Awarded as the Best Organizationby the Engineering OrganizationExcellence Awards (EOEA)in 2009, 2011, and 2012, UPKEM carries on its consistenttradition of academic excellenceand holistic development. As itcelebrates its 60th anniversary offoundation this August 2014, UPKEM continues to grow leaders,stimulate young minds, fuelambitions, pursue excellence,and promote professionalism,integrity, and holistic developmentamong its members, the college,and the university.

Halfway through the 20 th century,fourteen pioneering chemicalengineering students shareda vision of service for thestudents and the faculty of thethen established Department ofChemical Engineering. On August26, 1954, UP KEM Engineers wasformally established and, in 2003,the Securities and ExchangeCommission registered UP KEMEngineers as a non-stock, non-protcorporation under the new nameUP Chemical Engineering Society,Incorporated.

In order to involve its membersin large-scale activities, and atthe same time build stronger tiesamong chemical engineering andchemistry students all over MetroManila and Luzon, the organizationbecame an afliate of the PhilippineInstitute of Chemical Engineers Junior Chapter Luzon (PIChE JCL)and the Philippine Association ofChemistry Students (PACS) in 1983and 2007, respectively.

together and have them interactand discuss the roles of chemicalengineers in the different chemicalprocess industries. sNCEC 2012was awarded the Best Academic/ Research Development Project bythe Philippine Institute of ChemicalEngineers Junior Chapter Luzon.

With more than 600 participantsnationwide, sNCEC reachedgreater heights last year. NaChESwas revamped by introducingthe rst Parallel Sessions whereindiscussions and workshops on vesub-topics of the Phenomenon ofCatalysis occurred simultaneously.A new sub-project was alsointroduced that year called thesNCEC Research Grant (ReGrant).This project aims to motivatestudents to continue expanding theresearch and development in theeld of chemical engineering. ThesNCEC 2013 was awarded the BestAcademic/Research DevelopmentProject of a Chapter School by thePhilippine Institute of ChemicalEngineers Junior Chapter Luzon,and Best Academic Related Projectby the Philippine Association ofChemistry Students, Incorporated.

This year, sNCEC continues toinnovate, stimulate more brightminds, and foster knowledgeamong the chemical engineeringstudents nationwide. Now on its5th year, NaChES will explore theeld of energy generation. In thissymposium, Parallel Sessions willtake place wherein discussionsand comprehensive workshopson ve sub-topics geothermal,wind and hydropower, petroleum-based, and coal-powered willoccur simultaneously. At the sametime, the sNCEC ReGrant ThesisColloquium will take place and toculminate the rst day of sNCEC,SCENE will be held in the evening.The newest addition to this yearssNCEC is the Chemical EngineeringCampus Challenge Series whichaims to promote the application andappreciation of the fundamentalcourses in Chemical Engineering inan interactive approach. Teams willmake their way through challengesstationed all over the UP Dilimancampus, completing as many asthey can in a limited amount oftime. To conclude sNCEC, Inter-U,a chemical engineering quiz show,will be held.

The National Chemical EngineeringCongress (NCEC) started in 2010with two sub-projects, the rstNational Chemical EngineeringSymposium (NaChES) and the33rd Inter-University ChemicalEngineering Quiz Show (Inter-U)with topics concerning the roles ofchemical engineers in the futureenvironmental and energy solutions.Attended by around 300 studentsacross Luzon, the launching year ofsNCEC was indeed a success.

In 2011, the NCEC was renamed tosNCEC. Reaching 500 participants,sNCEC became nationwide asparticipants from Visayas andMindanao joined the conference.The topic then was ChemicalEngineering in Biotechnology.

In 2012, Food Engineering wasdiscussed during NaChES.Workshops on making process owdiagrams for food processing weredone to appreciate the paradigmof chemical engineering applied inother elds. During that year, a newsub-project was added to the line-up of sNCEC, the very rst StudentsChemical Engineering NetworkingEvent (SCENE). All online registration forms will require participantsto provide their name, contact number, and an activeemail address in order to complete the registration.

Participants are requested to bring their school ID or current matriculation form during the events foridentication purposes.

For NaChES, participants may register individually oras a group. Group registration is most applicable forparticipants that will register as a group with a minimumof ten (10) members.

Participants who will submit their studies to the sNCECResearch Grant are required to register for NaChES. Ifthe participants have qualied to present their study in

RULES AND MECHANICS

ELIGIBILITY

Any undergraduate student who is in his/ her senior year in college , enrolled in the BSChemical Engineering program , and will undergothesis or research may apply for the sNCECResearch Grant. The number of researchers pertopic will not matter as long as it is permitted bytheir respective universities.

