Aloha and mensore to the next issue of our Uchinanchu Newsletter! The first months of the year started off with a wonderful Uchinanchu of the Year & Installation Banquet followed by a flurry of Shinnnen Enkai parties and celebrations to kick off 2020. I’m so thankful to share in our club members’ joys and celebrations and am impressed with each club’s continued effort to bring their families and friends together.

We are also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Hawaii Okinawa High School Student Exchange Program (HOSEP). As a former partici-pant, this program is near and dear to my heart and I am happy to see that we have been able to sustain this program through its many trans-formations and hope to make sure that we have the funding to keep this program for another 30 years.

This year our Okinawan community in Hawaii has much to celebrate. We are excited for our 120th anniversary celebration weekend coming up in May 16-17, 2020 and plans for special guests from Okinawa are moving along. We want to make sure that this is a celebration that will be remembered for years to come.

Often referred to as Okinawa’s favorite song, the lyrics to Tinsagu Nu Hana are a wonderful reminder about the value of advice from our par-ents and elders. For me, personally, this has deep meaning, and I wanted to share my favorite third verse of this beautiful song.

Yuru harasu funi ya ninufabushi miatiWan nacheru uya ya wan du miati

Just as ships that run in the night are guided by the North StarI am guided by my parents who watch over me

It’s not only our parent’s wisdom, but the guidance of the many vol-unteer leaders in our Okinawan community that we can count on. Let’s remember to appreciate our club leaders and share our talents with each other. What I’ve learned over the past few years in HUOA leadership is that as long as we support each other and care about each other as people, we will always be able to continue to build a bright future for HUOA.

I want to say thank you in advance to all of our HUOA members and friends who will continue to support our many activities, programs and events throughout the year.

    Ippee nihee deebiru and chibariyo!

2020 Census is Coming…Shape your community. Participate in the 2020 Census. Visit 2020CENSUS.GOV to

    learn more. The HUOA is

a complete count committee mem-ber, helping to promote the 2020 Census. The Census is a count of every person who lives in the United States and its territories. It happens every 10 years. It includes a few simple questions about things like age, sex, and the number of people who live in your home. Responding to the census is cru-cial, since the results help to determine how bil-lions of dollars in federal funding are allocated to states and communities each year for housing, schools, food assistance, health care, and other vital services.

Every household will have the option of responding to the 2020 Census online, by mail, or by phone. Starting in mid-March, you will receive an invitation to respond. Reminder letters and postcards will be sent out. A final reminder post-card will be sent at the end of April for those who have not responded. And finally, an in-person follow-up for all households that do not respond. To make the 2020 Census accessible to every-one, resources are available in several languages, including Japanese. Visit 2020census.gov for more information.

Help us count Uchinanchu in Hawaii! Census data provides useful statistics and can help us determine the number of Uchinanchu in Hawaii. When completing the Census, you will be asked questions pertaining to race. To self-identify, select “Other Asian” and write in “Okinawan”.

treated to a stellar performance featuring tra-ditional Okinawan music and dance. And in exchange, the students enjoyed a large pot-luck spread of delicious local food and an opportunity to meet and socialize with mem-bers. During their stay, the students also had an opportunity to visit Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus and participate in a cul-tural exchange.

Kin Town Friendship City CeremonyOn February 10, 2020 City & County of Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell and

Council Chairperson Ikaika Anderson, along with Council Members Brandon Elefante and Kymberly Pine, wel-comed Kin Town Mayor Hajime Nakama and assembly members to the Honolulu Hale Council Chambers for a Friendship City signing ceremony.

The ceremony was witnessed by members of the Kin Cho Yakuba (town office), residents of Kin Cho and Kin Chojin Kai Hawaii board members,

along with Consul General Koichi Ito, Honolulu Mayor’s Office representatives, HUOA and UJSH members.

A reception was held in the court-yard following the ceremony featuring the vibrant members of the Yuhi Daiko group from Okinawa and Colonel Brian Howlett, who read a congratulatory message from Colonel Larry Jenkins of Camp Hansen in Kin, Okinawa.

