Our tour started almost under the wings of a replica silver Dart. This one flew in 1957 commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the first powered flight in Canada. Tamara, our well informed guide described the pioneering Canadian contribution to aviation in the years leading up to WW 1.

The first flight of the Silver Dart in Baddeck Nova Scotia was only 3 years later than the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk.

Technology moved forward rapidly during the war years. More robust structures, more powerful engines and aircraft that were easier to control. At the start of the war aircraft were used for observing the other side. By the end opposing aircraft were fighting with each other and attacking the opponents trenches.

The 1920s and 1930s were years that set the tone for Canadian aviation. Pilots returning from the war used aircraft from the UK, the USA and Europe to facilitate the opening up of the North. Canadian manufacturers sprung up and these were the formative years for our aviation industry. Canadian companies like Noorduyn and Fleet existed alongside “branch plants” of the likes of de Havilland and Fairchild. Aircraft technology went from wood and fabric biplane flying boats to robust all metal monoplanes equipped with floats.

The preservation of the Canadian aviation heritage is being accomplished in museums across Canada. The Canadian Aviation and Space Museum provides many examples of the expensive work that is necessary for museum quality and in some cases flightworthy rebuilds of past aircraft. This is a before and after example; the boat-like structure of the Curtiss HS-2L in the foreground emphasizes both the delicacy of these old aircraft and the dedication and skill that goes into their restoration. This restoration is just one that was done at the museum.

Many of the aircraft fighting in Europe were built in Canada, including some in this picture. These bright yellow aircraft were part of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan that brought recruits from commonwealth Air Forces to Canada for ab-initio and transitional flying and navigation training. In this picture are (l to r) a de Havilland Tiger Moth, a Fairchild Cornell and an Avro Anson. In the foreground you can see the tail and a wingtip of a Harvard, possibly the best known trainer in north America.

These are examples of the ‘planes graduates of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan would have flown when they got to Europe. The Lancaster in this picture was actually built in Canada, one of a few that did not make it into battle and is preserved as part of our heritage.

C a n a d a ’ s a v i a t i o n expertise grew rapidly during WW11 and in the post war years this was put to good use. Trans Canada Airlines started using small 10 seater aircraft and developed routes and operational expertise quickly. Our guide reminded us of when air travel was glamorous and much less predictable than today.

The pre-war bush plane heritage enabled our domestic manufacturing industry to flourish. This success is long lived and an updated version of the de Havilland Beaver is still in production.

The guided tour finished with the group standing in front of the display of jet era aircraft. These included aircraft from the late 1940s (a de Havilland Vampire) all the way up to a CF 18. This display area included aircraft from the UK, the USA and some domestically designed and manufactured. There is a cockpit and front fuselage section of one of the Avro Arrow prototypes. We had walked through the history of Canadian aviation history and seen how ingenuity took aviation technology from the Silver Dart to the Arrow in a few short decades and how diversity means that we can still produce de Havilland Beavers economically and be credible partners in the development of the F35.

Behind the tour group in this picture are a Harrier and a CL 84 tilt wing aircraft. These form part of the Helicopter and Vertical flight display. The tilt-wing aircraft was a Canadian experimental deve lopment i n the 1960 s . Th i s wa s a n attempt to combine the benefits of helicopter vert ical take-of f and landing with the higher speed cruise capability of fixed wing aircraft. The two propellors were connected by shafts so that the aircraft could still fly if there was an engine problem. There was no production of these aircraft but the lessons learned formed part of the knowledge base going into the Osprey.

Thank you Ben for arranging this visit and to our guide, Tamara, who was knowledgeable and selective and as a result the tour was a good sampling of the Museum. A few of the well known names in Canadian Aviation were mentioned during the tour, “Billy” Bishop, Wop May and others; the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame is a good place to start if you want to know more about these and the other people who started it all.