REGISTRATION

1. Students who want to apply for the ResearchGrant must submit all the requirements whichare comprised of the registration form , detailedresearch proposal , visual of the proposal , andsupplementary information sheets .

2. The deadline for all the requirements is onAugust 1, 2014 (Friday) . Submit all requirementsvia http://sncec.upkem.org/registration underReGrant . Please refer to the guidelines providedfor the list of requirements.

The registration will only be deemed valid once allrequirements are submitted on or before August1, 2014 (Friday) and payments are settled on orbefore August 25, 2014 (Monday) .

3. Each member of the research group must paya non-refundable registration fee of PhP 300.00 or PhP 350.00 for early and regular registration,respectively. The fee is inclusive of the NationalChemical Engineering Symposium (NaChES)registration, lunch, and snacks during the event.

4. Contestants are required to bring a school ID orcurrent matriculation form . These will be used forattendance checking on the event.

GENERAL RULES

1. The sNCEC Research Grant is a competitionwhich aims to fund the best researches that willadd innovations and developments in the eld ofChemical Engineering.

2. Any topic that will employ the knowledge onthe core courses of Chemical Engineering thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport will beallowed.

3. The top 10 research proposals will be determinedthrough a screening process. The results of thescreening process will be announced throughemail at least one week before the sNCEC .

Non-qualiers have the option to attend NaChESParallel Sessions or ReGrant Colloquium . Theymust conrm their attendance in either eventby responding to the announcement email onor before September 8, 2014 (Monday) . Failureto respond will deny the individual his/heropportunity to attend NaChES Parallel Sessionsand will automatically grant him/her a slot in theReGrant Colloquium.

4. The top 10 teams will present their researchproposal during the Research Grant Colloquium in the afternoon of the National ChemicalEngineering Symposium on September 13, 2014(Saturday) . The researchers are required toprepare an 8-minute presentation .** Presentersshould be in their smart casual attire .

ABOUT

NaChES started as one of the two sub-events of theStudents National Chemical Engineering Conference(formerly NCEC) in 2010. Now on its 5 th year, NaChESwill explore the eld of energy generation in thePhilippines. The program is divided into two-parts:the morning session and the afternoon session. Themorning session includes talks on the state of energyproduction in the country, as well as the researchand development in the energy sector. During thediscussion, career options for chemical engineers inthe said eld will be presented.

The afternoon session will serve as an appreciationcourse of the different sources of energy, renewableand nonrenewable, used today. Participantsfrom the morning session will be enrolled intove classes divided into two sub-topics. TheRenewable+Alternative (RenAlt) Clause includes theGeothermal, Biomass, and Wind-Hydropower classes.The Fossil Fuel (FF) Clause includes Coal-Poweredand Petroleum-based classes.

Workshops will begin with a challenge for theparticipants to apply their recently-acquiredknowledge and critical thinking. Their works will beassessed by a select group of judges, and the topgroup per workshop will be awarded at the end of thesymposium. Their works will also be uploaded onlinein the ofcial sNCEC page.

ENERGY ENGINEERING 101

Energy engineering is concerned with the productionof energy from a variety of sources, from fossil fuels towater and solar power.

Energy engineers are tasked with the improvementof existing modes of energy generation, by boostingefciency while reducing environmental impact.

They also research for renewable and sustainablemeans of creating energy.

ENERGY FACTS

1. The world has been using oil, natural gas, andcoal as primary energy sources, but the use ofalternative sources (nuclear, hydro, biofuels) hasincreased over the years.

2. According to the Department of Energy, thetop 3 energy sources of the Philippines are oil,geothermal, and coal.

3. Power is harnessed from the wind and owingwater using a turbine, a rotary engine acting onthe uids pressure differences to create energy.

4. Wood, corn, and garbage are now being usedto produce energy. These sources are calledbiomass. Converted to liquid, they producebiofuels.

ELIGIBILITY

The Inter-University Chemical Engineering QuizShow is a team competition. All students who arecurrently enrolled in the BS Chemical Engineeringprogram of their school may form a team of three(3) or four (4) persons (three contestants and onealternate) to represent their school. A maximumof two (2) teams may represent a school in thecompetition.

REGISTRATION

1. The pre-registration period shall end at August25, 2014 . The pre-registration will be deemedvalid once payments are settled on or beforeAugust 25, 2014 (Monday).

2. Teams may change their pre-registered members(contestant and/or alternates) until the last day ofthe pre-registration period. After then, the teamcompositions shall be considered nal.

3. All pre-registered participants are expected tobe at the Inter-U venue from 07:30-08:30 AMon September 14, 2014 for verication of theireligibility. Contestants must bring their respectiveschool ID and/or matriculation forms. They mustbe in school uniform or in smart casual attire.

