Trends in UV curing systems

3

Rising cost of energy• Development of more energy-efficient UV dryers

Increasing awareness of the issue related to the environment & safety• Ozone free systems, UV lamps with higher life time

Continuous improvement of quality of printed job: • Thin plastic substrates printing (registration),

• Consistency vs time of emitted UV energy (food packaging)

• In line varnishing (mat/gloss, drip off)

• In line post printing operations (folding, dying, gluing,…)

UV LED (Light Emitting Diodes) : Principles & Features

4

LEDs are based semiconductor material emitting a light spectrum when submitted to an electric current.

Unlike conventional UV mercury (tubes) lamps, UV dryers consist of many LED diodes arranged in several lines and across the width

This principle consumes less energy and generates very little heat (IR).

Low temperature interesting for printing thin plastic substrates (eg Shrinkable sleeves, IML)LED emission UV spectrum is monochromatic (generally 385 or 395 nm) in contrast to the conventional UV Mercury lamps : no UV-B and UV-C

LED does not emit the in of short wavelengths: no ozone formation (no need for extraction)

Diodes have a very high life time. No waiting time to ignition (immediately operational after ignition).

No Mercury filled bulbs No IR emissions (thermo sensitive substrates)

Potential energy saving

Consistency of UV power over time

High life time (>/20000h vs 1000-2000h for standard UV)

Compact

Easy to handle

No exhaust system required (no ozone production)

Full power available immediately after switching on

No shutter required on the presses

French Law 2012-1442 (24/12/2012)

Printing inks & varnishes formulated with raw materials containing Bisphenol A (BPA) applied to the outside surface of a food packaging are affected by the application of the French law on BPA.

By consequence, for all products used in applications without functional barrier, all RM based on BPA have to be substituted.

Nestlé Guidance Note on Packaging Inks (Version: August 2016)

Ban of BPA based raw material status : French market & Nestlé applications

9

• Conclusion:• For the French packaging market or for Nestlé applications, food packaging without any functional

barrier, should be printed with UV inks free of raw materials based on BPA.

‘’General exclusions for ink formulations:This Note has negative lists of components. The components below are allowed by the SwissOrdinance, but are forbidden for Nestlé ink formulations due to quality and safety concerns…… Bisphenol A (BPA) and materials manufactured from or incorporating BPA in reacted form aspart of the chemical structure must not be used.’’
