The colour palettes used on these magazine covers are generally monochromatic, red, pink and neutral. The monochrome colours generally give off a serious image for these magazines and make a bold contrast against the red, it’s effective because the black used makes the magazine look serious and bold. The white symbolises softness, a quality which is associated with women so that will fit in with the primarily feminine styles of the magazine covers. Red is also one of the main colour palettes used. Red is a colour which is often associated with sex and leadership, using it on the covers make the models appear more confident and sultry. Also, the contrast between white (representing purity) and red (representing sex) gives an audience a conflicting and bold image of the models, which is more likely to draw them in to buy the magazine because it is an interesting style. The pink colours used also represent playfulness, which is associated with youth. Young people are often more appealing to an audience, giving connotations of this with colour makes people more likely to buy the magazine. Finally the neutral tones give an understated elegance to the magazine covers and makes the warmer colours stand out more against the background. The overall combination of these colour palettes give a sophisticated, confident and youthful style to the magazines – all of these qualities will make an audience more likely to buy the magazine because of the image that they portray. For this reason I will be more likely to use these colours on my own magazine because they give an effective and appealing style.