GENERAL RULES

1. Each contestant is allowed to bring only 1nonprogrammable calculator and their own pens.The contestant shall present his/her calculatorupon registration in the venue. The Inter-Ucommittee shall provide the necessary scratchpapers and answer slates.

2. The Quiz Show consists of two (2) succeedingElimination Phases, a Wildcard Phase, and a FinalPhase. All the Phases will consist of three (3)rounds: the Easy, Average, and Difcult Rounds.The questions will come from the ChemicalEngineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics,and Engineering Science domains. Questionsfrom the General Knowledge domain may begiven in the Final Phase. The breakdowns of thequestions in each phase are as follows:

4. The use of calculators for the questions underMathematics domain is not allowed. A team thatuses calculators for the Mathematics questionswill get zero (0) points for that item and one (1)warning count.

5. The 4 top-scoring teams at the end of eachElimination Phase will proceed to the Final Phase.If there are multiple teams vying for the lastqualied slot, sudden death questions will begiven to break the tie.

6. The next 4 teams at the end of each EliminationPhase will be qualied for the Wildcard Phase.Should there be multiple teams vying for the lastqualied slot, sudden death questions will beasked to the remaining teams until the last slot islled.

The Board of Judges will be composed of facultymembers from the Department of ChemicalEngineering, the Institute of Chemistry, theInstitute of Mathematics, the National Instituteof Physics, and the Department of EngineeringSciences of the University of the PhilippinesDiliman. No judge shall act as a coach of anyparticipating team. The judges decisionsregarding all protests that may be raised duringthe quiz show shall be nal.

CONTEST PROCEDURE

1. The program will ofcially start at 08:30 AM onSeptember 14, 2014. Prior to this, the contestantsand their coaches will have a brieng togetherwith the Inter-U Committee regarding the Rulesand Mechanics. The contest rules shall be readbefore the contest proper for the benet of theaudience.

2. Each elimination phase shall equally consist of atleast nine (9) participating schools. For schoolswith two participating teams, the rst team thatwill be registered during the online registrationwill be assigned to the First Elimination Phase;the next team to be registered will competeduring the Second Elimination Phase. For schoolswith only one team, the Inter-U committee willrandomly assign each team in such a way thatboth Elimination Phases would contain the samenumber of participating teams.

3. Only non-contestants and the coaches of theparticipating schools may be allowed to watchthe Elimination Phases. Teams competing for thesecond elimination phase shall be ushered toa holding area once the rst elimination phase

commences. Teams done with the rst eliminationphase shall also be ushered outside of thecontest venue provided that they are qualied forthe Wildcard or Final Phases. After the eliminationphases, everyone is then allowed to watch theWildcard and Final Phases.

4. A team who fails to appear on-stage after thepresentation of the contestants shall automaticallylose by default.

5. Contestants shall be given a time limit to answerthe questions. Each team will be given a copyof the problem while the Quiz Master is stillreading the problem. Timing will start after thequestion has been read by the Quiz Mastertwice. Contestants may start answering while thequestion is still being read by the Quiz Master.

6. In the event that the answers to the questionsare displayed prematurely, the question inconsideration will be invalidated and the Inter-Ucommittee shall replace the question with a newone under the same domain and phase.

7. Final Answer

a. Each team shall write their answers on theanswer slates provided, and these shallbe submitted to the ushers assigned to theteam at the expiration of every questionstime limit. All nal answers must beencircled or boxed. Answers that are notencircled nor boxed will not be credited.

b. The answers written on the answer slatemay still be changed with a new answer ifthe time limit for the question h as not yetexpired. The new answer will be considerednal once it has been encircled or boxed.

c. Rounding-off of calculated values shouldbe done in the nal answers only, free-oating decimals should be kept during thepreliminary calculations. Unless otherwisestated in the problem, all nal answersshould not be written in scientic notation.The number of signicant gures i n the nalanswer will be stated in the question andthe even-rule of rounding off of numbersmust also be strictly followed. All answersshould have appropriate units.

d. If the required answer is a word or a phrase,correct spelling including capitalizationand punctuation shall be strictly checked.Abbreviations and acronyms shall not beaccepted unless otherwise stated.

8. Violations

a. A team will be given a warning count foreither: using a calculator for a Mathematicsquestion; or failure of the team to submittheir answer slate to their respective usherupon the quiz masters declaration of timeexpiration. After three (3) warnings, theteam shall automatically be disqualied.

b. Coaching (e.g. giving audible or visiblesignals) from the audience will result to theinvalidation of the given question. The QuizCommittee reserves the right to replace thequestion in cases such as this.

c. Cheating, in any form, of any member of ateam will result to his/her teams automaticdisqualication.

