For the eighth time, CinEast, the Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg, will take you on a journey into the realms of the most recent cinema from the countries of the former Communist bloc. Diversity is once again at the heart of the pro-gramme of this new edition: there is diversity in origin and genre with fiction, documentary and animated films from 18 countries, diver-sity in venues, diversity in the audiences that we hope to welcome (all ages, from all back-grounds and all cultures), but there is also vari-ety in the programming, which often extends beyond mere film screenings, with debates, exhibitions, concerts and even gastronomy. Through film screenings and accompanying events, we hope to make the people of Luxem-bourg more familiar with this often overlooked part of Europe. We will showcase films that, in their vast majority, would otherwise have had little chance of being screened in this country. Furthermore, and above all, we want to enable people of different backgrounds and origins to come together, exchange ideas and have the chance to meet talented filmmakers and artists.

A number of films belong to the thematic cycle ‘Urban Stories’, which takes a closer look at East-ern European cities (as well as, to a lesser extent, those in the West) as a living space, a crossroads and a catalyst for social change. This cycle is also reflected in an extensive photography exhibi-tion at Neimënster, as well as in a debate dedi-cated to urbanism.

With the refugee drama that has been shak-ing - and sometimes dividing - Europe in recent months, Eastern European countries, especially the Balkans, have been in the media spotlight. We have decided to contribute to the immigra-tion debate through several documentaries and fiction films and a debate with specialists on the subject.

Many special events will complement the screenings, including concerts and musical eve-nings at Melusina, Neimënster, Sang & Klang and Rotondes and a live soundtrack performed at the Cinémathèque. Jazz, klezmer, gypsy, folk, rock as well as electronic sounds will be on the menu, often linked to screenings and food events.

More than ever before, we are striving to make our festival a platform for discovery and reflection, as well as a place for coming to-gether and exchanging ideas and opinions.

We would like to thank all the people and organ-isations, who - through their renewed trust and support - have made this edition of the festival possible, and especially you, the festival-goers. It is a source of great satisfaction and motivation for us to see you returning in such large num-bers every year.

We wish all of you many rewarding and enjoy-able times during this 8th edition and we look forward to seeing you in the cinemas and else-where.

CINE YOUTH

PROGRAMMES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG

PEOPLE

Andrzej Żuławski (1940), the guest of honour of the 8th edition and the presi-dent of the international jury, is an in-ternationally acclaimed film director with a career spanning over 45 years. His films have earned him numerous awards and he is undoubtedly one of the most renowned filmmakers from the region covered by the CinEast festi-val. You can explore Andrzej Żuławski’s original artistic style in the classic film Possession (1981) as well as his new opus Cosmos, awarded at the Locarno Film Festival earlier this year and which will be screened right after the Awards ceremony. And, of course, don’t miss the masterclass for a rare opportunity to get a better understanding of Mr. Żuławski’s work.

Ivaylo Hristov (1955) is a well-known Bulgarian actor and director, with a very good name in both film and thea-tre. As a film director, he has taken the top prize at this year’s Moscow Film Festival with his second feature, the black-and-white coming-of-age com-edy Losers. He will present the film personally at CinEast on 21 October and we will also screen his directorial debut Emigrants. Finally, you will be able to evaluate his acting skills too, because he plays one of the main roles in the very fresh film Thirst by Svetla Tsotsorkova.

Jiří Konečný (1973) is the man behind the production company Endorfilm based in Prague. We have been closely following the films (co-) produced by Endorfilm for a long time now and screened some of them in the past (Made in Ash, Matchmaking Mayor, etc.). Besides his excellent background in business and film production, Jiří proves to have a nose for promising and awards-attracting projects – three of which are on our programme: Family Film, Aferim! and Koza.

Andrzej Chyra (1964) is one of the most talented and sought after Polish actors of his generation. He has played many unforgettable parts under the guidance of renowned directors An-drzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi, Volker Schlöndorff, Krzysztof Krauze and Ju-liusz Machulski. CinEast festival-goers will have the opportunity to see him in The Collector and have a laidback chat with him at the Ancien Cinéma on 18 October and also participate in the Q&A after the screening of Carte Blanche the day after.

Mandragora is one of the most dy-namic production companies in Ro-mania, founded by Cristi Puiu and Anca Puiu in 2004. Mandragora is committed to the idea of making movies that explore new paths in cin-ematography and, with an impressive catalogue including The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, Aurora, Morgen (CinEast 2010 Grand Prix & Audience Award) and Viktoria (CinEast 2014 Special Jury Prize), the company has been shaping new Romanian cinema as we know it. And we are proud to be able to present its two latest productions Self-Portrait of a Dutiful Daughter and Back Home.

