    Community Activity

On Saturday, June 18, 2011, the

local Canadian community held itstraditional Canada Day Celebrationon the lawns of Bangkoks historicBritish Club with 350 people inattendance. The British Club isa beautiful venue for this annualevent and you can always counton its professional staff to makeit an enjoyable day.

Upfront, we would like to offer aspecial thank you to this yearssponsors and prize donors fortheir support in ensuring a fun-filled

event. Without the support of these sponsor-ing companies, it would be very difficult tohold a successful Canada Day celebration. Please make sure you honor these sponsor-ing companies with your future business.

Following last years practice, the timingof the Bangkok celebration was pulled aheadfrom the official date of July 1st to allow morefamilies and individuals to participate beforethe start of the local communitys summer

home-leave period. Its worth noting that thispull ahead action also allowed the celebrationto be conducted in dryer conditions versusprior years.

The 144th Canada Day Celebrationmaintained its family picnic feel and offeredsporting events for all ages such as ice-breaker bingo, ball hockey, volley ball, waterballoon toss and tug of war. It was also a funfilled day for the younger kids due the supportprovided by BNH Hospital, Right to Play Thai-land Foundation and the British Club. Kiddyactivities available on the day were the BritishClubs bouncy castle, romping with the BNH

Hospital Mascots and playing the numerousgames supervised by the Right To Play or-ganization including Catch The Dragons Tail,Whistle Basketball, Bullring, The Hoop is Hot,Frozen Beanbag and Hope is in the Air.

In case youre not familiar with RightTo Play, they are an international non-governmental organization (INGO) based inCanada that uses sport and play programsto improve health, develop life skills, and en-courage social and emotional developmentof children and youth in some of the worldsmost disadvantaged communities.

While Right To Play did a great job in look-ing after this years children games, the BNHHospital team always does an outstandingjob in looking after everyones well being onCanada Day. With so many children on-handand so many adults wanting to be kids again,

its reassuring to know that BNH always has

an on-site team and ambulance to meet themedical needs of the attendees. For this years celebration, the guests

were treated to a continuous supply of Ca-nadian wine, ice cold Carlsberg beer, andmixed drinks from 3 strategically placedbars. An iconic feature of any BangkokCanada Day celebration is the toga cladJohn Stevens mixing and pouring a non-stop supply of Classic Bloody Caesars. Itsour understanding that there is a sizeablestore of Clamato juice somewhere in Bang-kok and we sure hope John will teach othershow to put it to good use before next June

British Club delivered great afternoonsnacks for the kids as well as a delicious din-ner buffet that was available at three differentstations. Supporting the British Club kitchenfor this years event was Canadian ChiefBernie Tweedie who helped bring a moreCanadian feel to this years event menu.Bernies menu enhancements included:

BBQ Baked Ham glazed with Maple

Syrup (A little Canada taste to add tothe party...)

Cedar Planked Salmon encrustedwith Dijon Mustard Sauce (Canadian

    Recipe) Maritime Seafood Chowder(Canadian

Recipe) Poutine (Canadian Recipe) Homemade Perogies filled with Cheese

and Potato sauteed in bacon and onions(Canadian Recipe)

Apple Crumble (Canadian Recipe) Butter Tarts (Canadian Recipe) Nanaimo Bars (Canadian Recipe)

Following dinner, a brief birthday cake cut-

ting ceremony was conducted by H. E. Mr.Ron Hoffmann, Ambassador of Canada toThailand, and Mr. John Casella Vice Chairof the Canada Day Committee. While thechildren were excited about the cake, theadults were clearly more interested in theevenings final lucky draw outcomes whichoffered over 50 prizes including gifts andvouchers to a wide array of resorts, hotels, restaurants and tailoring establishment.During this years lucky draw, the Top-10prizes included resort & hotel stays at ClubMed Phuket, Four Seasons Resort ChiangMai, dusitD2-Chiang Mai, Conrad Bangkok,Rabbit Resort Pattaya, Oakwood Apart-ments-Bangkok, Fraser Suites Urbana Sa-thorn and Courtyard by Marriott-Bangkok,
