a) Un goût : I love travelling. b) Comme sujet d'une phrase : Swimming is my favourite sport. c) Après "before" et "after" : before going to the cinema, I must clean my
bedroom.
Exemple : swimming, travelling.
Les emplois de "to"
a) Pour exprimer un désir : I'd like to travel. (J'aimerais voyager). b) Pour exprimer une volonté : I want to travel around the world. c) Pour exprimer un but : I'm phoning to invite you for dinner.
Les emplois de la base verbale (infinitif sans to) Il faut toujours mettre une base verbale après les auxiliaires modaux : can, must, may, etc.

Le texte s'ouvre par un tag de confirmation : "Your mother's a reporter, isn't she"? Yes, she is.
Exemple : Your mother is American, isn't she? He can swim, can't he?

Dear Mum and Dad, I hope you are fine. I'm having a great time here and I'm making lots of friends. Henry's my best friend. A week ago we …. an outing. At first, Henry and I ….. lost in the forest. We ….. because Henry, who's very self-confident, told me he could find his way back. I ….. him. I …. wrong. We ….. our way back at all. We ….. lost. We ….. a lot. To make things worse, it ….. raining. We …… shelter in a small wooden cabin which fortunately ….. to be there. We ….. there for about an hour. I …… worried and so was Henry. We ….. very much thinking about spending the night there. But when the rain …. we …. out, and after a ten minute walk we ….. Freddy and Cecil shouting our names. They were looking for us. What a relief! It was not until eleven that we ….. back to the camp. But all is well that ends well. I miss you both. See you soon.
Love. Peter
Exemple : When I was young I spent my holyday in London.
Exemple : Steven stood up, walked to the door and fell.
Exemple : They got married and had many children.
Exemple : I went to the cinema yesterday.

Exemple : I went to New York two years ago.
Exemple : I went to New York last year /yesterday / two days ago / in 1998.
Exemple : travel = travelled

2. LE PRETERIT EN "ING" (DIT PROGRESSIF)
Formation Auxiliaire was/were + base verbale + ing Il s'emploie : 1.
Exemple : Yesterday, at seven o'clock, I was watching T.V.
Exemple : I was sleeping when the telephone rang.
Exemple : While I was sleeping, my brother was playing video games.
1. Last Sunday, Peter (sleep) when Henry (turn on) the radio.
2. Last Monday, Peter (cut) himself while he (make) a plane.
3. Last Tuesday, Peter and Henry (fall off) their bikes while they (go) to the
swimming pool.
4. Last Wednesday, Peter (write) a letter, while Henry (read) a novel*.
5. Last Thursday, Henry (lose) his wallet while he (go) downtown.
6. Last Friday, Peter (watch) T.V. when he (receive) a phone call from London.
7. Last Saturday, Henry (listen) to music when he (drop) the radio.
