Community Calendar What a great day for a yard sale!! Mother Nature gave us a beautiful, sunny day, and many participated in our Community Yard Sale this year -- our streets were crowded with lots of cars, vans, and trucks full of bar-gains and treasures. A big thank you to everyone who participated in our sale this year, both buyers and sellers. We appreciate all of you who participated in our map and vendor hand-out, and we hope you had people visit your home who were interested in the types of items you were selling. Kudos to Beth Smith for all of her advertising ef-forts. Our sale was publicized in the weekly newspapers in Western Fairfax and Eastern Loudon Counties. She designed and posted the eye catching signs at the com-munity entrances, and distributed many individual signs to vendors. Thanks, Beth. Great job!! Also, a big thank you to Sharon Denisar for coordi-nating the map and vendor handout distribution at the four community entrances. Most of the 200 handouts were taken by prospective buyers. And, thank you to Jeff Parnes for posting our vendor list on our CHHA website for residents to access the Friday before the sale.

Community Yard Sale -- A Big Success!! By Susan McCullough

Your Feedback is Requested

Since this is the first time we distributed a community map and vendor listing, we would like to know if you think it was a worthwhile endeavor. • Do you think participating in our handout was bene-

ficial to you? • Would you participate again in the future? • Do you have any ideas for enhancements for next

year? • Please send your feedback to Susan McCullough at

[email protected] or call (703) 904-8453. See you next year!!

Take an active role in keeping the streets in Chantilly Highlands at their best! Be observant and contact John Ford, Area 3 Supervisor at 703-383-2753 to request pot hole repairs and repaving.

Un-der the Ordinance, the following acts are violations during the listed hours: 1. Operating loud speakers and amplifiers (exterior of building)

Federal Holidays 9 PM - 7 AM 4. Repairing vehicles or equipment (outdoors) 9 PM - 7 AM 5. Operating powered model vehicles (outdoors) 9 PM - 7 AM 6. Home Security This month, I would like to touch on burglaries and how you can prevent this crime. LIGHTS are one of the MANY prevention tips. Not only are they beneficial for you, but for officers responding as well. Light up the back and front with sensor lighting. Approach your house like the "Burglar." Ask yourself whether you have made it easy for them to gain access into your home. Know what types of locks you have. Know if the strike plate is appropriate for your lock/door. If you have doubts ....CALL ME!! Home Security Surveys are FREE and applicable to YOUR home. We will set up an appointment when it is convenient for you. My number is 703-352-2163. Auto Security Take a special look at the types of vehicles being targeted and stolen in your area. Be aware and prevent crime from hap-pening. Don't leave your doors unlocked. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR VEHICLE! Report suspicious activ-ity. REPORT, REPORT, REPORT!!! IF WE DON"T KNOW, WE CANT SHOW!!! Your calls count and work!! Don't talk yourself out of phoning the police. If you question the activity....REPORT IT!!

Crime Prevention Tips From Officer Kim M. Doran

On July 1, 2001, the ACC will begin to inspect all properties in the community for violations of the 2001 Guidelines and Standards. If a violation is noted, a Let-ter of Discovery will be issued as the first step in getting the property into compliance. A homeowner will then have 30 days to correct the violation. Failure to comply could result in fines, loss of com-munity privileges, and/or legal action upon which the homeowner will be responsible for all association costs.

Reminders

• Exterior alteration requests must be submitted at least 30 days prior to scheduled work. The commit-tee may take up to 60 days. (Forms located on web-site at www.CHHA.org.)

• All decking and fencing material may be stained or left to weather. Painted wood is not acceptable.

• Lattice is not an acceptable fence. Check guidelines for examples.

• Neighbors should be consulted on the construction of structures such as fences, additions, play equip-ment, etc., with the goal of minimizing visual im-pact.

• Any change in house colors requires an exterior al-teration request. Colors must blend with surround-ing homes.

