FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My dear people,

All men of the parish are reminded that this Tuesday we have our monthly meeting of the Men’s Club. We begin with a short social period at 6:30 and the meal begins at 7:00 followed by a meeting. To my knowledge, we do not have a speaker this month, but will, no doubt, be planning for our annual St. Patrick’s Dinner in March. Save the date, please. It’s March 14.

Following up on the success of last year’s Valentine’s Fete, we look forward to the Women’s Club “Night at the Castle”. It is this Friday (Valentine’s Day) and tickets are available through the parish office. So many compliments were received about last year’s event that those who know are definitely looking forward to Friday.

While I don’t claim to be a big fan of professional sports, I did enjoy watching the Super Bowl last Sunday with one exception. It was a good game. But the half-time show (perhaps the first one I’ve watched in years) helped me understand the complaints from previous years. Billed as an iconic event for Americans, the Super Bowl is, in many ways, a sad reflection of our culture. The first thought I had when I saw Jennifer Lopez and the way she was dressed, along with other performers, was something along the lines of: ‘Little wonder some Muslims criticize us as a decadent people.’ When I saw a pole dance, well that reminded me of something one might have seen on “The Sopranos” (not a series that I would recommend). Then, there was the bumping, grinding and pelvic thrusts that don’t really require talent (sort of like their “singing”). Until reading commentary later, I did not understand the use of the Puerto Rican flag. Commentators said the show was meant to celebrate the Puerto Rican people as true Americans. Well, for what it is worth, I think several groups should be indignant about the show. People of Puerto Rican background should object to the degenerate connotations about their culture. Women, too, should be indignant at the degradation of their image. I was going to suggest the #MeToo women should object, but later read that Ms. Lopez identifies as a member of the movement. She should watch her own videos or look into a mirror and examine her conscience about her role in the degradation of women. I confess I did not watch the compete half-time show. I couldn’t and now I understand why parents complain that they can’t even enjoy watching a football game with their children.

Further to my disgust, the Monday Morning CBS news team could not stop gushing and fawning over the “great” half-time” show with Gayle King leading the accolades. The culture of disrespect reigns triumphant in media and in politics. With respect for God, the source of it all, Who maintains all in existence, we grow to respect all people, including ourselves, and we grow in respect for God’s creation. Without respect for God, I see little self-respect or respect for others. Let us pray for our country, our culture, and our Church.

PARISH NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY

Join us for Sunday Scripture study. We meet from 10:30 to 11:20am in the front room of the Sedes Sapientiæ (small white cottage across the street from the church). We will be studying the Acts of the Apostles. Books are available. Any questions, contact Jason Vaughan 843-883-3044.

A NIGHT AT THE CASTLE

It’s not too late to get your tickets for the fabulous evening the Stella Maris Women’s Club has planned for Valentine’s Day, 6:30 – 11:00pm. There will be dancing, good food, drinks, great entertainment by Ronnie Johnson, and a Silent Auction. Tickets are $50 pp, and can be purchased in the parish office during regular hours, or you can request tickets by sending an email message to [email protected] or [email protected].

STELLA MARIS MEN’S CLUB

The Stella Maris Men’s Club will hold their monthly meeting in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, Feb.11th. Social hour begins at 6:30pm, with dinner and club meeting to follow at 7:00pm. All men of the parish are welcome and encouraged to attend.

SEWING SOWERS

The Sewing Sowers, a group of women from Stella Maris/Christ Our King, support the International mission of the Religious Teachers Filippini, headed by Sr. Mary Beth Lloyed, “the running nun,” by sewing garments for orphaned and needy children. If you have fabric which you no longer need suitable for children’s clothes, we’d appreciate your donation of that fabric. Please call Margaret Meys at 843-936-6177 or email [email protected].

JOIN OUR BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY

When members of our parish community suffer a loss, our members step forward to bring food for the family after the funeral service. Each 8 member team supplies side dishes for the chicken and ham dinner for 25-35 or so that the parish supplies. The team captains coordinate the volunteers and deliver the main dishes for the family. Being able to provide relief to a grieving family is a wonderful work of both corporal and spiritual mercy, for the benefit of both parties. Many of our volunteers have served for decades, either as captains or members. As we all age, new folks are needed to carry on this meaningful work. Captains who can pick up the larger orders from Sea Island Harris Teeter are always needed. Team members are usually called on only once or twice a year, as there are ten teams. You can be a part of this very worthwhile effort by contacting Judy Snyder at 843-568-1126 or Mary Jones at 843-478-7825.

FIRST LENTEN SOUP AND SANDWICH EVENING WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 2020

SPONSORED BY THE STELLA MARIS WOMEN’S CLUB

Stations of the Cross will begin at 6:15pm Wednesday, March 4th, followed by a SOUP AND SANDWICH SUPPER in the parish hall. Women of the parish are asked to cater the event. Sandwiches and soups should be brought to the hall before the start of the Stations of the Cross. Please put your name on crock pots, ladles, or any plates you may bring, and pick up your dishes and pots after the meal or the next day. Please, NO DESSERTS. It is Lent. If you wish to include your recipes, we would love to have them.
