Skills learned• Collaborating with each other and others for
resources (Hector)• Being professional, presenting to someone other
than our peers• Creativity by coming up with a great idea to
engage the audience• Productive and accountability by “learning on
one’s own”
Methodist project• Anthony and I worked on this
with Raeden VanDenover (director of Organized System of Patient Care for UnityPoint Health Des Moines)
• Project in a nutshell• Really good program, would
recommend to anyone in need• Boring from time to time, but felt
good to help UnityPoint with such a beneficial project

different people including Raeden and staff• Collaboration by working with UnityPoint and
Raeden for this project• Productivity and Accountability because after
the first day we met she just sent us on our way and had us work on it whenever we could, but we still finished as fast as possible

Shadowing OMM• OMM is an additional set
of skills that only osteopathic physicians are trained to provide. This distinguishing skills set is used to both evaluate and treat the neuromusculoskeletal system-from the feet through the pelvis, spine and upper extremities (per DMU web)
• Shadowed Dr. Figueroa who went to ISU and DMU
OMM Patient 1
• Seen Dr. Fig for a while and had a forward rotated hip that caused lower back and rip pain
• Caused by slouching forward, picking something up while slouching, stepping off curb without knowing it
• Did series of hip and back manipulations
• Patient two was MIA (missing in action)• Forgot to come
OMM Patient 2
OMM Patient 3• Also seen Dr. Fig for some time but had
new pain in the front middle part of her head
• Recognized the trigger point for this pain came from tight neck muscles
• Palpated the muscle and found trigger point
• Inserted needle and pushed in and out• Then proceeded with injecting the
actual fluid
OMM Patient 4
• Left shortly after start of visit
• Back problems after long drive in Nebraska

Shadowing Foot and Ankle
• Shadowed Dr. Bennett and Dr. Mahoney• Podiatrists diagnose and treat conditions of
the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg
Foot and Ankle Patient 1
• Patient had ulcers on lower leg and a foot infection• Ulcers had been drained and infections slightly improved• Needed certain type of shoe but the company had messed up
and doctor wrote a new prescription• Med student helped apply new medicine to the wound which
were then wrapped
Foot and Ankle Patient 2
• Broken bone in foot, cast was cut off
• Small infections that also were cleaned by the med students
• Also was diabetic and has lost some toes
Foot and Ankle Patient 3
• Heel pain that Dr. Mahoney discovered came from the shoes the patient wore
• Stressed out the arches of the foot when the patient walked, stretching out ligaments in heel
• Caused patient to walk funny, back pain, trouble sleeping
• Altered the shoes, gave exercises
Informational Interview
• Original was Dr. Matz • Anatomy professor at DMU• Very very nice but very hard to get a
hold of to try and interview• 10 emails, 3 phone calls• Phone interview
Interview cont.• Interviewed David Birkey at
Accelerated Rehab, Waukee• Sadly know him too well• Wartburg, to Iowa, to
Mankato• Played football in college,
tore ACL• PT school at DMU (didn’t
know Matz)
Physical Therapists read mean tweets
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkH9Z-AhLAs
Questions• Knew career since he was in
high school, ankle injuries• Advice to young students was to
stay focused and on top of work, easy to fall behind or get lost
• Hardest step was applying and getting into PT school
• Average day is seeing patients all day, researching new techniques, filling out paperwork
Questions (cont.)
• Redo anything? Jumped around colleges too much, start with a plan
• Would have loved to have own clinic but its expensive to start, harder to keep going, and risky