Members of the ACC wish to thank the residents of Chantilly Highlands who work with us to maintain the standards that protect our real estate values and keep our community looking great. Remember that it is the residents who make Chantilly Highlands a desirable community, and not just a place to live. Have a great summer!

Parent: I realize that it is June but could I still sign my child up for the swim team? Answer man: Absolutely! Wed be happy to have you. Youve only missed a few practices and we wont have our first meet for two weeks. You may join the swim team at any time, just pay the $20 late fee and off you go. We want to encourage as many children as possible to come and improve their swimming skills. Parent: I am a first time swim parent and my child and I are a little nervous about this whole thing. Answer man: Relax. The swim team is an easy going, good time and your child will not be forced to do anything he doesnt want to do. The practices are of varying de-grees of difficulty to accommodate the brand new mem-ber as well as the swimmer with years of experience. Very few of our experienced swim team parents have had any kind of competitive swimming background. Parent: I just signed my son up for the swim team last month, and I must say I was quite taken aback when I discovered that I would have to volunteer for five jobs. Couldnt I just be the snack Dad a couple times like Ive done for my sons soccer team. Answer man: Absolutely! Just make sure that you bring enough food and beverage to keep 250 people happy for 2 1/2 hours. Think of it as good practice for handling the catering at your daughters wedding reception. Parent: You must be joking! Answer man: No Im not. From the local summer swim team, all the way to the Olympics, no other sport requires more parent volunteers. It takes 44 parents to put on a meet; if they all work the entire session. If some go home early, it takes a lot more. The home team provides about two thirds of the parents with the visiting team providing the rest. Parent: I dont know a thing about swimming. Do you think I still might have what it takes to be an effective vol-unteer? Answer man: Because of the diverse positions available, we have yet to find a parent that is not capable of han-dling at least one of the tasks. Different Parent: I have brought heartbreak, despair, and misery to every organization that my child has ever been involved with. I am totally self-centered, its all about me, me, me. My child is faultless. When he burps, I swear its Beethoven. I know the best way to do everything, and no one can meet my standards or make me happy. Do you think I can find contentment as a swim team Mom? Answer man: Absolutely! I dont know exactly how it hap-pens but when you become a swim team parent all that psychological baggage just falls away and your neuroses will dissipate like the ethereal mist rising from the Chan-

tilly Highlands pool in the cool of the morning. Parent: You know, that list of swim team volunteer duties is basically mundane grunt work. I am a very busy and important person. Name one other person that is more famous and/or busy than I am who would stoop to do such plebeian tasks. Answer man: Joe Jacoby, former All Pro offensive line-man for the Washington Redskins, holder of three Super Bowl rings and business owner. Joe and his wife do the same grunt jobs for their kids swim team as you will be doing for yours. Parent: You know, if big Joe will mingle with the pro-letariat and carry little pieces of paper from point A to Point B in order to be of service to the children of the area I too will serve, with joy in my heart and a smile on my face. Answer man: Good.

Lawn Services, On June 25, the last garden club meeting before summer break will feature a workshop on Stained Glass Stepping Stones presented by our own Barbara Defendorf. These stepping stones make a wonderful gift and addition to any garden. While kits to make a stepping stone required advanced sign up, there will be plenty of opportunity at the meeting to learn the how-to of this wonderful craft. All meetings are held at the Community Center at 7 PM and include light refreshments. Over the summer we will be posting awards in the Community Center received during the 5 years the Garden Club has been in existence. A hearty Thank You to the CHHA Board from the Garden Club! We are also continuing work on a website to link to the Chantilly Highlands Home Page. More news on these to follow in future Highlander articles. Dont forget to mark your calendar for June 2nd for the Adopt-A-Spot clean-up along Stone Heather Drive. Meet at 9:00 AM at Starbucks for complimen-tary coffee. Vests and trash bags will be provided.

