Against the backdrop of Thailandsendless 2011 monsoon rainsand initial flooding, the TCCCwas very fortunate to have beenblessed with a great attendee

turnout and a dry night for this years festivi-ties. In total, 270 guests attended this yearsMaple Leaf Ball and Silent Auction.

As highlighted by Ambassador RonHoffmann, 2011 marks an exciting andforward looking t ime in the Canada -Thailandrelationship. After 50 years of official

diplomatic relations, our countries are ableto celebrate tremendous good will andfriendship and the success of this years ballcertainly validated these close ties.

For 2011, the Maple Leaf Ball was againheld at a TCCC member company venue,that being the Four Season Hotel Bangkok.When a hotel is named the No.1 Hotel inAsia by the readers of Conde Nast Travelerand the No. 1 City Centre Hotel by BusinessTraveller, Asian Wall Street Journal, and Travel& Leisure magazine, you are pretty wellassured your guests are going to have a greattime and they did! The TCCC thanks theFour Season staff for their excellent supportin helping to deliver this critical annual fundraising event.

Upon arrival at the ball, all guests werepromptly registered by the TCCC staff andserved champagne, coffee martinis, wineand mixed drinks as they wondered througha beautifully prepared silent auction. The2011 auction offered a wide array of giftsincluding diamonds, jewelry, luxury hotelstays, vacation packages, dining vouchers,medical exams, oriental rugs and much more.Several noteworthy auction entries were the

We also wish to thank Khun SukanyaRattanavadee for creating the auctions floralarrangements and Daniele & Don Lavoiefor their expert help in setting-up the silentauction displays. The success of the silentauction is always in great hands with thesekey chamber supporters.

After enjoying an hour of cocktails and

champagne in the silent auction area, theguests were directed to ballroom where theevents MC, Mr. Derek van Pelt introduced theChambers President, Mr. John Casella andThe Ambassador of Canada, H. E. Mr. RonHoffmann, who both delivered brief opening

remarks just prior to the playing of the RoyalThai and Canadian national anthems. Wethank Derek van Pelt, Managing Director ofSiam Wheels for serving as this years Masterof Ceremony. He certainly looked right athome in his pilgrim costume while leadingthe evenings numerous activities.

Along with several bottles of greatCanadian wine, the evenings Thanksgivingdinner menu included Yam Som O - pomelosalad with crispy garlic and shallots, pumpkincream soup with curry, toasted almonds,dice roasted pumpkin topped with whippingcream, traditional roasted whole turkeyserved with stuffing, cranberry sauce,braised red cabbage, mashed potatoes,steamed green beans and giblet gravy. Fordessert, guests were treated to traditionalpumpkin pie with whipped cream, fruit cakewith vanilla sauce, milk chocolate & pecan

cheese cake, brown butter creamy applepie, rhubarb-pineapple custard pie, pistachiobrownies and traditional pear & cranberrycobbler served with vanilla sauce and roastedalmonds. Clearly, the Four Seasons served-up one of Bangkoks best meals of the year.

For 2011, we also thank Bistro 33 forits support in handling wine sales, as wellas serving-up an endless supply of BloodyCaesar and shots through the evening.Given that balls guests consumed 23 litersof Clamato juice in just less than 2.5 hours,I would say they really appreciated BazsBloody Caesars.

Another key contributor to the 2011Maple Leaf Ball was Canadas MooseheadBreweries and Kobi Group Inc, run by Torontobusinessman Mr. Kawal Kohli. When Kawaland Moosehead Breweries partnered todonate the Moosehead beer supply to this

years ball, they certainly made many newfriends in Thailand. We thank Mooseheadand Kawal for this wonderful Thanksgivinggift!

The evening was also accentuated withnumerous activities including a trivia game,traditional shot bar, raffle draw, and dancing,as well as a great lucky draw that offered aGrand Prize of two round-trip tickets fromHong Kong to Vancouver via Air Canada.Khun Sukanya Rattanavadee, TCCC Directorand General Manager of Thai Phum Skylights

(GSA for Air Canada) presented the GrandPrize to the lucky winner, Mr. KarnonChartisathian of Deloittes Bangkok office.

The band selection is always an agonizingchallenge for such events, but thanks to theassistance of TCCC Vice President, Mr. AliFancy, we once again delivered live dancemusic that kept the dance froor packed allnight. We also wish to recognize Q-Bar forloaning us DJ Octo who helped supportthis years entertainment schedule. However,the real hit for eighty of the ball's attendeeswas the After Party held by Q Bar at theirnew 2nd floor patio bar. Who said they were

all dressed up with no where to go? Frommidnight on, Q Bar was definitely the placeto be.

