“More than a library, it’s a community…”

 “The Islamic Studies Library is more than a library, it’s a community and meeting place for

scholars to exchange ideas and socialize. The staff are a font of knowledge, very helpful and

experts in the field.

I came to Montreal from Pakistan and the Islamic Studies library became my home away from

home as I completed my MA in early Mughal history. I believe it’s important for immigrants

to connect with their cultures of origin, and the library has helped me do this. It houses rare

Arabic and Persian gems not available elsewhere. I found a lithograph that’s the only one of

its kind in North America.

Many volumes also contain great literature, stories of noblemen, heroes, villains and monsters,

as well as guides to morality and good government. Mughal history is often misconstrued,

and I’m trying to humanize it. I’m now working on a PhD that I hope to publish, which speaks

to an audience with little connection or exposure to Muslim work. I think such cross-cultural

communication is important […]”