A great big THANK YOU to the neighbors who spent a very warm Sunday afternoon spreading mulch at the tot lot. The board and community appreciate the time and hard work of Rich and Celine Contos and family; Gary Green; Mark and Portia Helme and family; Sharon and Heather Hough, Mary and Brian McBride and family, Loretta and Peter Malander; Patrick, Michael, and Sean Palmer; Scott and Cynthia Peters and family; Lisa and Quinn Shorten; Bill Wolff; Darin, Kathy, Joshua, and Grant Welt; and those who stopped playing to help. A special thanks to Patrick Palmer for providing the mulch. The playground looks fabulous! Coming Soon Some of the playground equipment is in need of repair and a new bridge is required. Parents, please watch that your children play safely and avoid crossing the bridge until the new one is installed. Trash A plea to patrons of the playground and picnic area. If the trash-cans are full, please collect all garbage and dispose of it in the large brown dumpster in the parking lot or one of the blue bar-rels. The types of visitors that are attracted by the trash are not the types of visitors we want playing with our small children.

The Envelope Please. And the Cappie goes to …….

Well, the season has ended for the Chantilly High School Theater Department but the excitement isnt quite over. The Departments show, Room Service, performed last fall has been nominated for seven Cap-pie awards. Founded in 1999, this path breaking "Critics and Awards Program" (Cappie) is adding ex-citement and public acclaim to high school theater. Through the Cappies, high school students attend and review each others shows, publish their reviews in lo-cal newspapers, and participate in a year-end, Tonys-style Cappies Gala. "Since we've invented the Cap-pies," said Fairfax County School Superintendent Daniel Domenich at last year's Gala, "there's no place in the world that does high school theater any better than we do it right here in Northern Virginia." Thirty-four Northern Virginia high schools and the Duke Ellington School in the District participated in this years program and the nominations have just been announced. Chantilly High Schools hilarious presenta-tion of Room Service garnered seven nominations in-cluding Best Set Design, Best Performance by an En-semble, Best Performance by a Leading Actor, Best Cameo Performance by an Actor, Best Comic Per-formance by an Actor, Best Play, and Chantilly High-lands resident Reema Hijazi was nominated for Best Comic Performance by an Actress. Congratulations to Reema and the entire Theater Department for these nominations and for a great season of performances. The awards will be handed out at the Annual Gala on June 9th at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Per-forming Arts. With two main stage productions, two Childrens Theater productions, the annual Christmas Carol pro-duction, and participation in the annual Folger Shake-speare Festival, the Chantilly High School Theater De-partment offers student performers many opportuni-ties to display their talents for audiences of all ages. Watch for next seasons production and join in the fun!

Helpful Hints for a Successful Pool Season

• Review the Pool Rules printed in the May issue. • Share the Pool Rules with your children and teach them their

lot number. • Remind them that if they are dismissed from the pool three

times, that they lose their privilege for the entire summer. • Family photos for the Rolodex are due by June 15th. • If dues have not been paid, access to the pool will be denied. • As a favor, the lifeguards sell snacks during break. • Snacks are sold only during break. • Snacks will not be sold at the final break of each day. • Bring quarters to the pool for the pay phone and snacks. Life-

guards are not permitted to make change. • Food is only permitted in the fenced-in areas. • Each person is responsible for disposing of their trash. • Volunteers are needed to take inventory and purchase snacks

periodically. Contact Bill Wolff if you can help. • Cut the pool hours at right and post on the refrigerator. • 2-Week group swim lessons will be offered for $35. Private

lessons are provided by all lifeguards for $12/half hour lesson. • Be courteous to the young adults running our

pool at all times. They are there to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun season at the pool!

Believe It Or Not, Proper Care & Cleaning Of Your Carpets Can Promote A Healthier Home

The EPA recommends cleaning your carpets every 12-18 months to remove unhealthy elements. Chem-Drys exclusive low moisture system can do a better job of preventing mold, mildew, fungus, and bacteria from growing in your carpets compared to steam cleaning. The hot carbonating solutions made of ingredients copied from nature make Chem-Dry the natural choice.