This event was significant for Kin Town as the two mayors had made their acquain-tances over two years ago and have since shared a common interest in their munici-pality’s resources and achievements. In

developing this friendship city relationship, the mayors noted that cultur-al exchanges for the children are an opportunity to strengthen the bonds between both communities. Kin Town is also home to Kyuzo Toyama, the father of Okinawan Immigration, who encouraged Uchinanchu to make the five continents their home.

YOH Holiday Senior Luncheon 2019Back in September, on the heels of a busy bon dance season, the Young Okinawans of Hawaii quickly shifted gears and began planning for

its 38th annual Holiday Senior Luncheon. The luncheon was held on Sunday,

December 8, at the Hawaii Okinawa Center and welcomed over 400 attend-ees with the support of 60 volunteers, including some from Waipahu High School, Punahou Japanese-Okinawan Club, Hui O Laulima, and Shinka.

As always, the event was free of charge for kupuna and included a bento lunch, freshly made andagi, door priz-es, a raffle drawing, and an exciting line up of performances by Urizun Minyo Group Hawaii, Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii, Kelli Miyahira, Double A with Amy & Aiko Yamashiro, and Ukwanshin Kabudan.

“Each year, we are so blessed to have this opportunity to celebrate our seniors,” says Event Chair, Collin Hoo. “Our next generation benefits immensely from the legacy that our kupuna have built, and we hope our gratitude is conveyed through this event and all year long.”

UJSH Honors David Shinsato as Young AchieverThe United Japanese Society of Hawaii (UJSH) held its 61st annual Shinnen Enkai on January 11. Hundreds gathered for the new year

celebration and to honor the kunsho recipients and young achiever honorees. This year, four young achievers were honored, including David Shinsato.

HUOA selected David as its honoree because of his dedication to leadership as the President of Ginoza Sonjin Kai and serving as a Club Representative on the Executive Council. He sets a great example for other young lead-ers and is always willing to help at various HUOA events. David is also an active member of the Hawaii Gagaku Kenkyukai, a group that performs ancient Japanese court music.

Gushikawa Shijin Kai Shinnen EnkaiBy Christopher Agena

Gushikawa Shijin Kai held its annual Shinnen Enkai on January 25, 2020, at Masa’s Cafeteria. 2020 is destined to be a great year for our club. The evening started off with outgoing president, Christopher Agena, thanking the club members, outgoing board members and advisors, and acknowledging

his wife, JoAnn, and their four chil-dren for all of their love and support during the six years that he served as president.

Christopher introduced our youth-ful incoming president, 28-year-old Drake Akiyoshi, who shared his story and an inspiring message that left no doubt that the future of our club is in good hands. During dinner, we hon-ored all of our members that were 80 years old and older, which included

Hidenobu Hiyane, who was 101 years young. This year, we featured a Keiki Korner again and a hot chocolate station for members of all ages to enjoy. We also installed our new board mem-bers: President, Drake Akiyoshi; Vice-President, John Hewitt; Secretary, Keline Akiyoshi; and Treasurer, Naomi Oshiro.

The formal entertainment portion of our Shinnen Enkai featured dancers from Tamagusuku Ryu Senjukai Frances Nakachi Ryubu Dojo and live perfor-mances by Ryukyu Koten Afuso-ryu Ongaku Kenkyu Choichi Kai USA, led by Grant Masandu Murata Sensei and featured members of Gushikawa Shijin Kai. We completed the evening with Kachashi.

Gushikawa Shijin Kai will be holding its annual picnic on August 2, 2020, at Ala Moana Beach Park, Area 8. Please bring your family and friends for some fun in the sun. Also, anytime during the year, please contact us at [email protected] and “LIKE” our Facebook page, we would love to hear from you.

Many supporters from Ginoza Sonjin Kai and HUOA came out to celebrate at the UJSH Shinnen Enkai and honor Young Achiever David Shinsato (seated in center).

For many years the event was held in November, but since Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne last year, the celebra-tion will now be held every February.
