NEMATODES, NEVER HEARD OF THEM
Simple, colorless, unsegmented roundworms (cross section)
Tube within a tube outer cuticle (skin)digestive system which extends from the mouth on the anterior end, to the anus located near the tail
Nervous, excretory, and reproductive systems, but no circulatory or respiratory systems
Size: 0.3 mm to over 8 meters

Most numerous multicellular animals on earth
Nine families of nematodes
20,000 described species
Present on all continents, except Antarctica
Free-living or parasitic
Parasitic species may cause important diseases of plants, animals, and humans
Species are beneficial and used as biological control agents

THE ENTOMOPATHOGENIC NEMATODES
Insect-parasitic nematodes
Diverse soil habitats : cultivated fields, forests, grasslands, deserts and ocean beaches
Two large families : the Steinernematidae (Steinernema spp. and Neosteinernema spp.) and the Heterorhabditidae (Heterorhabditis spp.)
Most studied species :Steinernema carpocapsaeHeterorhabditis bacteriophora
Obligate parasites of insects and used for biological control
Size : 0.5 to 1 mm

LIFE CYCLE OF THE ENTOMOPATHOGENIC NEMATODESLife cycle consists of :egg, four larval or juvenile stages (L1, L2, L3 and L4), adult stage, with a moult between each stage
Third-stage infective juvenile (L3), free-livingsoil dwellingpropagation of the infective juvenile in the soilLife cycle of Steinernema spp.

THE SYMBIOTIC BACTERIA
Family of the EnterobacteriaceaeLarge family of bacteria, including many of the more familiar pathogens, such as Salmonella and Escherichia ColiNormally part of the intestinal flora of humans or animals, they are found in water or soilAnimal or plant-parasiticXenorhadbus Steinernema spp.Photorhabdus Heterorhabditis spp.

THE MECHANISM OF THE NEMATODE-BACTERIUM COMPLEX
Penetration of the L3 larva through:natural body openings (mouth, anus, spiracles),areas of thin cuticle
In the haemocoel of the insect, release of symbiotic bacteria
The nematode/bacterium complex kills the insect within 1 or 2 days
The L3 feed upon the bacteria and liquefying insect, develop to adults and reproduce
A new generation of infective juveniles emerges 8 14 days after infection
2 or 3 generations can develop into the host cadaver

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN STEINERNEMA SPP. AND HETERORHADBIDTIS SPP.
STEINERNEMAIJs enter into the hemocoel through natural openings(mouth, anus, spiracles)
IJs carry the symbiotic bacteria in a specialized intestinal vesicle
IJs release the symbotic bacteria through the anus
First generation adults are amphimictic
HETERORHABDITISIJs have a tooth-like appendage near the mouth that penetrates the culticle directly
IJs carry the symbiotic bacteria in the midgut of the intestine
IJs release the symbiotic bacteria through the mouth
First generation adults are hermaphroditic

WHAT IS BIOLOGICAL CONTROL ?
The action of natural enemies (arthropod predators, insect parasitoids and microbial pathogens) that maintains a host population at levels lower than would occur in the absence of those enemies
2 broad categories, natural biological control applied biological control

EPNS USED AS BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENTS
Natural enemies of a broad range of insect pests
Extraordinary lethal to many important insect pests (crickets, flies, feas, beetles, rootworms )
Safe for plants and animals
More than 40 countries develop nematodes as biological insecticides (Becker Underwood, Andermatt, Koppert, BIT)
Sold in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and China for control of insect pests

RECHERCHE DOCUMENTAIRE

EXTRAIT DE TRADUCTION N 1(Chap. Biology of the nematode/bacterium complex)
The relationship between the nematode and bacterium is truly mutualistic for the following reasons: the nematode is dependent upon the bacterium for (1) quickly killing its insect host, (2) creating a suitable environment for its development by producing antibiotics that suppress competing microorganisms, (3) transforming the host tissues into a food source, and (4) serving as a food resource. The bacterium needs the nematode for (1) protection from the external environment, (2) penetration into the host's hemocoel, and (3) inhibition of the host's antibacterial proteins.

EXTRAIT DE TRADUCTION N 2 (Chap. Biology of the nematode/bacterium complex)Steinernematids and heterorhabditids, obligate pathogens in nature, have the non-feeding, free-living, third stage infective juvenile or dauer juvenile that infects the insect host in the soil environment (Figure 1). The infective juvenile, the only stage that occurs outside of an insect, is ensheathed in the second-stage cuticle that is easily lost in the steinernematids (Figure 2a) but is retained in the heterorhabditids (Figure 2b) until just prior to or shortly after host infection.
