Under the auspices of HE Mr. Abdul Rahim Murad, the School of Arts and Sciences held its second Arts and Science Fair on April 26, 2014.A tota l of 36 schools, educationa l centers, and civil institutions from the Bekaa area partic ipated in this m ajor educationa l event.
The opening cerem ony was a tte nde d by the Educational Supervisor of "Al G had Al A fdal Institutions", Dr. Youssef Smaili, Provost of the Lebanese International University, Dr. Ali Tarabay, Administrative Director, Mr. Bassem Hazimeh, A cade m ic Director, Dr. Ahm ad Faraj, and facu lty members in addition to school principals and hundreds of students.In his speech, Dr. Sami El-Khatib, Assistant Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences has pointed out how the science fair has expanded in just one year to becom e one of the m ajor educationa l events in the area. He then a dd e d tha t Bekaa has always been a fertile ground for growth a t all levels: the natural and human.Going through numbers, Dr. El-Khatib showed how the num ber of projects jum ped from 93 to 216 projects in just one year. These projects represented all school cycles and all scientific disciplines in the curriculum. Such a w ide participation, accord ing to Dr. El-Khatib, would definitely grant students the opportunity to integrate their scientific and intellectual skills a long with the social and cultural ones.
Following Dr. El-Khatib’s speech, LIU president Mr. Abdul Rahim Murad praised the collective effort exerted by instructors, staff members, workers and students to make the event a m ajor success. Mr. Murad then announced a num ber of scholarships tha t will go annually to participating schools in the science fair. He ended his speech by stressing LIU's policy of continuously serving and developing education in the Bekaa area and the country as a whole.
A fter Mr. Murad's speech, the aud ience w a tch e d a docum entary about the contributions of A rab scientists and scholars throughout history. The docum entary, prepared and p roduced by Com m unication Arts students in Bekaa Campus, praised the achievem ents of some of the major intellectual figures in our A rab Islamic history.
Later, A cadem ic Director, Dr. Ahm ad Faraj stressed the value of building confidence in our students. Dr. Faraj contributed our success a t LIU to the belief in our students' potentials. He retorted saying tha t building a bette r future starts with investing in our current students through such creative activities as the science fair.
A fter the opening cerem ony, LIU president, Mr. Abdul Rahim Murad officially opened the fair. Mr. Murad toured the fair along with the honorary guests stopping a t each school's station. He praised the high effort exerted by both students and supervising teachers from the different schools.
By the end of the honorary guests' tour, the judging process started.A team of 70 judges from different schools and branches a t LIU started the evaluation process. The team of judges was form ed in collaboration with Dr. Tarek Harb, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The judges through their utmost professionalism tried to ensure a high level of credibility in their evaluation using the pre-established criteria.
A t the same time, students' art pieces - paintings and photographs - were exhibited in the Art Fair which was under the theme: Lebanese Heritage and Traditional Life. The art pieces were judged by a specialized com m ittee headed by Mr. AmirSalame, Chairperson of Arts and Design Departm ent. ^
Winners of science projects and art projects were announced during the closing ceremony.All partic ipating students received certificates of partic ipation while winning students received valuable prizes.

I. LIU Science Fair Objectives
Our main objective at the Lebanese International University (LIU) is to promote students' creativity, critical thinking and research skills. To achieve such an academic and intellectual objective, we at LIU have launched this annual science fair in April 2013. The First annual Science Fair turned out to be a major success. We are looking forward to an equally successful event for the second time around in April 2014. Participation in the fair will provide your students with a unique educational and cultural experience.

III. Participants
All students from both private and public schools in the Bekaa District and Hasbaya Region are encouraged to participate:
> Students from the following school cycles are eligible to participate o KGo Elementary o Intermediate o Secondary
> Participating students should work in teams of two to four members maximum (groups of more than 4 students are not accepted).
> Each student can participate in only two different projects under two different categories (eg. a research project and an invention project or a demonstration project)

IV. School Participation
> Your school may subm it up to 10 projects w ith m axim um one pro ject per category fo r
each cycle.
> The school is encouraged to send w ith th e pa rtic ip a ting students, one supervising teacher
fro m each pa rtic ip a ting cycle.
> Each school should pay a non-re fundab le 100,000 L.L. pa rtic ip a tion fee upon registering
th e ir projects.

VI.1. Research-Based Projects
These projects are usually based on a novel question o r an area o f inqu iry th a t th e students
are in terested in. S tudents w o rk in g on such projects should show how th e y sought th e
answers to th e ir questions and th e n reveal th e ir fin d in g s .
An exam ple on such a p ro jec t is s tudents investiga ting w hich o f th e ba tte ry brands available in
th e m arket provides th e m ost energy and lasts longer.
VI.2.Demonstration Model Projects
These projects are usually representa tiona l in na ture . S tudents w o rk in g on such projects
should design a representa tiona l m odel (can be very s im ple o r very sophistica ted) th a t best
explains a specific concept o r princip le under any o f th e broad science categories.
An exam ple on such a p ro ject is an e lectron ic m odel th a t shows how meiosis and m itosis take
place.
VI.3. Invention Projects
These projects are usually very creative in na ture . S tudents w ork ing on such projects should
com e up w ith a w ho le new idea fo r an inven tion o r th e actual inven tion itself. S tudents
choosing such projects should be able to dem onstra te how th e ir inven tion w ou ld w o rk and
w hom it w ou ld serve. An exam ple on such projects is creating special sensitive shoes fo r th e
blind.
