EVERY MEMBER OF THE GROUP SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING BASIC EQUIPMENT:

Avalanche victim search device (avalanche transceiver)Mere possession of an avalanche transceiver does not suffice. Each member of the group must be familiar with his device and practicewith it regularly. (See www.ortovox.com for practice opportunities).

Avalanche shovelRescuing avalanche victims is only possible with a shovel.

Avalanche probeA probe is required for fastest possible precise locating with the pinpointsearch procedure.

First-aid kit For administration of first-aid to the injured

Bivouac sackProtects against hypothermia and can be used as a transport aid

Supplemental equipment for added safety:Mobile phone – for organizing professional help.

Each member of the group has an avalanche transceiver on their person, and a shovel and probe in their backpack.

SWITCHING ON THE AVALANCHETRANSCEIVER

Switch the quick switchto receiver mode (11)to transmit mode (5).

ON/OFF - insert the for-ced ON/OFF bayonetswitch (8) in the openingof the d3 casing. Nowpress the switch lightlyand turn it a quarterturn (90 degrees) until itengages. The transmitcontrol light (7) will nowstart to flash in synchwith the transmitterrhythm. The d3 is nowtransmitting.

WEARING THE CARRYING CASE

Grasp the shoulderstrap loop of the carry-ing case on the orangesewed-on badge (16)with the lettering "shoul-der strap" and placethis loop over head andshoulder. Guide the free end ofthe strap with the forcedON/OFF bayonet switch(8) around the back andconnect the forcedON/OFF bayonet switchwith the device. Theergonomic shape of thed3 is based on the bodycontour – consequentlyalways wear the d3with the display sidefacing inside.

Transmitting: After switching on thedevice the display testappears in the displaywindow (10). Availablebattery capacity isshown in % (99-01) for10 seconds.

When the remainingcapacity drops to 10%the battery display willflash in the display wind-ow. Afterwards the dis-play will shut-off to con-serve battery power. (When 10% residualbattery capacity is dis-played it is time toreplace the batteries.)The transmit/controllight (7) will also flash.

Now the device is readyto operate and it istransmitting. The trans-mit function can bechecked with a secondavalanche transceiverthat is set to receive.

Change-over to receive: To receive, push the locking and emergencyswitch (6) to the right, turn the quick switch to receive mode (11) to the left and ensure thatthe locking switch (6)engages.

TRANSMITTING, RECEIVING, SWITCHING BACK TO TRANSMIT

Switching back totransmit/emergencychangeover to transmit: To return to transmitmode (5), push the locking and emergencyswitch (6) to the right. The quick switch toreceive mode (11) willautomatically return tothe locked transmit position (5).

Now set a second deviceto transmit mode (5).After the d3 switchesover to receive, you willhear the signal of thetransmitter; in the dis-play you can read thedistance to the trans-mitter, and the threedirection arrows indicatethe search direction. The transmission con-trol light is switched offin receive mode.

For a few seconds "CH"(=CHeck) will be display-ed. During this time thed3 checks the displayfunctions and determi-nes the optimal receivemode. After "CH" disap-pears the d3 is readyfor searching. Uninten-tional switch-over totransmit mode is notpossible.

Checking the earphone function:

The d3 is equipped withan earphone connectionfor a trouble-free groupsearching.Insert the earphone pluginto the earphone socket(2) and switch the d3 toreceive mode. Now youcan hear the signal ofthe transmitter that isbeing searched in theearphone, the searchdirection arrows indicatethe search direction, and the distance to thetransmitter is shown inthe display. The integra-ted loudspeaker (3) isswitched off when theearphone is plugged in.

DAILY FUNCTION CHECK BEFORE STARTING A TOUR!

Check the receivers:• All group members set their avalanche

transceivers to RECEIVE MODE.• One member (preferably the group leader) sets

their avalanche transceiver to TRANSMIT MODE.• If all avalanche transceivers receive acoustic and

visual signals, the receivers are working correctly.

Checking the transmitters: • After checking the RECEIVERS, group members

must test the function of their TRANSMITTERS.• The group members set their avalanche trans-

ceivers to TRANSMIT MODE and pass by thegroup leader’s receiver ONE BY ONE at a dis-tance of about 15 m. When the group leaderreceives acoustic and visual signals from everysingle group member’s avalanche transceiver, the transmission function is OK.

If you notice any deviations from the functions de-scribed, please send your device directly to the ORTOVOX service centre for repair (see page 104).

VICTIM SEARCH

Open the quick lock(15): Pull the d3 trans-ceiver out of the carry-ing case and pull it about0.5m away from yourbody. The strap systemand the elastic cord willstill secure the deviceto your body so there isno risk of losing it.Switch-over to receivemode: Turn the quickswitch to receive mode(11) from transmit mode(5) to receive mode (9).To do this the lockingswitch (6) must be pus-hed to the right. Thesignals of the other devi-ces can now be recei-ved.

Emergency change-over to TRANSMIT -in the event of asecond avalanche!

Push the locking andemergency switch (6) tothe right with yourthumb. The emergencyswitch will automaticallyreturn to the securedtransmit position and thed3 will start transmitting.

Optimizing reception: Due to the laws of phy-sics, reception dependson the relative positionof the receiving andtransmitting devices' antennas. Maximumrange can only be ob-tained when the two devices are arrangedon a longitudinal axis, one behind the other.Consequently we recom-mend that you delibera-tely turn the ORTOVOXd3 in all directions tofind the best receivingposition when searchingfor the first signal.