CinEast has again prepared several special evenings and combined pro-grammes. Four short film marathons will bring you a colourful panorama of some of the best fiction, documen-tary and animated shorts from the CEE countries and once again you will be the ones voting for the winners of the audience awards in the three catego-ries. A special “Focus on Immigration” evening will provide an occasion to reflect on the current situation around refugees through two films and a de-bate with filmmakers and specialists on the topic. Two thematic evenings are on the programme too: “War No More” juxtaposes a documentary-fic-tion about the WWII and the harsh re-ality of the current conflicts in Ukraine, while “Hard To Be Young” groups to-gether films about troubled youth in difficult life situations. One evening will also be dedicated to the work of the Polish actor Andrzej Chyra (spiced up with an informal chat with the art-ist) and another one to the festival’s very special guest and president of the jury Andrzej Żuławski. And on the last festival day, this time in the after-noon, you can discover Free Spaces @Mudam.

“Immigration: West Balkans – gate-way to the EU” - a debate on immigration A hot topic today, the way to better life taken by immigrants from war-torn and dysfunctional countries outside Europe often leads through Balkan countries, but this transitional part of their journey is not so much under the spotlight of media. (more info p. 21)

“Concrete living” – a debate on prefabricated housing and urbanismVast concrete blocks of flats – such a well-known environment for many of us, a typical and dominant element of most (not only) Eastern European cit-ies. What does the daily life in such pre-fab buildings look like? How does this style of housing influence our minds, interactions, family and social life? (more info p. 29)

CINE DEBATES

TWO FILMS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY DEBATES

Numerous films in the programme of CinEast 2015 (fiction, documentary and short) address the theme of the city as a living space, social phenom-enon and a constant influence on our destinies. We are witnessing mas-sive urbanisation of our civilisation and changing social patterns where individuals plunge into the anonym-ity and a wide pool of opportunities the cities can offer. In the framework of this cycle the festival’s film pro-gramme presents various “urban sto-ries” that provide a closer look at the reality of urban life in Central and East-ern European cities. This theme will also be at the heart of the extensive photography exhibi-tion at Neimënster’s cloître, present-ing the works of eight Polish, Slovak, Slovenian, Luxembourgish and Swiss artists (see p. 12). In addition, a debate on prefabricated housing and urban-ism entitled “Concrete living” will take place after the screening of the docu-mentary Concrete Stories (Neimënster 14 October).

that suits you better: enjoy a three-course dinner at the restaurant before the concert – reservations advised (www.melusina.lu/restaurant) or try cold & warm small dishes at the venue during the evening’s musical pro-gramme. Traditional Eastern European dishes will keep up your energy levels to party with us all night long! The traditional gastronomic even-ing at the Brasserie le Neumünster on 13 October will keep your stomach happy with a tasty selection of tradi-tional dishes, wines and beers. Create your own menu from various options from different countries and enjoy the authentic flavours of this gastronomi-cally lesser known region. Holders of CinEast tickets from the same day re-ceive a free aperitif. We advise you to make a reservation by contacting the Brasserie (www.abbaye.lu).

Also get ready to taste traditional dishes at the Gypsy Soul event at Ro-tondes (15/10), organised in collabora-tion with RIFF. CINE MUSIC

SOUNDS LIKE... FUN!

We have some tasty food for your ears as well! CinEast 2015 brings concerts and DJ events to please (almost) all musical tastes.

Why not start with an energy-rich chunk of Jewish music dipped in a spicy Balkan sauce? The Polish band Klezmafour plays an original hot-blooded variation of Eastern European klezmer music tinged with Balkan, jazz and punk rock elements and is known for being keen on jumping on stage. Their gig at Melusina (Saturday 10/10) will be followed by a Balkan party with DJ Kosta Kostov, who will take over the dance floor with his legend-ary blasts of energy mixing rhythms and cultures. Be prepared for anything and everything!

For a slightly more ‘classy’, but not less enjoyable dish head to Neimënster on Saturday 17/10. The Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Włodek Pawlik, who is also a renowned film music composer, will serve you tunes from

his latest albums Night in Calisia and America, as well as some of his most famous film melodies. He will be ac-companied by Paweł Pańta on bass and Cezary Konrad on drums. An ex-ceptional event in collaboration with the Autumn Leaves festival.

