Family Camp for Kinship Foster Families of African American Children — An Adaptation and Pilot Study Aimed at Improving Children’s Behavioral Health by

Strengthening Family Functioning

Who can participate?

(a) must be an African American (self-identified) kinship caregiver (kin or fictive kin)

(b) caring for one or more African American children age 5 through 15 from the foster care system for at least one month prior to recruitment,

(c) must speak, write and understand English.

What is this project about?

Family Check Up/Everyday Parenting (FCU/EDP) is a promising intervention that

has yet to be adapted for African American kinship families. FCU/EDP has mod-

erate to large effects on improving parenting practice, reducing child behavior

problems, improving emotional regulation, decreasing child risk for obesity, and

decreasing child substance use and arrests for typically developing children. The

long-term goal of this research is to develop a culturally sensitive FCU/EDP inter-

vention to better meet the needs of African American kinship families, and to im-

prove children’s behavioral health through parenting training for caregivers.

What’s involved?

You will participate in the recruitment interview and ecological family assessment, followed by a feedback ses-

sion.

You will attend Family Camp followed by three urban outdoor community experiences where the EDP Pro-

gram and additional content as determined by your needs will be delivered.

You will participate two assessments before and after attending this program, as well as a focus group meet-

ing to express your feedback of attending this program.
