Outing in a rowing boat on the Ouvèze River at BédarridesCanoeing on the Rhône river in Avignon

The presence of water in Provence often surprises people. And yetflowing water is a stunning feature in Vaucluse. The emerald spring gushes forth in Fontaine de Vaucluse andbecomes a river which meanders under the trees. Canals refresh theair and water wheels churn the waters in nearby “Little Venice”(L’Isle sur la Sorgue).I can either choose: to embark on a canoe and go down the cool andcalm Sorgue, glide under the green tunnel formed by the planetrees, escorted by a squadron of dragonflies or a tribe of beavers, orat Monteux, I can climb aboard a pedal boat and chill out on thelake with Mont-Ventoux looking down on me.

our selection:

L’ISLE-SUR-LA-SORGUE : also called the “Venice of the Comtat”, withits centre lying within the arms of the Sorgue river. The “partage deseaux” watershed and its picnic area. The nautical jousts and shows, the floating market in the summer. Large provençal market and fleamarket every Sunday.FONTAINE-DE-VAUCLUSE: the source, one of the most powerful inEurope. The artisan paper mill “Vallis Clausa”. The ecomuseum of thesource. Canoe or kayak down the Sorgue river. The santon museum. The

Castles, drawbridges, dungeons, crenelated galleries… in thevillages or in the plains, they stand proud and evoke centuries past. The Château is home to several craftspersons, and on the castle terraces, you’ll find the Conservatory of dye-plants, ranked as“OutstandingGarden” .LOURMARIN: This village ranks among the “Most Beautiful Villages inFrance”, and is home to several art galleries and craft shops. You sometimes get the feeling that the Romans did not conquerProvence, but that Provence won the heart of the Romans. In theRoman theatres, or visiting the once-sumptuous villas, I can justsense the conversations between persons who were there twothousand years ago. In the Middle Ages, the popes also chose to livein this area, for the pleasant lifestyle. I walk through the pages of a history book …

On the Roman side, I like:ORANGE: the Roman Theatre, datingback to the 1st century AD, a Unesco WorldHeritage listed site, the only Roman theatrein Europe to have kept its stage wall. TheTriumphal Arch, also listed. Ask for the Avignon Passion Pass at the Tourism Office. It is free and isfull of ideas for walking tours, city discoveries, and special low prices forthe whole family at the monuments and museums in Avignon andVilleneuve les Avignon.

I cross the river to arrive in Avignon. The panorama is grandiose.I see the famous bridge, the pont d’Avignon from the song, wherepeople danced. The Palace of the Popes stands tall above theramparts which encircle the old city. No wonder the city is rankedas World Heritage for Humanity!

CULTURAL AVIGNON, CITY OF THE POPES

Beautiful clear light and soft colours enfold the Luberon RegionalNature Park. This is the kingdom of drystone architecture – of thebories – the rounded stone sheds scattered throughout thecountryside, and of the Restanques – the walled-in terraced fields,– all the work of ingenious farmers. Perched villages cling to thehilltops, nestle in the hillsides and stand atop rocky spurs, their redtile roofs soaking up the sunshine. Narrow winding streets, craftstudios and shops, small squares refreshed by gurgling fountains, outstanding views over the plains, orchards and vines … there’s something magic in the air. Up high in a hilltop village, I feel very close to the sky!

don’t miss:BONNIEUX: Hilltop village. The Cedar forest. Marked path withinformation signs on the characteristic plant species in the Luberon. TheBakery Museum. The Enclos des Bories – a group of over 20 drystone constructions. LACOSTE: the village and its narrow streets lined with stone houses, winding upwards to the château du Marquis de Sade (private, closed tovisitors). Superb view over Bonnieux, the next perched village. MÉNERBES: The village is ranked “One of the Most Beautiful Villagesin France”. The Corkscrew museum at the Domaine de la Citadelle. When visiting the City of the Popes, I learned that the pontiffsovereigns gave refuge on their land for centuries to Jewishcommunities chased away from the Kingdom of France, but theirtolerance was relative. Avignon, Carpentras, Cavaillon, L’Isle surla Sorghe and Pernes les Fontaines were the headquarters of thisfascinating story of the Pope’s Jews of which many testimonialsremain today…

Imagine the temptations! The town of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue alone hasover 300 permanent antique shops and decorators open at weekendsand on holidays. It therefore comes as no surprise that Isle sur laSorgue, nicknamed the Venice of the Comtat, is the second biggestcentre in France, after Paris, for antiques and collectibles. I go byevery Sunday, part of the crowd enjoying browsing and strollingalong the banks of the Sorgue, where the flea markets have beenheld for over 40 years. This is a rare and beautiful, slightly unusual, journey.

