-
AIE, 2004

Charcoal is not included in this estimate. Wood used to produce charcoal is included, but charcoal is considered a secondary product.
Years Covered and Frequency of Update:
Data cover the years 1960-1999 for countries that are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Data for OECD non-members usually runs from 1971 to 1999, but coverage varies. For Example, data for many former Soviet Re
The IEA updates the energy consumption data annually. Revisions of the extended time series often take place. Users looking to analyze emissions trends should therefore download the entire time series instead of adding the most recent data to those from
Methodology:
The energy consumption values presented here are calculated by the International Energy Agency (IEA) using an energy balance methodology based on the calorific content of energy commodities.
All commodities are reported using a common unit: metric tons (tonnes) of oil equivalent (toe). One toe is defined as 10 Exp. 7 kilocalories, or 41.868 gigajoules. This amount of energy is equal to the amount of energy contained in a ton of crude oil.
Energy statistics are expressed in terms of net calorific value and therefore may be slightly lower than statistics presented by other statistical compendia. The difference between the net and the gross calorific value for each fuel is the latent heat of
The IEA has used the following conventions in accounting for primary energy such as nuclear, solar, geothermal, hydro, wind, etc.: 1) The first form of energy production with multiple practical uses is reported. This means that heat is the form reported f
Data Reliability and Cautionary Notes:
The energy balances data are primarily based on well-established and institutionalized accounting methodologies, and are therefore considered reliable.
The data as received from the provider do not distinguish between no data and zero values. WRI has distinguished between the two where possible, but some values represented as zero should probably be indicated by an X and vice versa.
Extreme caution should be exercised if considering using the data to extrapolate into the future. Energy usage is extremely variable from year to year due to short-term factors such as the weather and the economy that significantly impact any one year's

All commodities are reported using a common unit: metric tons (tones) of oil equivalent (toe), defined as 10 Exp. 7 kilocalories, or 41.868 gigajoules. This amount of energy is equal to the amount of energy contained in a ton of crude oil. To account

Biogases are gasses derived principally from the anaerobic fermentation of biomass and solid wastes which are combusted to produce heat and electrical power. Landfill gases and gases from sewage and animal waste facilities are included in this category.
