From the Board Chairpersonand the President

A s a child, many ofus may recall the

wonderful feelingof freshly prepared

soil beneath bare feet. Welearned early the significance ofseedtime as we watched thecareful preparation of the soil forplanting. At the same time, wesoon learned also how depen-dent farmers and gardeners areon God for a good growingseason. Plants need sunshine, rain and protection from storms.

The Biblical theme for thisannual report is from I Corinthians3:7, So neither the one whoplants nor the one who waters isanything, but it is God who makesthings grow.

In like manner, as we havewatched the constructionprogress of our new health centerthis past year, we recognize ourfull dependence on God for Hisblessing on our best-laid plans, whether they be for buildings, programs or services. In carefulplanning and in faith, we haveplanted seeds. This new centerwill provide a wonderful oppor-tunity to improve both thequality of life for our residentsand the working environment forour caring staff.

Planting seeds and strategicplanning go hand in hand. InNovember, the Board took actionto approve the new plan, outlin-ing strategic imperatives to guideus into the next few years. Wehave restated our Vision asLeaders in Serving, recognizingthat each of us can be a leader inserving as we use the gifts God

has given us in service to others. The towel and basin symbol withour name is witness to our beingfollowers of Jesus Christ who leadthrough the example of serving. This planning process was aunique opportunity to engageboard, staff, residents as well asmembers of the larger community,in planting seeds for the future.

This has also been a year ofchange in leadership on severallevels. We bade a grateful fare-well to Eva Bering who resignedas Vice President of ClinicalServices. While her position hasnot yet been filled, temporaryreassignment of leadership hasbeen arranged until a replace-ment is found. Ethel Caldwell, asthe Healthcare Administrator, and Stephanie Hoffman as theDirector of Nursing are givingleadership to this area.

In many ways this has beenanother very good year, but notwithout challenges. Budgetpreparations reminded us of theneed for careful planning andplanting as we operate withinthe economic pressures facing allorganizations like LandisHomes. We are grateful for acompetent team of staff whotake seriously the value ofstewardship of resources as welook to the future.

This was also an unusual year ofawards. Martha Charles, residentof Birch, was awarded Volunteerof the Year and Assisted Livingemployee, Norma Miller, wasrecognized as Caregiver of theYear by our state association,PANPHA. We were blessed with

high approval from both our staffand residents on satisfactionsurveys. Also, of very particularnote was Landis Homes beinghonored with a #1 ranking byBest Places to Work in PA 2002.This is a testament to the out-standing teamwork effort of boardand staff to create a very specialwork place.

In the counsel of Isaiah 26:12,we should be grateful to God forall that has been accomplished. We continue to be excited aboutthe ministry of Landis Homes aswe find new ways and opportuni-ties to be involved as Leaders inServing.

Guiding ValuesRare is the day that passes that we dont feel both

humbled and inspired by the spirit of generous givingthat flows through Landis Homes. Our new Develop-ment Director John Buckwalter put his finger on itwhen he mentioned how the talents and efforts ofresidents, staff and volunteers all combine into onebeautiful whole. The staffs Guiding Values of joy, compassion, creativity, teamwork, integrity, steward-ship and excellence blend with those same values heldby our many volunteers, both resident and non-resident, driving their desire to give.

Reported annual volunteer hours to Landis Homesamounted to 54,060. Add to that the 9,800 hoursgiven to MCC and other sister organizations for a totalof 63,860 hours! The list below names the volunteerswho gave in excess of 25 hours to Landis Homes in the2002 calendar year.

Helen PeiferVolunteer Services Director