At Isle sur la Sorgue, I like to:

l Browse in the “villages d’antiquaires” and the outdoor fleamarket which takes place every Sunday.

l Stroll on the large Provençal market on Sunday morning, listed“exceptional market” and along the canals.

l Come for the major International Antiques Fairs at Easter and on15 August. These fairs draw hundreds of exhibitors who set up theirwares throughout the town, true caverns of Ali Baba, in addition to thepermanent antique dealers in Isle sur la Sorgue.

l The Notre Dame des Anges baroque collegial, sumptuously decoratedin the 17th century Italian style, a remarkable example of baroquearchitecture. Works by Mignard, Parrocel, Simon…

I can see Mont-Ventoux from everywhere, this Provence giant withits bald head overlooking the landscape and seemingly gazingdown at small stone villages. Wild canyons, mythical mountainswith plentiful wildlife and plants, vast stretches of lavender, goldenfields of einkorn, that is what Provence is all about…

The ochre colours in the earth light up the landscapes in theLuberon, from the village of Roussillon to Gargas, and in Rustrel, where the magnificent “Provencal Colorado” is located. The beauty of the ochre sites comes from the combined effect ofman’s work and nature’s diversity. The old open-sky ochre mines inRoussillon have created landscapes full of unique colour –vermilion, yellow and red. The underground ochre mines inGargas have created cathedral-like galleries. I put on old dark tennis shoes where earth stains won’t matter, andoff I go on the walking trails. I quickly understand where thebeautiful colours on the façades of the homes come from – is thiswhy Provence is said to be so “colourful” ?

the ultimate ochre site:

ROUSSILLON: the village and ochre houses, listed one of the “ mostbeautiful villages in France”, the ochre path, dotted with educationalsigns on geology and the various stages of extraction that apply to ochre. The Conservatoire des Ocres et de la Couleur. In this land, said to be blessed by the gods, Bacchus seems to havedone some good work. The history of vines and that of the Vauclusetend to overlap: first the Greeks, then the Romans and the Popeshave played a key role in the planting and development of thevineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, Côtes du Rhône, AOC Ventouxor AOC Luberon, offering a profusion of scents and aromas. There’s no point listing all the wine cellars as there are simply fartoo many, but if, like me, you get some maps from the tourist officemade by Inter Rhône or if you get the very best addresses and makeyour own tailored itinerary on www.wine-tourism-provence.co.uk,then go and wander through the vineyards, trying things out as yougo along…

In the Vaucluse, being into food is a positive quality. Pâtissiersand confectioners wear a chef’s hat, speak passionately aboutwhat they do and do it well. Lavender honey, roasted almonds, freshly picked fruit for jams, figs, Cavaillon melons, pinkapricots, plump cherries… All of this unbelievable local wealthwith southern accents are enough to make any food lover sing forjoy!

for those with a sweet tooth: Candied fruit by the Apt and Coustellet artisans in Luberon, and thoseby the confectioners of Carpentras Black and white nougats by St Didier nougat makers and the Saultnougat makerBerlingots, the small striped sweets, speciality of CarpentrasDelicate chocolates by artisans fromChâteauneuf du Pape, Isle sur la Sorgue, Vaison-la-Romaine, Gigondas, Avignon andelsewhere…The Papalines d’Avignon, small pinkchocolates filled with Comtat oregano liqueur, sold in many confectioners’ and patisseries shopsin the Vaucluse. Not forgetting the many cakes and treats, alllocal specialities like the Galapian from Apt, theChristine from Carpentras, the Melonnettes or Cigales from Cavaillon, the Soleil from Pernes les Fontaines or the Ventoulet, a travel cake, designed by the Master Pâtissiers of the Vaucluse.

They come in big and small sizes. But size isn’t what matters here;the most important thing - and the hardest - at a Provençal market,is to make a choice. Fruits and vegetables of all colours and flavours, delightfully scented palettes of herbs and plants, fresh or dried, goat’s cheeses in logs, squares or pyramids, olive oils, tapenades, honeys and jams in all kinds of flavours, farmhouse breads, fougasses… Try it all out? Why not, there’s no need to hurry. In Provence, you always know at what time you leave to go to themarket. But there’s no knowing when you’ll come back. Someforms of enjoyment just can’t be explained…