Failures in the perfor-mance of the transmis-sion and reception func-tions can be caused bylightning, lift and powersystems, radio equip-ment, mobile telephonesand other electronicequipment. Mobile tele-phones and radio equip-ment should be swit-ched off during a search. The minimum distancebetween two avalanchetransceivers or to me-tal, radio equipment, mobile telephones etc.should be at least 30 cm.

COARSE SEARCH (= Search for first receive signal):If searching alone, walk through thepresumed area in 30 m wide searchstrips to pick up the first signal.

Pay attention to the lateral distanceto the edge of the avalanche.

The d3 allows a search strip widthof 30 m.

After the first signal is received, proceed in the indicated direction(= lowest number in the display).

COARSE SEARCHwith several helpers(=search after first receive signal):For searching with multiple helperssearch through the avalanche depositin 30 m wide search strips.

Pay attention to the lateral distance to the edge of the avalanche. Thisdistance should not exceed 15 m.

When a transceiver picks up the firstsignal it immediately starts with fine-search.

The other searchers should continuewith the planned search path and thesearch strips as described.

PINPOINT SEARCH:

The triple antennaesystem of the d3 facili-tates a precise pinpointsearch.

During the pinpointsearch at a distance of 2 - 0 m the digital direc-tion arrows are swit-ched off. This indicatesto the searcher that he isvery close (approximately2 m) to the victim. Now pass the d3 overthe snow pack at adistance of several cm.

IMPORTANT:At this point stop turning the d3.

Pinpoint search is carriedout with the help of thedigital distance readingand the increasing fre-quency of signal tones. The victim is located atthe position of the lowestdisplay (= buried depth).Use the avalanche probeas an orientation aid forrescue with the shoveland shovel laterally awayfrom the probe!

FINESEARCH:

At a distance of appro-ximately 40 m to thetransmit signal the digi-tal distance reading of40 will be displayed(10); the middle searchdirection arrow will beilluminated, indicatingthe direction to follow. The loudspeaker`s acou-stical signal confirms themeasurement results.

To obtain precise locatingresults move the trans-ceiver deliberately, yet, simultaneously, at amoderate speed.

The red LED is illu-minated approx. 5 se-conds after activating thereceiver. If several signalsoverlap, this process cantake up to 20 seconds. Ifa group needs more than5 seconds to switch toreceive mode then thedisplay can be switchedoff by briefly switching thed3 off while in receivemode. This may also benecessary if atmosphericdisturbances cause dis-play interruptions. The red LED switches offif it can be ensured that

no more than one beaconis transmitting in the re-ception area of the d3.The red LED will notswitch off if a transmitteris located within approxi-mately 15 m. If the dis-play should be erasedduring a search then thed3 must also be switchedoff briefly while in thereception mode.• After locating the first

victim, helpers rescuethe person.

• To find additional signalsthe searcher moves insuccessive circles withradii of 3, 6, and 9meters respectively. Thecentre of each circle isthe point where the firstvictim was found. In thisprocess the searchermust pay close attentionto the display, the LEDsand be alert to any pro-nounced changes. Apronounced change inthe distance readingindicates the signalreception of a secondtransmitter. At this pointfollow the new signal.

• When the searcherreceives no furthersignals in the smallestcircle, he moves to thenext circle.

SPECIAL CASEVICTIMS ARE CLOSE TOGETHER

In searching for multiplesignals, the right andleft search directionarrows can also flash inalternation, in additionto the redLED (12). This infor-mationmeansthat the searcherhas reached anintersection point of two (multiple)signals.

If two signals of appro-ximately the same-strength are received, then the directionarrows flash alternately. The red LED is illumi-nated. In this case thesearcher will decidewhich of the two direc-tions he will follow.

IMPORTANT: Walk the circle com-pletely and hold thed3 on the surface of the snow!

If battery replacementhas been delayed (residual capacity lessthan 10 %) then micro-processor and displaywill be switched offautomatically to con-serve battery power. Instead of the digitalsearch, now analogemergency reception is available until the bat-teries are completelydead.

To determine the stron-gest receive directionthe searcher moves inthis direction. Volumeincreases as the sear-cher gets closer to thevictim.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!Remove the batteries from the avalanche trans-ceiver during the summer months. The ORTOVOXfactory guarantee is invalid by damage due to bat-tery leakage. Never use rechargeable batteries(rechargeable batteries such as Ni-Cd cells).Rechargeable batteries have significantly loweroperating voltage, and thus lower range and limi-ted service life. In addition defective rechargeablebatteries cannot be detected immediately. Oncethey have been recharged they show full batteryvoltage, however they can drop off to 0 afterextremely short service (life threatening hazard!).If you delay changing batteries (capacity <10%),the micro-processor, the distance display, anddirection display will switch off. In such case, approximately only twenty hours of emergencyanalog transmit operation and one hour of emer-gency receive operation are possible.

CHANGING BATTERIESRemove the screw fromthe battery compart-ment (4) and pull thebatteries out of the bat-tery compartment usingthe strap. Insert freshAA batteries and payattention to the correctinsert position of + poleand - pole. Only usebrand name batteries.Cheap batteries can beslightly thinner and/orshorter, which meansthat correct contact ofthe battery poles is notensured.

The carrying case canbe removed from theavalanche transceiverfor cleaning purposes. The wrist strap can bemounted instead of thecarrying case. Use ascrewdriver to loosenthe small wedge in thecentre of the cordanchoring. Pull out thewedge and put it whereit will not get lost.

Remove the pear-sha-ped connecting piecefrom the casing with astrong tug. Instead of the carryingcase the wrist strapcan be attached. Afterattaching the wriststrap put the connecti-on back together andsecure with the wedge.

For safety reasonsORTOVOX recom-mends that you onlyuse the supplied andmounted carrying case.
