temps en éliminant dès le départ les non désirables. Lors de l’en-trevue téléphonique : 1) vérifiez et élucidez les renseignements sur le curriculum vitæ (certaines personnes exagèrent et mentent); 2) essayez de détecter les aptitudes à la communication du candidat, son sens éthique du travail et son attitude; 3) décrivez le travail en détail pour vous assurer que la personne désire vraiment le travail. Cette méthode vous permettra d’éliminer quelques candidats.

Une fois les entrevues téléphoniques terminées, le moment est venu d’avoir un face-à-face avec les candidats intéressants. Au cours de ce face-à-face, passez 80 pour cent du temps à écouter et à observer et 20 pour cent à parler. Demandez aux candidats d’élaborer et de vous éclairer sur leurs antécédents et sondez leurs dires en posant des questions. Exposez des situations typiques que vit votre entreprise et demandez de quelle façon ils réagiraient


Canadian Professional Mover Course

CAM’s Canadian Professional Mover course is Canada’s training program for moving consultants to learn about their role and moving services in Canada. Graduates earn a Canadian Professional Mover designation and can use the “CPM” logo on business cards and stationery. CAM member companies have access to the course for an unlimited number of employees for 12 months from the date of paid registration. Thirty students have graduated from the course since our last report on September 9, 2009.

Vous voici arrivé à la dernière étape, celle de vérifier les références. Il faut tou-

jours, mais toujours vérifier les références. (Ai-je bien dit « toujours vérifier les réfé-rences » ?) Les interviewers qui négligent de le faire commettent l’une des deux plus graves erreurs. (L’autre est de ne pas iden-tifier exactement la personne désirée). De toute évidence il faut contacter les référen-ces mais aussi les employeurs précédents non mentionnés (sauf si on vous demande expressément de ne pas le faire). Il pourrait également valoir la peine de vérifier, par exemple, s’il existe un dossier judiciaire, surtout s’il s’agit de combler un poste de confiance. Il peut être utile de chercher sur Facebook et Google. Il est intéressant de voir ce que l’on peut y trouver.

Je sais ce que vous pensez. Vous embauchez seulement du personnel saisonnier. Tout semble ici prendre beau-coup de temps. C’est vrai. Quelle en est l’importance ? Quelles pourraient être les conséquences d’embaucher la mauvaise personne, même pour un travail d’été ? S’il ou elle éloigne un client qui décide d’aller ailleurs, qu’elle valeur viable repré-sente ce client ? Que dire de la mauvaise publicité ou de la référence d’affaire que vous perdez ? Que dire du temps que vous et les autres employés prenez à former les nouvelles recrues et possiblement à cou-vrir leurs erreurs ? Je trouve bizarre que certaines entreprises passent plus de temps à décider de l’achat d’une imprimante qu’elles en passent au recrutement.

Il est possible que la première personne qui se présente à votre porte soit la bonne et que vous dénichiez même deux bons em-ployés ainsi. Il se peut aussi que ce soit un désastre. D’un côté comme de l’autre, c’est une chance à prendre. Prenez le temps de bien faire les choses et assurez-vous d’em-baucher les bonnes personnes pour le poste et pour votre commerce. C’est un fait : Votre personnel c’est votre commerce !

that is focused each year on a different theme. This year, notes Speers, “touch points” are in the training spotlight; whenever employees touch customers – on the phone, upon arrival at a home – they make an important impression. They are receiving ongoing training to make certain those impressions are positive. Just about everybody in the company – drivers, receptionists, operations people – receives training; three thousand man-hours a year are devoted to it.

In addition to implementing effective hiring and training policies for its employ-

ees, Armstrong focuses on retaining those employees. The company holds regular “Town Hall meetings,” at which employees can openly question and discuss company matters. Engaged in this way, employees gain a sense of ownership, fostering loy-alty to and pride in the company.

The Armstrong building, located near the busy intersection of Highways 410 and 407, was designed not only to be service-able for the company’s operations; it is also a nice environment in which to work, comfortable and attractive for staff.

in a fuel-dependent industry isn’t easy. Armstrong aims to do just that through its involvement with Tree Canada, explains Speers. Armstrong provides funds to that organization sufficient to plant a tree for each of its moves. The carbon dioxide consumed by those trees is intended to offset the CO2 from the company’s truck emissions. In addition, the new trees replace those culled to create corrugated material, used heavily in the moving industry. Armstrong is also well on its way to being paperless.

