about 60 minutes.
To check the standby time
Hold down STANDBY MEMORY or with the rad io turned
off. The p reset stand by time is displayed w hile the bu tton is
pressed.
To change the standby time
Perform Step 4 and after and set the new time.
To cancel the standby function
Press STANDBY MEMORY or with the rad io turned off so
that STANDBY or STANDBY is cleared from the d isplay.
At this time, release button or within a second . Otherw ise,
the unit goes to Step 5 for setting the stand by time again.
Tips
To temporarily cancel the standby function, turn off the radio and slideHOLD in the d irection of the arrow so that - is d isplayed. Thetimer goes back to effect when - is cleared from the d isplay (seePreventing operation errors Hold function, page 32).
Once the standby presets are set, the radio turns on at the preset timeeveryd ay unless the standby function is canceled by clearing
STANDBY or STANDBY . Even when the stand by function iscanceled, the station and time stored in STANDBY MEMORY orare not erased until new settings are overwritten.
If the standby memory is in standby status, it takes effect even w henyou are listening to the rad io. The radio switches to the p reset stand byfrequency at the stand by time.
You can set both STANDBY and to the standby status at thesame time. The rad io turns on at the first standby time to receive thefirst standby frequency, then switches to the second standby frequency
at the second standby time. If both STANDBY and are set to the same standby time, only
STANDBY will operate.

Using the optional externalantennas(With the except ion of Chinese model)For better reception of SW (short wave), MW (med ium wave) and LW(long wave) broadcasts, use the op tional wide range antenna AN-1, AN-102 or SW active antenna AN-LP1.
Installation
Do not place the radio or antenna near fluorescent lighting, televisions, telephones, computers, etc., as this may cause noises to be heard .
Install the external antenna as far away as possible from roads.
For details concerning the external antenna, see the instruction manualsupp lied w ith the antenna.
When using the external antenna, make sure that the telescopicantenna is fully retracted.
Notes
Since it is necessary to select the frequency using the antenna controllerfor SW active antenna AN -LP1, you may not obtain the bestperformance wh en operating the memory scan fun ction of the radiowith AN-LP1 connected.
Do not connect external antennas other than those recommended tothe AM EXT ANT jack. This jack outpu ts DC voltage for antennapower supp ly.
Never touch the wire of the external antenna d uring a thunderstorm.Furthermore, immediately disconnect the AC power adap tor from theradio wh en operating on house current.
Tuning in w ith AN-1/AN-102When tuning in to SW broadcasts
Connect the antenna controller output jack and the AM EXT
ANT (AM external antenna inp ut) jack of the unit with the
connecting cord (sup plied with AN-1/ AN-102).
When tuning in to MW/LW broadcasts
1 Connect the OUTPUT jack of the antenna controllerand the INPUT jack of the antenna coupler with theconnecting cord (connecting cord and antenna coupleris supplied w ith AN -1/ AN-102).

Precautions and maintenance
On placement
Do not leave the un it near heat sources, such as radiators or air
ducts, or in a p lace subject to d irect sunlight, excessive dust,
hu mid ity, rain, mechanical vibration or shock.
Use the unit within a temperature range of 0C to 40C (32F to
104F). If it is used in temperatu res outside th is range, an
irregu lar d isplay (i.e., 88.88) may ap pear. If it is used in
temperatures below this range, the display may change very
slowly. The unit will return to its normal cond ition w hen theun it is used in its recommended temperature range once again.
Reception may be difficult or noisy in vehicles or buildings.
Try listening near a wind ow.
On safety
Operate the unit only on 6 V DC with four R6 (size AA)
batteries.
For AC operation, use the supplied AC pow er adaptor* or the
optional AC power adap tor recommended for this unit. Do not
use any other type of AC power adap tor.
For car battery op eration, use the car battery cord
recomm ended for this unit. Do not use any other type of car
battery cord .
The un it is not disconnected from the AC power source(mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the
unit itself has been turned off.
Disconnect the AC power adaptor from the wall outlet when
the unit is not to be used for a long period of time.
The nam e plate indicating operating voltage, etc., is located at
the rear of the unit.
Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, unplug theunit, and have it checked by qualified personnel before
operating it any further. Make sure that no liquid or foreign
material enters the DC IN 6V jack of the u nit. This may lead to
malfunction of the unit.
When the casing becomes soiled , clean it with a soft dry cloth
damp ened w ith m ild d etergent solution. Never use abrasive
cleansers or chemical solvents, as they m ay mar the casing.
Since a strong magnet is used for the speaker, keep p ersonal
credit card s using magnetic coding or spring-wound watches
away from the un it to prevent them from p ossible damage
caused by the magnet.
If there is lightning and when using the external antenna,
d isconnect the AC p ower ad aptor imm ediately from the w all
outlet, if connected. Never touch the antenna wire when there
is a lightning storm.
Never connect a ground wire to a gas pipe.

Tips on radio w aves
What is SSB (Single Side Band)?
SSB is very popular am ong ham and business radio transmissions, and is comm only used in many am ateur band s because of itssuperiority in signal intelligibility. Its impressive signal intelligibilityis achieved with m inimum interferences when compared to DSB(Double Side Band ) owing to its half band width stru cture.
In general, SSB transmissions employ the USB (Upp er Side Band)mod ulation, while amateur band transmissions below 10 MHzemp loy the LSB (Lower Side Band ) mod ulation.
Conventional radios without a BFO(Beat Frequency Oscillator) circuitcannot receive SSB transmissionssuccessfully. This un it can receiveSSB transm issions successfully withthe bu ilt-in BFO (Beat FrequencyOscillator) circuit.
What is CW (Continuous Wave)?
CW is also popu lar among ham and business rad io transmissions.Unlike other signals, the amplitud e of a carrier is not modulated forCW transmissions. CW transmissions convey information byinterrupting the carrier and use Morse code as a m eans ofcommunication.
This unit can receive CW transmissions successfully w ith the bu ilt-inBFO (Beat Frequ ency Oscillator) circuit as beat sou nd only. To fullycomp rehend the information transm itted by CW transmissions, anunderstanding of the Morse code is prerequisite.
What is synchronous detection?
There are tw o underlying obstacles in optimum AM reception:d istortions du e to fad ing and interferences from ad jacent broadcaststations.
Synchronous detection is effective in solving these obstacles.
Distortions due to fad ing are generally caused by over-mod ulationwhich occurs when a carrier component of the received signal isattenuated along the way. The synchronous detection circuit of thisunit generates a pu re carrier frequency with no level variation whichis ideally synchron ized w ith the original carrier to compensate forthe attenuated carrier component, thus d ramatically reducingdistortion.
Likewise, AM (LW, MW, and SW) broad cast generally emp loys DSB(Double Side Band ) signals for transmissions in w hich the modulatedsignals are transmitted using both the upper and lower side bands