Or would you prefer an entertaining silent film accompanied by the live performance of a youthful experi-menting ensemble? Cinéconcert by Neuvěřitelno (Cinémathèque, 20/10) promises a delicious mélange of old-school slapstick comedy An Old Gang-ster’s Molls and inventive live sound-track produced using various musical instruments and kitchen utensils. The Czech trio has toured with the film extensively, so the recipe for the first ever Luxembourg show is certainly well refined.

CINÉCONCERT

An Old Gangster’s Molls(Czechoslovakia 1927)

Last but not least, the festival’s Clos-ing Event (Sang&Klang, 24/10) acts as a counterattack against the “Urban Stories” theme. Time to forget concrete buildings and get back to roots and high, mud-covered boots with an East-West country clash! Featuring concerts by Freeborn Brothers (gypsy hobo trash grass from Poland) and Sean & Zander (folk, country, bluegrass from the US), this is right from the heart and a treat not just for banjo and folk guitar enthusiasts. Anti-urban farming style dress-code recommended and food available!

And if this is not enough, why not check out gypsy&Balkan sounds at the colourful Gypsy Soul event at Rotondes (15/10) or get some cheesy Asian pop flavours at Liza & Tokyo Disco at Gudde Wellen (22/10).

Neimënster 8–25 October 2015

Complementing the CinEast festi-val’s thematic cycle Urban Stories, an eponymous photography exhibition will be presented to the public, bring-ing together works of 8 artists from Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, as well as Switzerland and Luxembourg, looking at the city as a phenomenon of social organisation interwoven in a specific architectural context, which is contin-ually changing over time.

The selected projects mainly focus on interactions between people. They show an urban space, which, on the one hand, separates and can make you feel lost, but which, on the other hand, is a place of integration and social in-teraction. Similarly to photographic film, urban architecture perpetuates the passage of time, of political re-gimes, and of different uses and con-ceptions of urban space.

The extensive project by the recently deceased photographer Zbyszko Siemaszko shows the vitality of the inhabitants of Warsaw in the 50s, 60s and 70s. These historic photographs are accompanied by photographs by Mateusz Grybczyński depicting con-temporary Warsaw. Following in the footsteps of Siemaszko, he documents the massive changes taking place but also shows relics of the city from half a century ago.

The joint project by Katarzyna Majak and Boris Loder is an interesting pho-tographic dialogue between a Polish and a Luxembourgish photographer. Both use a similar photographic aes-thetic in trying to glean from the chaos of the urban space some characteristic and meaningful elements in their city. The series ‘Walking Down a City’ by Iza Łapińska* is a subjective pho-tographic tale about several cities in Eastern and Western Europe. It is a photographic record of her personal experience of taking control of a new urban space by fixing a frame, a struc-ture, some lines, light and shadows.

Olja Stefanović Triaška’s project “To-talitarian architecture / totalitarian time” and “Socialist modernism” by Ro-man Bezjak present relics of overpow-ering communist architecture in cities and towns of Eastern Europe. These relics could tell many stories but we must be ready to hear.

Traces of the past are not just pre-sent in urban spaces, they are also drawn on the faces of their inhabit-ants. The Swiss photographer Thomas Leuthard went to explore these traces in several Eastern European cities and captured some very poignant and eloquent portraits. They may also have many ‘urban stories’ to tell. [Vernissage 8/10 at 18.00]

BODY / CIAŁO (Poland 2015) by MAŁGORZATA SZUMOWSKA drama/black comedy, 92 min, en subtitles Present-day Poland, with scandals emerging in the newspapers. A busy criminal prosecutor and recently widowed alcoholic is worried that his daughter might try to harm herself. Olga – anorexic and still grieving over her recently deceased mother. And Anna, her psychia-trist, who realised after her little son’s death that she possesses the power to communicate with the dead. The intertwined stories of three characters with radically different approaches to the body – a prosecutor confronting death in his daily work, a sick woman who hates her appearance and an alternative therapist who doesn’t care about physicality and is searching for a kind of spiritual body.

Having won the Silver Bear award at the Berlinale, this is an uncon-ventional combination of seriousness and humour, mystical drama and the grotesque. It is a story about the inextricable link between mind and body, grief after losing a loved one and different ways of dealing with it.

FOCUS ON IMMIGRATION

ŽELIMIR ŽILNIK (1942) is a renowned Serbian film-maker. Since the late 60s, his socially engaged films and documentaries in former Yugoslavia and his unique visual style have earned him criti-cal accolades (Early Works, Golden Bear for Best Film at Berlinale 1969), but also censorship in the 70s for his unflinching criticism of the government apparatus. Low budget film-making and challenging political themes mark Žilnik’s prolific career that includes over 50 feature and docu-mentary films, and shorts.

