Carpooling from home to
schools and vice versa has
always been a problem for
parents because they are
concerned with their child
getting home safely as well as
on time. There are many risks
and dangers with sending your
child home with another
individual. So, how exactly do
we eliminate these risks and
dangers and proceed forward
with safety precautions?
P U R P O S E
This is where PikMyKid comes in. For the
2018-2019 Partnership with Business Project,
Middleton High School partners with the
business PikMyKid, a business that is
dedicated to improving schools dismissal
systems and making sure that students are
safely escorted from their home to school
and back.
The PikMyKid team will meet with Mr. Pat
Bhava regularly in order to promote safety in
the transition from home to school and
upgrade the school's dismissal systems. The
PikMyKid app is designed in such a way
where there are many tools to use such as a
panic button, parent messenger, tip line, and
Kognition: a partner of PikMyKid working on
upgrading school cameras to identify any
threats and weapons. Project PikMyKid’s
purpose is to promote PikMyKid in order to
increase school safety.

Choosing the right business would be the most important partof the project. The team was looking for a business that would notonly help them face issues in their school but also expand toother schools. Through this, our planning phase was initiated.

In a search for a business topartner with, Middleton FBLAwanted to partner with a businessthat would help solve a problemthat is seen in not only in our schoolbut also our community. We spentsome time to think about thebiggest issue in our school. Then, ithit us. Every day students spendhours standing in the car linewaiting for their parents, and theadministration has to run back andforth to moderate dismissal.Teachers spend hours of their timetrying to handle the uncontrollablemess of the car line and bus linewhen they would rather spend theirtime developing lesson plans. Evenwith the teacher's assistance, theschool dismissal is a long and tiringprocess. Parents often have to waitfor hours in the car line andstudents often reach home late. Then, the Partnership with Businessteam came up with a perfect issueto face: the Dismissal Fiasco.
There were not many solutionsto this problem, but then camePikMyKid. Founded by parent,Saravana (Pat) Bhava, PikMyKid is asafe and reliable solution to thedismissal problem. Incorporatingtoday's technology into our schools,PikMyKid makes school dismissal aquick and efficient process. Startingas a local Tampa business,PikMyKid has grown to be aninternational phenomenon withhundreds of schools around theglobe. PikMyKid was such a strong forcethat elevated schools dismissalsystems to be above and beyondevery expectation, even the FloridaDepartment of Transportationendorsed PikMyKid and agreed topay for the first year for any schoolusing the app. With many schools serving asexemplary testimonials, MiddletonFBLA reached out to PikMyKidlooking for a partnership. ThePartnership with Business teamagreed to partner with PikMyKid byassisting in getting schools to usethe app.

Now that the partnership hasbeen made, the Partnership with Business team had to work ongetting Middleton on board withusing PikMyKid. PikMyKid's mostused technique was to go toschools and directly pitch theproduct. So, we decided to do that.We approached the administrationteam, including our principal Dr.Moore and our assistant principalMs. Burton, and pitched the app. Atfirst, they denied the app, becausethey didn't truly understand thecapabilities of the app and how itcould be applied to the dismissalsystem. Then, we had to find a way todescribe the effect PikMyKid had onschools, so what we did was createan Instagram with a video thatincludes a testimonial from multipleschools and a post that has adescription of the app. This was anefficient way to spread the wordabout PikMyKid. Through consistentposts and asking students andFBLA members to talk to theirparents about PikMyKid, within afew weeks, parents were asking theadministration about PikMyKid andif Middleton could get it.
After creating the Instagramaccount, we approachedadministration again, except thistime they were already beingpressured by parents about gettingPikMyKid. So, after showingadministration a few videos oftestimonials and demonstrations ofhow PikMyKid can be used, theywere eager to implement thePikMyKid system. We then invited the PikMyKidteam over to help do a live demofor the parents and administration.Within weeks, PikMyKid is fullyintegrated into Middleton'sDismissal System.

