URBAN NATURE

HELSINKI’S SHORELINE IS ADORNED BY AROUND 100 KILOMETRES OF COAST AND OVER 300 ISLANDS OF WHICH

MANY ARE ACCESSIBLE FOR RECREATIONAL USE. PROXIMITY TO THE SEA OFFERS AN ENDLESS NUMBER OF

OPPORTUNITIES ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER.

Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and a base for the

Archipelago Fleet. Suomenlinna fortress has served in the defence of three realms: Sweden, Russia and

Finland and in 1991 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique monument of military

architecture. Take the ferry from the Market Square and enjoy the splendid views and the ride back in

time!

Vallisaari and Kuninkaansaari are enchanting destinations for outings, next to the Suomenlinna fortress,

just 20 minutes by boat from the Market Square in Helsinki. Fortifications, buildings, and a record-breaking

range of species tell a tale of coexistence between humans and wild nature.

Lonna is an old military island that was opened to the public last year. Enjoy a tasty meal at the restaurant

or enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun set coloring the silhouette of Helsinki.

Pihlajasaari is a former villa island that is now a versatile outdoor recreation area. It still has a few old villas

set amongst rocks, wooded areas, groves and beaches. The island is one of the most popular summer oa-

ses for native Helsinki residents.

ISLAND RESTAURANTS

Idyllic island restaurants are a vital part of Helsinki’s unique restaurant culture. The archipelago of Helsinki provides a beautiful setting for summer dining.

Abattoir Continuously developing, permanently incomplete, better than ready and more than the sum of

its parts – that’s Teurastamo! The former city abattoir is being redeveloped for use by the city’s residents,

and the first new restaurants and shops have already been opened.

Helsinki Sauna Day is an event that opens the doors to the city’s saunas for everyone to enjoy. In fact Hel-

sinki is full of saunas that are often empty and seldom seen by most. What if we did something about this

for just one day and invited everyone over for a sauna? Organised for the next time 29 October 2016.
