Few remember that, in the early seventies, Marguerite Duras, published a children’s album. Ah ! Ernesto is the story of a young boy who refuses to go to school because at school he is taught « things that he doesn’t know ». Ernesto’s parents decide to go see the teacher to tell him about Ernesto’s decision. What follows is a rambling exchange which asks essential questions about the nature of knowledge and teaching, questions that are still as relevant today. 2014 is Marguerite Duras’s centena-ry year, so the timing was perfect to republish this work. Katy Couprie’s illustrations (author of the Dictionnaire fou du corps, (Bologna Ragazzi Award) offer Duras’s long forgotten work a beautiful second life.

In this republication of Être publishers’ original work, the tale of Beauty and the Beast tale is here recreated in the original language of Madame Leprince de Beaumont with all its olde worlde magic. Nicole Claveloux’s visual world of-fers a delightful setting for the work : the delicate, detailed images offer sublime yet sometimes terrifying portraits that focus on the poetry and cruelty of the story. This tradi-tional-styled book with its canvas spine, black and white silver-enhanced engravings and its illuminated dropped initials, is beyond doubt a timeless classic.

She follows her grandmother’s fingers as they wend their way across the fabric and listens to her hum a song in a language she doesn’t recognize. « What is that song ? » she asks herself. Marie-Lou knows that her grandmother is hiding a secret, and for her birthday she asks her to reveal it. Her grandmother agrees to divulge it in her own way and embroiders a doll’s dress. The little girl discovers her family’s secret and learns at last where she has come from. The illustrator of L’Oiseau Arlequin and Le Cavalier bleu leads us through the personal world of a little girl, a world where threads and fabrics mingle with thoughts and memories and where images of the past echo those of the present. For the secret in question has been quietly hidden throughout the pages.

Outis is the name that Ulysses gave himself to escape the Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey. It is also the name of the hero in this modern Odyssey, recreated and corrected by Jean Lecointre. Will Outis get to Athens station in time to meet his wife and son ? First he has to sail the Styx, avoid the bewit-ching Sirens, escape from the nymph Calypso’s island, take part in a barbecue organized by the Cyclops, so it is highly unlikely Outis be able to belie his reputation as an eternal late arriver. We also see Heracles cause traffic jams because the Hydra is decapitating people on the motorway, as well as centaurs fighting in bars. With this highly colorful twist on the Odyssey tale, the author leads his readers once more into a wonderful madcap world.

L’acrobate sort tout entière de son cocon, elle fait un demi-tour dans l’air, tombe, s’arrête si près du sol… remonte. Enfin, suspendue par la cheville, tête en bas, ciel inversé, l’acrobate ouvre grand les bras et embrasse le monde pendant que la chanson enfle et déborde. Les applaudissements noient la musique. Mamilona a les yeux pleins de larmes ; Marie-Lou n’ose plus parler du secret.

Tout redevient noir. Seul un trait de lumière baigne une sorte de cocon, une boule de tissu suspendue tout en haut du chapiteau. Le cocon bouge, il frémit.

Une main en sort, puis un pied. Trois notes de musique, le cocon s’ouvre… Il s’épanouit en une large bande de tissu blanc qui tombe jusqu’au sol pendant qu’éclatent les mots d’une chanson que Marie-Lou connaît bien.

Je n’aime pas les gens qui sont dans cette maison. Ils sentent mauvais. On dirait qu’ils ont trempé dans l’eau du nettoyage. Sauf le petit homme qui m’appelle « mon frère ». Il entre dans la chambre quand je suis tout seul. Il regarde si personne ne surveille et il me donne des bonbons mous. Celle qui ne l’aime pas, c’est la méchante femme avec la robe bleue. Elle m’embête toujours. Elle m’apprend à faire des tours comme si j’étais son chien. Elle me donne des cubes que je dois mettre dans des trous. Ou alors elle allume l’écran et je dois aller vite pour ranger des images. Tout le temps elle dit des mots que je ne comprends pas. Je suis obligé d’être obéissant avec elle. Si je ne veux pas, elle me parle avec une figure sévère. Si je fais ce qu’elle dit, elle me donne du goûter. Quelquefois, l’homme triste vient avec elle. La méchante femme me fait ranger les cubes devant lui et il a l’air content. Il me passe la main sur la tête et il s’en va. L’homme triste a une drôle de figure quand il me regarde. On dirait qu’il attend quelque chose mais je ne sais pas quoi. L’homme triste habite dans la maison avec la femme poupée. Elle, je ne la vois presque jamais. Elle a une voix d’oiseau, une odeur de fleur en plastique, et une figure peinte de toutes les couleurs. Elle dit : « Dimitri… Dimitri… » comme si elle cherchait à se rappeler mon nom. Après elle dit : « Tu es trop trop chou, mon choupinou », et elle se dépêche de sortir de ma chambre. Ensuite je pleure pour que quelqu’un me rende mon chiffon.

L’homme triste et la femme poupée habitent tout le reste de la maison. Quelquefois la méchante femme me met une cravate qui me serre le cou et elle m’emmène dans leurs pièces. Elles sont remplies de choses dures, un peu comme ma chambre. Il y a des écrans partout, des petits et même des grands, et aussi des affaires effrayantes posées sur les tables ou accrochées sur les murs, comme des têtes de mort faites avec des pierres brillantes ou des statues au ventre ouvert. L’homme triste et la femme poupée me montrent à des gens qui leur ressemblent, mêmes habits, même figure. Tout le monde crie : « Dimitri… Dimitri… il sera dans la finance… » Pourquoi j’irais dans la finance ? Je ne sais pas comment c’est, là-bas.