9. Tie-breaker

To break ties in the Final Phase, clincherquestions shall be given one at a time. If the tieremains unbroken after three (3) questions, theSudden Death Rule shall apply. The SuddenDeath Rule stipulates that the rst team to give acorrect answer for the question will get the point.

10. Scoring

In all Phases, correct answers will be awardedwith one (1) point for Easy questions, two (2)points for Average questions and three (3) pointsfor Difcult questions.

11. Substitution

The substitution of contestants is permitted onlyafter each round. The Inter-U Committee shouldbe approached regarding the substitution beforethe rst question of the next round is delivered.

PROTESTS

1. Only the contestants shall be allowed to leprotests. If they have protests, they should raisetheir hands and wait for the Quiz Master toacknowledge them.

2. Protests regarding a particular question must bemade before the reading of the next question.Protests regarding a particular question will nolonger be entertained once the Quiz Master hasalready started reading the next question.

3. The judges shall deliberate on all protests. Theirdecision shall be nal.

ELIGIBILITY

Any undergraduate who is enrolled in the BSChemical Engineering program of their schoolmay form a team of four (4) students andparticipate in the race. Only one (1) team mayrepresent a school in the event.

REGISTRATION

1. The registration of the teams will be deemed validonce payments of all team members are settledon or before the last day of registration, August25, 2014 (Monday).

2. Teams may change their registered membersuntil the last day of registration. After then, themembers of the team shall be considered nal.

3. Each member of the team must pay a non-refundable registration fee of PhP 100.00 for bothearly and regular registration. The fee is inclusiveof lunch after the event.

4. Team members are required to bring a school IDor current matriculation form. These will be usedfor attendance checking during the event.

GENERAL RULES

1. Challenges shall be completed by the teammembers only.

2. Consulting any reference through any meansis strictly prohibited for the duration of the raceproper.

3. All team members must be present at the stationwhile they are performing the challenges.

4. Each team shall be accompanied by a teamfacilitator. He/She shall serve as a timekeeperand guide as teams make their way around theUniversity of the Philippines Diliman campus. Allfacilitators are not allowed to provide assistance,hints, nor answers to any of the challenges orquestions in the race.

5. Teams are not allowed to ride privatetransportation during the race proper.

The House Printers Corporation was conceived in 1969as a simple proprietorship company with one unit ofMinerva letterpress machine, one unit of manual cutter,5 sets of letterpress fonts, one operator for Minervaand a lot of heart and optimism. Initially the plant waslocated in the dirty kitchen of the owners residence andthe raw materials were stored in the garage.

The rst job of this printing shop was the tickets of amini-bus company which operate from Taytay-Divisoria.Then came jobs from the alma mater of the owners.Through hard work and determination,there werealways ample jobs for the presses and the necessityto expand was always present. First an AutomaticLetterpress machine (V-50) was acquired, then anotherMinerva was added.

After 2 years of operations, the need to branch out tooffset printing was always considered but due to thefact that the capital requirements of setting up a newoffset machine was stiff, the company decided to tradein one of the Minerva Letterpress machine and boughta secondhand Harris Offset machine. Although it tooka lot of headaches to operate the machine, it gave thecompany an insight towards offset technology andfurthermore, the company was obliged to apply for a3-phase electrical supply from Meralco.

Further expansion of clientele base was initiatedwith the advent and operation of the old offset anddecision was reached after a lot of deliberation topurchase a major machine for the company. The factthat the nancial base of the company was still weak, aHeidelberg KSBA was negotiated from PHILPRINT andwas delivered in 1973.

In 1973 the company was incorporated and the rstreal step toward full offset press operations wasinitiated using brand new machineries. The rstacquisition towards this direction was the trade in of theHeidelberg KSBA for a Heidelberg KORD. Later anotherHeidelberg GTO was purchased trading in the V-50.This Heidelberg GTO was later traded in for anotherHeidelberg KORD.

During this time of expansion, we started to cater ourservices to the top corporations that up to the presentstill are part of our operations. The marketing strategywas to get one client who are leaders in their line ofbusiness such as Dutch Boy for paints, RFM for our,SMC-Magnolia for ice cream, Purefoods for cannedfood products, Levis for garments, Nestle for theirpromotional items, etc.

Before the decline of our economy, our company wasable to change most of the previous equipment to 2color offset machineries and these gave us ampleleverage to weather the economic crisis that grippedour nation.

Today, THE HOUSE PRINTERS CORPORATION iswell-known for its quality and reliability. This standardwas further enhanced by continuous training of its staff,supported by the latest Heidelberg offset machinesfrom pre-press to post press.