The company’s 85,000-square-foot facility was designed to be environment-friendly, as well as high-tech. All lighting and climate control in the building is energy efficient, operated from a sophis-ticated computer system. Security systems are equally advanced. For example, the warehouse sprinkler system uses a fast-response technology that targets specific risk areas, and a swipe-card system is in place to limit access within the building.

presented in 2009 to Doug Armstrong Sr., and brothers Dale and Doug Armstrong as individuals, it reflects on Armstrong Moving’s culture by extension. les jours, M. Speers avait été nommé pour leur succéder à la haute direction. Pour s’assurer que la compagnie demeura entre bonnes mains, un successeur, membre de l’équipe de gestion, a déjà été choisi. La planification de la relève est un facteur important, souvent négligé par les peti-tes et moyennes entreprises qui misent surtout sur fonctions opérationnelles de base sans trop songer aux imprévus. La planification de la relève chez Armstrong n’est que l’une de ses bonnes pratiques en gestion des RH.

La compagnie emploie environ 120 personnes qui parlent en tout, 17 dif-férentes langues. Ce nombre fluctue cependant avec les saisons comme dans les autres compagnies de déménagement. Le roulement du personnel est faible et la moyenne au service de la compagnie est de 19 ans. Pour trouver des personnes qui cadrent avec les besoins et la culture de la compagnie, Armstrong emploie les services d’un consultant extérieur.

Ce même consultant procure une for-mation axée sur un thème différent chaque année, signale M. Speers. Cette année le thème pour la formation est « les points de service ». Qu’il s’agisse de servir les clients au téléphone ou à l’arrivée chez le client, ils doivent laisser une impression favorable. Ils reçoivent une formation continue pour assurer un impact positif. À peu près tout le monde à la compagnie, camionneurs,

réceptionnistes, personnel de bureau, re-çoivent une formation; on y consacre trois milles heures/hommes par année.

En plus d’adopter des politiques d’embauche et de formation efficaces, Armstrong mise sur la rétention du per-sonnel. La compagnie tient régulièrement des réunions « genre hôtel de ville » où les employés peuvent poser des questions et discuter de certains enjeux. Embauchés ainsi, ils ont un sens d’appartenance, manifestent de la loyauté et font la fierté de la compagnie.

Le gaz carbonique que les nouveaux arbres absorbent vise contrecarrer les émissions de CO2 que produisent ses camions. En outre, les nouveaux arbres remplacent ceux coupés pour fabriquer des ondulés grandement utilisés dans l’industrie du

déménagement. Armstrong est également en voie de fonctionner sans papier.

Les aménagements d’une superficie de 85 000 pieds carrés sont conçus écologi-ques et à la fine pointe de la technologie. Les lumières et le conditionnement d’air sont éconergétiques et fonctionnent par un savant système informatique. Les systèmes de sécurité sont également très perfectionnés. Par exemple, le système d’irrigation par aspersion dans l’entrepôt utilise une technologie de réponse rapide dans les aires à risque et un système de carte magnétique est en place pour l’imiter l’accès à l’immeuble.

Website – Most businesses have a website, but are you cross-linking with other sites? Have you integrated an RSS feed from your Twitter account to update your page regularly? Do you update your content at least monthly to boost your

% ouvrent une session un jour ou l’autre. Il s’agit donc d’une sphère d’influence considérable que vous pouvez exploiter et il ne s’agit là que de l’un des nombreux outils à votre portée.

Il est temps de vous mettre à l’heure du marketing en ligne. Tous les outils ici mentionnés peuvent servir à promouvoir votre entreprise. Voici un guide rapide pour maximiser votre présence en ligne (ne sautez pas de points car il pourrait y en avoir que vous ne connaissez pas) :

foyer.) Il ne faut pas plus de 140 caractères pour faire des mises à jour aussi souvent que désiré et garder ainsi votre message devant les yeux de vos clients actuels et éventuels. Allez sur le site www.tinyurl.com pour convertir de longues adresses web en un format « tweetable », ce qui vous laisse assez d’espace pour ajouter un commentaire.

CAM adopted a new code of ethics at the Annual General Meeting in November 2002 and revised and simplified it in November 2003. The Code sets the standard of ethical behaviour for CAM members in their dealings with consumers, each other and the Association.code of ethics