Throughout the course of thisproject, there were many peopleand events which had benefits thatheavily contributed to the overallgoals of this project. Whether it wasjust a tip to help us or presentingthe idea in front of the countyofficials, every person and eventwas beneficial and is greatlyappreciated. These benefitsextended past us and werebeneficial to our partner andimpacted schools. Mr. Pat Bhava and ChitraKanagaraj, the CEOs of PikMyKid,were very helpful and supportivefrom start to end. Throughout thisjourney, not only did they partnerwith us and act as CEOs, but theywere mentors, teaching us aboutadvertising skills, business andmarketing strategies, and publicspeaking skills. They alsoinfluenced us to look closer intoaspects of school safety, but theyhelped us with other life skills suchas advertising, public speaking, andlooking at things from allviewpoints, making us open-minded. There were many learningopportunities such as learning fromour mistakes in order to perfectourselves for similar futuresituations. The benefits of PikMyKidwere also present. PikMyKidexpanded their range from Georgiaand Tulsa to Tampa and the systemwas implemented into additionalschools.
The school administration and staffmembers were encouraging of ourpresentations and gave us tips andpointers on how to improve ourpresentation skills. Middletonprincipal, Dr. Moore, was especiallyhelpful since she would spendhours and hours with us in order toperfect our presentations beforeadvertising the business to schools. This was also benefitting to ourschool administration since theyfound PikMyKid to be beneficial andimplemented it into their ownschool system. Mr. Akinrefon andthe Middleton FBLA membersplayed a huge role in giving usbenefits. They helped us organizedates and events to learn about theadvertising and presenting processand gain publicity. We also receivedmany donations from memberswho were very helpful to fund ourtransportation and equipmentneeded for our project goals to befulfilled.

At the beginning of this report, we stated 8goals which would help both FBLA membersand our business partner. As we come to aconclusion in this project, here is how thefollowing goals have been fulfilled:
Goal 1: Enhance members advertisingand presenting abilities. This goal wasachieved by presenting our idea tomany schools in order to get moreexperience in the advertising andmarketing aspects of a business.Goal 2: Learn research strategies thatmay be useful in the workplace. Thisgoal was accomplished throughlistening to Pat Bhava's advice on howto effectively present your idea in frontof others. We went to his office andhad discussions on different aspects ofpublic speaking and how to effectivelycommunicate with other people.Goal 3: Engage in social medianetworking to help grow the business. This goal was established by making asocial media account on Instagram. We titled the account name“pikmykidfbla” and all Middleton FBLAmembers and additional peopleinterested in the business followed theaccount in order to learn more aboutthe app and how it works.Goal 4: Provide group members withexperience and career development. This goal was completed by actuallyimplementing the app into multipleschools. Presenting the idea in front ofso many school boards helped us toget better each time we presentedand gain a lot of experience.
Goal 5: Expand the range ofPikMyKid. This goal was establishedby implementing the app intonumerous schools which expandedthe worldwide range to Tampa.Goal 6: Improve app through workingwith more schools. This goal wasaccomplished by listening to theschool administration’s feedbackafter each presentation. The app wasmodified in order to better certainfeatures to increase the number ofschools that use this app. Goal 7: Progress in the use oftechnology in schools to increasesafety measures. Through acquiringschools and integrating PikMyKid intothem, they are elevating the school'sinteraction with technology whilepromoting and ensuring safety. Goal 8: To help teachers dedicatemore time to lessons and serve astestimonials, rather than handle thecarline. By automating the dismissalsystem, the teachers now have timeto focus on their lessons and serve astestimonials for PikMyKid to helpthem deploy in more schools.

This Partnership with a Business was very successful in terms of helping schools allaround Hillsborough County, increasing the publicity and effectiveness of PikMyKid, andallowing students to be transported from home to school and back in a safer, faster way.
Each and every member of Middletons FBLA was valuable and contributed toaccomplishing this goal. Without all of our sponsors, parents, members, advisers, and
teachers, this would not have been possible.