Voyageur had a chance to chat withSteve Reale, who has worked with Josephfor over a decade now, and find out moreabout this fascinating company. Steve saysthat Joseph stayed away from the Canadian

diamond market until he could become a siteholder( direct to source of rough diamonds )With the downturn of the Canadian economy,many people walked away from sites andcompanies like Harry Winston were lookingfor prospective site holders. By then, Josephhad emerged as a force in the business andlet it be known that he was willing to opena diamond-cutting facility. The mines werelooking for strong young companies to part-ner with so it was natural that Harry Winstonwould take an interest in JSN. (Harry Winstonas mentioned, owns 40% of the Diavik Mine,the other 60% is owned by Rio Tinto). Joseph

had met Bob Gannicott, Harry WinstonsCEO, years ago when Canadian diamondswere just emerging and he had also built up arelationship with Jim Pounds, Harry WinstonsExecutive Vice-President.

Steve says that Joseph has been inmanufacturing for 25 years now; starting offwith a factory in Toronto. He started makingtrips to Thailand because as it was known as

a Mecca for gemstones, but when Josephrealized the craftsmanship that was availablehere he started moving into the diamondbusiness. His love for Thailand saw him openup a facility here (jewellery manufacturing),and Thailands skilled workers have helpedhim grow his business. When Joseph be-came a site holder, he was able to open hisown diamond-cutting facility, cut and preparehis own diamonds and control his own des-tiny. As Joseph says, Unless you control yourown destiny, the market will shrink on you.

Chiang Mai was a haven for apprenticediamond cutters, and although Joseph wastold that to be competitive in the he wouldhave to cut diamonds in China and India, hesproven that you can cut diamonds in Thailandand be competitive with anyone, anywhere.As JSN participated in big jewellery fairsaround the world like Baselworld it becameobvious that the big retailers were looking tomake direct contact with the manufacturerand JSN looked more like a wholesale divi-sion. So, Joseph set up Utopia and brought

in Mona Chi to head the sales division. Shecomes from the high-end (gem stones).What differentiates Canadian Ice from

other Canadian site holders is Josephsexperience. It is easy to put a stone in abasic mount, but to create a work of art,you need that manufacturing background.And the companys manufacturing divisionin Thailand is a main reason for its rapid risein the market. One of the worlds top jewel-lers recently visited Thailand to work withJosephs development team. You have to bethe best cutters, Steve says, we have 350in Chiang Mai now, we hope to have 500 by

early next year and 2,000 within a couple ofyears.

Summing up, Steve says, People lovethat our diamonds are 100% conflict freeand eco-friendly and finished by some of theworlds best cutters to create a masterpiece.

A couple of teams pulled out and a fewplayers left early because of the floods, but

Bangkok teams take two titlesin Land of Smiles TourneyThe 17th annual Singha Light Landof Smiles ice hockey tournamenttook place at Bangkoks ImperialSamrong arena 26th-29th. Entriesfrom around the world bravedBangkoks floodwaters andhelped maintain this tourneysreputation as one of the mostexciting and fastest-growinghockey tournaments in Asia.

Teams were divided into three divi-sions: International, Recreationaland Asian. Thai-based teams didwell capturing two of the three titlesup for grabs. Countries participat-

ing included Singapore, Taiwan, Canada,China, Kuwait, the UAE, Finland, Germanyand more.

When it was all skated and done, the AbuDhabi Storm defeated defending championTaipei Typhoon 3-1 to grab the InternationalOpen title in a thrilling final. The Bangkok Fly-ing Farangs B team won the RecreationalDivision; led by goalie Lance Parkers threeshut-outs, they won six straight games, shut-ting down the Finnish team Jellonas 6-3 inthe final match in their bracket. The FarangB top line of Devin Keer, Charlie Argue andStephen Sproule was a force to be reckonedwith throughout the tourney.

The Thai Canstar squad defended theirAsian title for the third consecutive yeardefeating arch-rival Hong Kong Hitmen 4-0.The Canstar squad was composed of manyof the Thais won a sliver medal at the Asian

Winter Games earlier this year in Kazakhstan.Particularly impressive was former ECHLdefenseman Likit Andersson and speedstersTewin Thor Chartsuwan and JanthapongMoo Tengsakul.

The Flying Farang A team led by co-captains Todd Switzer and Geoff McIntyrewere 1-1-1 coming out of regulation play;then they beat the Vancouver Devils in thequarter finals to move to a semi-final show-down against nemesis Taipei. The speedierTyphoon jumped out to a 3-0 lead but theFarangs stormed back with two late goals,and almost tied the game in the waning
