Introduction of BOSCO

BOSCO is a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) working in the city of Bangalore

since 1980.

Vision To build a community that will unreservedly care for its children through a preventiveand promotional approach which supports children and activates forces in the societythat favour them. Mission To encourage the young at risk to join the mainstream of society as educated and

productive citizens by partnering with the children in their daily struggle to grow off the

streets.

WHO IS A ‘CHILD’? According to international law, a child means every human being below the age of

18 years.

Child Rights in India: An Introduction

India is a party to the UN declaration on the Rights of the Child 1959. Accordingly,

it adopted a National Policy on Children in 1974. The policy reaffirmed the

constitutional provisions for adequate services to children, both before and after

birth and through the period of growth to ensure their full physical, mental and

social development.

The right to Education: 50% of Indian children aged 6-18 do not go to schoolDropout rates increase alarmingly in class III to V, its 50% for boys, 58% for girls.

The right to Expression: Every child has a right to express himself freely in whichever way he likes. Majority of children however are exploited by their elders andnot allowed to express.

The right to Information: Every child has a right to know his basic rights and his

position in the society.



The right to Health & Care: 58% of India's children below the age of 2 years are

not fully vaccinated. And 24% of these children do not receive any form of

vaccination. Over 60% of children in India are anemic. 95 in every 1000 children

born in India, do not see their fifth birthday. 70 in every 1000 children born in

India, do not see their first birthday.

The right to Name & Nationality:

Every child has a right to identify himself with a nation.

A vast majority of underprivileged children in India are treated like commodities

and exported to other countries as labour or prostitutes

The right to protection from Neglect:

Every child has a right to lead a well protected and secure life away from neglect

Services of Bosco

Home Placement

BOSCO believes that the Child belongs to his/her home and that is where the children

can grow up best. Reinstating the children back in their homes at the earliest afterrehabilitation is the goal that BOSCO pursues with intent.

Tracing Missing Children BOSCO is the nodal agency for the state for the missing child bureau as per the

proceeding of Government of Karnataka. This decision has come with the efforts of

BOSCO in ensuring the implementation of the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care

and Protection) Act 2000 and the corresponding Amendment Act (2006).

Education Most of the children stop their education after their initial schooling. The reason behind

this scenario is that economic instability. BOSCO intends to support these children for

stheir higher education

Vocational Training Vocational training coupled with Non-Formal Education is provided to those childrenabove 14 years of age, who show too much resistance towards formal education. Thevocational training includes welding, carpentry, two-wheeler mechanism, computer

training, tailoring etc.

Job Placement After completing the vocational training, we place these children in different job setting

according to their qualification. This will help them to construct their future

Health Care

Giving better medical service to the children is one of our major concerns. It is ourprimary responsibility to look after the children until they are reintegrated with their

families. We facilitate proper treatment for sick children and also conduct medicalcamps from time to time. Personality Enhancement Personality Enhancement has a vital aspect among our services. Such measures help

to develop positive attitudes in life

1. Calendar booking: On your special occasions like birthdays/anniversary youcould choose to feed 200 children who live in BOSCO’s centers bycontributing Rs. 2000 for a one time meal, choose your dates!

2. Sponsor Food for a child for one year - Rs.10800

Clothing

1. To provide two sets of dresses for a child during a year - Rs. 1000

2. To help us provide bedding, blankets & pillows for 200 children during the year - Rs. 400per child

Open Shelter Maintenance

For Electricity, Water,Housekeeping Maintenance, honorarium to shelter animators - Rs. 19,500per month Education

1. Gift a School accessories & Stationery

o Gift a school bag to a child - Rs. 150 o Gift a pack of school stationeries to a child - Rs. 600

2. Sponsor a child’s uniform – Rs. 500

3. Sponsor Education for a child for one year ( Tuition fee, school fee) - Rs 5500
