JACQUES LACOMBE CHEF D’ORCHESTRE / CONDUCTOR

Directeur musical et artistique de l’Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse, Jacques Lacombe fut précédemment chef d’orchestre principal de l’Opéra de Bonn en Allemagne, de 2016 à 2018 et directeur musical de l’Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières, de 2006 à 2018. De 2010 à 2016, il fut directeur musical du New Jersey Symphony Orchestra et de 2002 à 2006, premier chef invité de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal après avoir occupé les fonctions de directeur musical de la Philharmonie de Lorraine, à Metz en France. Le New York Times le qualifia de chef « talentueux et ambitieux » dont la carrière sur la scène internationale a été propulsée grâce à son intégrité artistique et à sa complicité avec les musiciens et les orchestres qu’il dirige.

En juillet 2016, Lacombe a de nouveau eu l’honneur de diriger les concerts d‘ouverture du prestigieux Tanglewood Music Festival avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Boston qu’il retrouvait pour une troisième année consécutive. Par ailleurs, parmi ses récents faits saillants, on compte ses débuts remarqués avec l’Orchestre National de France au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées à Paris dans une version concert de Werther de Massenet avec Joyce DiDonato et Juan Diego Flórez. Il a également fait ses débuts au Festival Internacional de Ópera Alejandro Granda à Lima, au Pérou, ainsi qu’avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Taïwan et les orchestres symphoniques de Dallas, Nancy, Omaha et San Antonio. À l’Opéra de Bonn, il dirigea de nouvelles productions de Holofernes de Reznicek, La bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor ainsi que Peter Grimes avec dans le rôle titre José Cura qui signa également la mise en scène.

Music and Artistic Director of the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse in France, Jacques Lacombe has previously been Principal Conductor of the Bonn Opera in Germany from 2016 to 2018 and Music Director of the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières from 2006 to 2018. From 2010 to 2016 he was Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and from 2002 to 2006, Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal after serving as Music Director of the Philharmonie de Lorraine in Metz, France. Jacques Lacombe is renowned as a “gifted and ambitious” conductor (The New York Times) whose artistic integrity and rapport with musicians and orchestras have propelled him to international stature.

In July 2016, Jacques Lacombe was honoured to return for the third consecutive year as Guest Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Festival opening weekend concerts. Son répertoire de concert comprend le Requiem de Mozart, Un requiem allemand de Brahms, Das klagende Lied de Mahler et des œuvres de Strauss avec les orchestres symphoniques de Melbourne, Sydney et Queensland. Sa discographie est constituée d’un premier disque solo, The Kiss, lancé en 2016, et de l’album Heroines avec l’Australian Chamber Orchestra, paru en 2018.

Né à Montréal, le baryton Étienne Dupuis a étudié l’art vocal à l’Université McGill et fut membre de l’Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal.

Après avoir débuté avec le rôle de Zurga dans Les pêcheurs de perles à l’Opéra allemand de Berlin, il y a incarné ensuite Posa dans Don Carlos, Figaro dans Il barbiere di Siviglia, Germont dans La traviata, Marcello dans La bohème, Silvio dans Pagliacci et le rôle-titre dans Eugène Onéguine. Au cours de la dernière saison, il a fait sa première apparition au Metropolitan Opera en jouant Marcello dans La bohème, puis, à l’Opéra de Paris, il a chanté Don Giovanni dans une nouvelle production d’Ivo van Hove. On peut l’entendre régulièrement à l’Opernhaus de Zurich, à l’Opéra d’État de Bavière, au Royal Opera House du Covent Garden, à l’Opéra de Montréal, à l’Opéra de Paris et au Festival de Glyndebourne.