A hot topic today, the way to better life taken by immigrants from war-torn and dysfunctional countries outside Europe often leads through Balkan countries, but this transitional part of their jour-ney is not so much under the spotlight of media. The renowned Serbian documentary maker Želimir Žilnik, the author of the film Logbook Serbistan, will discuss the situation with Serge Kollwel-ter, Luxembourgish activist of integration and human rights, and the duo of directors of the forthcoming Luxembourgish docu-mentary Mos Stellarium, Karolina Markiewicz and Pascal Piron.

CINÉ-CONCERT WITH THE CZECH TRIO NEUVĚŘITELNO

NEUVĚŘITELNO, a trio of outstanding young Czech mu-sicians, will perform a live soundtrack to the recently re-stored version of the silent film An Old Gangster’s Molls by Svatopluk Innemann (1927), a classic slapstick com-edy starring the famous Czech comedian Vlasta Burian.

The band’s name translates as ‘The Unbelievable’ and their music is a mixture of styles such as rock, jazz, swing, blues, with elements of traditional folk and classical mu-sic. Having performed live scores to numerous films, the band ensures that their music accentuates the film’s mes-sage, is built around it, respects its soul and lets the im-ages ‘breathe’. Neuvěřitelno use a range of instruments such as guitar, double bass, mandolin, drums and kalimba, but also ex-plore the sounds of voices, percussion and all sorts of ar-tefacts, some of which belong in the kitchen rather than to a band of musicians. They have performed with the film at various venues and festivals around Europe (Bonn, Warsaw, Pordenone, etc.) and this is their first ever perfor-mance in Luxembourg. With the support of the Czech Embassy in Luxembourg

S&K19.00 CLOSING EVENT WITH FREEBORN BROTHERS AND

Freeborn Brothers play a dangerous mix of musical styles overflowing with energy and humour. Constantly touring Europe, the three-member Polish band played around 200 shows in 2014 in more than 14 countries. While their first album Two Man Orchestra (2013) featured highly energetic songs and some spooky waltz, the recent second collec-tion, Gypsy Hobo Trash Grass, is a little more melodic, burst-ing with songs made with heart and soul.

Loads of fun guaranteed! With the con-certs of two eccentric bands - the Free-he Free-born Brothers (PL, gypsy hobo trash grass) and Sean & Zander (USA, folk, country, rock, bluegrass) – as well as Eastern Euro-pean food and drinks, the Closing Event of CinEast 2015 should be as enjoyable as lounging on a stack of hay!

East vs. West country clash! Come hungry, traditional food available.

Unfortunately, it usually turns out quite badly and the result is not always what is expected ... The funny awkwardness and surprising inventiveness of the two adorable characters will certainly win the hearts of even the most non-technically oriented children. 25 OctoberSunday

As in previous years, the CinEast 2015 festival is organis-ing its own Charity Project. Thanks to your contributions last year we managed to help the orphanage in Udaitsi (Ukraine) and make the lives of the children living there a bit more cheerful. This year we would like to support the Polish foundation ‘Gajusz’ (based in Łodz), which provides care for children with chronic and incurable diseases in a hospice and in people’s homes as well as perinatal care.

“The Palace” is what they call their hospice, which is dedi-cated to children who are terminally ill and deprived of parental care – mostly orphans whose parents cannot or do not want to be reached. The Palace is their home, not their hospital! Both the medical staff and the volunteers make this place a very safe, cosy and a cheerful place to be.

Thanks to the home care service, patients can spend their most valued and treasured days in the comfort of their homes, with their parents by their side. Gajusz provides around-the-clock free medical, psychological, and social care.

In the framework of the perinatal care, Gajusz oversees the care of our youngest patients, before and after their birth. Families receive free professional support (medical, diag-nostics, psychological, social and organisational) and pal-liative care for children born with terminal birth defects.

They help every child, no matter how small they are, be-cause no children should suffer loneliness.

With your contributions we could help Gajusz improve the living conditions of their little patients. The founda-tion would like to buy a device which cleanses the air in the rooms of sick children and creates a healthier environ-ment, reducing the risk of airborne pathogens affecting patients.

How can you support this initiative? You can put your do-nations in one of our piggy banks available in the main venues. They will be publicly smashed open and your do-nations will be counted by volunteers at the last festival event at Neimënster on Sunday 25 October, the screening of the film Gods. After the screening and during the days which follow you will also be able to purchase photos from the “Urban Stories” exhibition. But you can also help by simply purchasing the festival pass - 1 EUR from each pass purchased goes to the Charity Project automatically. 100% of the collected funds will be sent on to Gajusz.
