He rejected it both as a means of accurately modeling human behavior and as an appropriate ethical norm. This lecture will explore the roots of Keynes's aversion to utilitarianism, as well as the consequences of his aversion for his economic modelng. 2) Keynes and the arts Keynes is well known for his involvement in Bloomsbury and for his financial support of the arts. But behind these engagements with the arts lies a deeper acquaintance with art criticism and art
markets, in particular the work of Roger Fry. This lecture will explore how Keynes's ideas about art and art markets influenced his economic theory. 3) To whom does Keynes belong? In the aftermath of the financial crisis in 2008, Keynes once again became a central figure in economic policy debates. It has been his fate over the sixty five years since his death to have his name wax and wane in policy debate. This lecture will explore the legitimacy of the claims by different groups to the mantle of Keynes's name. 4) Keynes and the crisis in social democracy As we enter the second decade of the twenty first century, social democracy is attenuated across the post-industrial democracies. In the face of large scale sovereign debt, the projects of social democracy are threatened in almost all countries. This lecture will explore the degrees to which Keynes is Implicatde in this situation, since Keynesianism and the stimulative effect of government deficits lie at the heart of much reasoning about social democracy and sovereign debt.