JIREH Gospel Choir, un ensemble vocal basé à Montréal et dirigé par Carol Bernard, s’est taillé une place enviable dans l’industrie de la musique au Canada et en Europe. Formé d’une quinzaine de chanteurs et d’une équipe de musiciens, les membres de JIREH sillonnent les

routes du Québec, du Canada, des États-Unis jusqu’en France et en Italie pour partager l’amour de la musique gospel ainsi que son énergie contagieuse. Qu’il se produise en plein air ou dans une salle intime, le groupe offre un gospel électrisant qui ne laisse personne indifférent. Des grands classiques aux compositions originales, du negro spiritual au hip-hop, JIREH allie gospel traditionnel et contemporain avec brio. JIREH a été époustouflant au concert de Bobby McFerrin au Festival international de jazz de Montréal à la Maison symphonique. En 2016, le groupe a illuminé la scène principale du Festival international de jazz de Montréal avec son propre spectacle et ont ouvert le concert de Kirk Franklin, gagnant de 12 prix Grammy, au Centre Bell. Il ne lui aura fallu que quelques années pour devenir directrice de la chorale de la petite église qu’elle fréquentait. Toutefois, ce ne sera que de nombreuses années plus tard qu’elle quittera son poste de cadre supérieur au CN pour faire de la musique à temps plein. Bernard est retournée sur les bancs d’école afin de décrocher un baccalauréat en musique de l’Université de Montréal, diplôme qu’elle ajoutera à son baccalauréat en mathématiques et en informatique de l’Université McGill.

Carol Bernard has built an impressive music career as choir director, manager, singer, and producer. She founded JIREH Gospel Choir and the 90-voice Montreal Gospel Choir. In addition, her gospel workshops have been enthusiastically received in Canada and Europe. Born in Montreal to Jamaican parents, Carol was encouraged to start classical piano lessons when she was 8 years old. Not too many years later she started directing the choir at her small church. However, it wouldn’t be until many years later that she would leave a senior management position at CN Rail to pursue music full time. Bernard returned to university and completed a degree in music at the Université de Montréal, adding to her existing degree in mathematics and computer science from McGill University.

Originaire de Montréal, Priscilla Findlay est une chanteuse avec une voix d’or qui se prête à la perfection aux musiques gospel et soul. Ayant fait ses classes sur les bancs de l’Université de Montréal et au Tennessee, l’excellente chanteuse a été soliste pour de nombreuses églises

et groupes musicaux du Québec, dont l’église Nouvelle Vie et la Montréal Gospel Choir. Elle a également été choriste pour des artistes de renom comme Corneille et Jean Jean, ainsi que pour Clark Beckham, avec la Lee University Campus Choir. En 2016, JIREH Gospel Choir, une chorale dont Priscilla est membre, a fait la première partie de Kirk Franklin au Centre Bell de Montréal. La chorale est également remontée sur les planches du Festival international de jazz de Montréal pour une deuxième fois en 2019, cette fois avec Priscilla parmi ses rangs. C’est grâce à sa voix soul profondément magnétique que Priscilla parvient à toucher le coeur d’un nombre croissant de gens d’une manière unique et positive. Born in Montreal, singer Priscilla Findlay possesses a golden voice perfectly suited to both inspirational gospel and soul music. Having received some of her musical training at the Université de Montréal and in Tennessee, the gifted vocalist has since been a soloist for various churches and musical groups in Quebec, including Église Nouvelle Vie and the Montréal Gospel Choir. Over the last few years, she has sung back-up vocals for several renowned artists such as Corneille and Jean Jean, as well as Clark Beckham, during her time with the Lee University Campus Choir. In 2016, JIREH Gospel Choir, of which Priscilla was a member, opened for Kirk Franklin at Montreal’s Bell Centre and, in 2019, the choir returned to the Montreal International Jazz Festival for a second performance, this time with Priscilla in its ranks. The young singer, eager to reach people in a unique and positive way, has been able to count on the power of her soulful voice to open a growing number of doors. Andrew Gray est directeur musical et artistique des Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, directeur artistique de l’Institut choral de Montréal et du chœur de chambre Voces Boreales, et fondateur et directeur du projet choral éducatif Sing Montréal Chante. Né au Royaume-Uni,

Andrew est devenu choriste résident à la cathédrale de Durham, en Angleterre, à l’âge de 7 ans. Il a obtenu un baccalauréat ès arts spécialisé en musique et en art dramatique à l’Université de Birmingham. En 1997, il est devenu membre de l’ensemble a cappella de renommée internationale The Swingle Singers avec lequel il a fait le tour du monde pendant cinq ans. Depuis, il a préparé les chœurs pour de nombreux chefs et compositeurs. Il a également dirigé des ensembles vocaux pour plusieurs artistes populaires. Depuis son arrivée aux Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal en 2016, il a collaboré avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, le Festival Bach de Montréal, Les Grands Ballets, l’Opéra de Montréal, l’École de musique Schulich de l’Université McGill ainsi que Montréal 375e et l’Orchestre Métropolitain, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns.

