En Guinée, la part de l’agriculture passe de 3,7% à 7,2 % du budget Commodafrica, 2 juin 2015 En Guinée, la campagne agricole 2015/16 vient de démarrer et devrait être prometteuse à l'aune de la prise de conscience de son importance par les autorités qui ont reconnu, de facto, que la Guinée est un "scandale agricole". Par ailleurs, l’Etat a consacré GNF 2 milliards (€ 250 000) à la Haute Guinée, bassin rizicole par excellence, pour remettre en état 50 tracteurs "Universal" de marque roumaine, précieux vestiges des brigades mécanisées des années 70. Et dans la région, l'achèvement annoncé de l’aménagement de 1 000 ha de riz dans la plaine de Koundian, sur financement du budget national de développement, susciterait beaucoup d’engouement de la part des producteurs. Ceci a contribué à une augmentation d'un million d'hectares des superficies en riz entre 2013 et 2014, ce qui a permis d'enregistrer une production de 2 millions de tonnes (Mt) de riz paddy. How bribery, interests killed Liberia's rice farm project Allafrica, June 10, 2015 Liberians across the divide are still wondering why a US$30 million mechanized rice production project which was dubbed a rescue for a country heavily reliant on importation of its staple food rice is at a standstill despite the importation of sophisticated farming machineries which according to the Chairman of the company is worth more than US$22 million. Liberia imports nearly all agricultural products consumed locally and rice is imported from Asia in spite of a fertile land for agriculture.

Niger Agriculture en Afrique : quatre enseignements de l’expérience d’Olam Jeune Afrique, 10 juin 2015 Prenons ici l’exemple de nos activités rizicoles au Niger. Avec ses 10 000 hectares, notre exploitation commerciale constitue le noyau central du dispositif. Nous procurons aux agriculteurs les intrants agricoles, l’accès au microcrédit et les savoir-faire nécessaires, puis nous achetons au prix du marché le riz qu’ils cultivent, et qui vient s’ajouter à notre propre production. À l’heure actuelle, ce dispositif concerne plus de 3 000 petits exploitants. Par notre engagement renforcé dans ce modèle d’extension, nous prévoyons que leur nombre devrait dépasser les 16 000 d’ici à 2018. Nigeria BOI boss commends Olam's investment in local rice production Allafrica, June 30, 2015 The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Bank of Industry, Rasheed Olaoluwa has commended conglomerates such as Olam Nigeria to the development of the rice industry in Nigeria. Speaking during the just-ended one-day Rice Fair in Kano at which he was the special guest, Olaoluwa also commended the organizers even as he observed that "the quality of the fair is remarkable, given that the local rice industry is yet at a developmental stage.

Reserves depletion - CBN may bar rice importers from accessing forex Allafrica, June 21, 2015 There are indications that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may stop granting traders access to foreign exchange for the importation of rice in order to enable local production of the staple food to thrive. The decision is expected to reduce further depletion of the nation's foreign reserves, which stood at $29.008 billion as at June 18, 2015, after falling from $29.819 billion in the corresponding date last month.

Towards strenghtening Nigeria's rice value chain Allafrica, June 9, 2015 The signals from Nigerian farmers, rice processors and some investors in the rice sector are disturbing. Some lament that large imports of finished packaged rice imported largely by Indian merchants and traders from India and Thailand, have been dumped on the Nigerian rice market. This, they say, has led to a major glut in the local rice market resulting to the collapse of prices.