Andrew Gray is the Musical and Artistic Director of Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, the Artistic Director of the Montreal Choral Institute, conductor of chamber choir Voces Boreales, and founder of the choral education project Sing Montréal Chante. A native of Great Britain, Andrew was a chorister at Durham Cathedral, England from age 7. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in music and drama from the University of Birmingham. In 1997, he joined the internationally renowned a cappella group The Swingle Singers and toured with them for five years. Since then, he has prepared choirs for various conductors and composers. In addition, he has directed vocal groups for popular music artists. Since his arrival at Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal in 2016 he has been involved in collaborations with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Montreal Bach Festival, Les Grands Ballets, Opera Montreal, the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Montreal 375e and the Metropolitan Orchestra, to mention but a few.

LA MAISON SYMPHONIQUE DE MONTRÉAL

La réalisation de la nouvelle résidence de l’OSM a été rendue possible grâce au gouvernement du Québec, qui en assumera également les coûts, dans le cadre d’un partenariat public-privé entre le ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine et Groupe immobilier Ovation, une filiale de SNC-Lavalin. L’acoustique et la scénographie de la salle portent la signature de la firme Artec Consultants Inc., dirigée pour ce projet par Tateo Nakajima. L’architecture a été confiée à un consortium constitué de Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. et Ædifica Architectes, sous la direction de Jack Diamond.

The construction of the OSM’s new home was made possible thanks to the government of Quebec, which also assumed its cost as part of a public-private partnership between the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine and Groupe immobilier Ovation, a subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin. The hall’s acoustics and theatre design bear the signature of the firm Artec Consultants Inc., with this project headed by Tateo Nakajima. Its architecture was entrusted to a consortium consisting of Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. and Ædifica Architects, under the direction of Jack Diamond.

LE GRAND ORGUE

PIERRE-BÉIQUE

L’orgue de la Maison symphonique de Montréal, inauguré le 28 mai 2014, a été réalisé par la maison Casavant pour le compte de l’OSM qui en est le propriétaire, avec la collaboration des architectes Diamond Schmitt + Ædifica pour sa conception visuelle. Il s’agit d’un grand orgue d’orchestre, inscrit dans les registres du facteur de Saint-Hyacinthe comme opus 3900. Il comporte 109 registres, 83 jeux, 116 rangs et 6 489 tuyaux.

Il porte le nom de Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique, en hommage au fondateur et premier directeur général de l’OSM (de 1939 à 1970). Ce mélomane engagé et gestionnaire avisé avait pris la relève de dame Antonia Nantel, épouse de monsieur Athanase David, qui agissait depuis 1934 comme secrétaire du conseil d’administration de la Société des Concerts symphoniques de Montréal, l’organisme ancêtre de l’OSM.

L’achat de cet orgue a été rendu possible par une gracieuseté de madame Jacqueline Desmarais qui en a assumé le coût total et a voulu ainsi perpétuer par son appellation le souvenir de l’irremplaçable contribution de monsieur Pierre Béique à la mission d’excellence de l’OSM.

The organ at Maison symphonique de Montréal, inaugurated on May 28, 2014, was designed and built on behalf of the OSM by the organ builder Casavant with the collaboration of architects Diamond Schmitt + Ædifica for its visual design, and is the Orchestra’s property. This is a large organ intended for orchestral use, and is recorded in the books of the Saint-Hyacinthe builder as Opus 3,900. It consists of 109 registers, 83 stops, 116 ranks and 6,489 pipes.

The instrument bears the name Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique, in tribute to the OSM founder and first general manager (from 1939 to 1970). An astute administrator and a committed music lover, Pierre Béique took over from Dame Antonia Nantel, wife of Mr. Athanase David, who had acted, since 1934, as secretary of the Board of Directors of the Société des Concerts symphoniques de Montréal, the forerunner of the OSM.

Purchase of this organ was made possible, courtesy of the late Mrs. Jacqueline Desmarais, who assumed the total cost and, in so doing, wished to keep alive the memory of the lasting contribution made by Mr. Pierre Béique to the OSM’s mission of excellence.
