Human Cities – "Revendiquer l’espace public“ – Bruxelles - 3e édition du 15 au 31 mars 2012 www.humancities.eu / booking : [email protected] Après Bruxelles et Istanbul en 2010, la troisième édition du Festival Human Cities aura lieu à Bruxelles du 15 au 31 mars 2012. Sous la thématique de “Revendiquer l’espace public“, les participants pourront partager, tester et faire l’expérience d’initiatives citoyennes qui sont emblématiques aujourd’hui d’une appropriation volontaire de l’espace public et qui impliquent tout un chacun, les artistes, designers, architectes, urbanistes, autorités publiques… Le Festival Human Cities 2012 mettra l’accent sur des initiatives issues de la société civile. Ce sera l’occasion de rassembler un public hétérogène - scientifiques, professionnels du territoire, pouvoirs publics et évidemment usagers de l’espace

public - autour d’un événement à la fois créatif, ludique et réflexif. Le festival comprendra des activités diverses telles qu’un symposium, une série d’interventions dans des espaces publics bruxellois insolites ainsi que des actions pédagogiques. De nombreux penseurs qui s’interrogent sur la ville contemporaine ont mis en évidence le déclin ou la métamorphose des espaces publics dans leur acception en tant que lieu de rencontre et de convivialité pour tous les citoyens. L’espace public en tant qu’entité spatiale supposée accessible à tous serait standardisé, sécurisé, muséifié, privatisé et ne soutiendrait plus diverses présences, notamment à cause de la mainmise opérée sur celui-ci par l’État ou le monde marchand et du repli de l’Homme dans la sphère du privé. Pourtant, chaque jour, de nouveaux individus, de nouvelles communautés créatives, de nouveaux réseaux de collaboration s’organisent pour « réclamer » spatialement, physiquement et politiquement l’espace public. Ces initiatives, qui peuvent être matérielles (aménagements, installations, mobiliers,…) et/ou immatérielles (mobilisations, échanges de savoirs, de services,…), durables ou éphémères, ont cependant en commun d’être portées par des acteurs pas ou peu institutionnalisés, qui cherchent à inventer, à stimuler ou à relayer certains objets, processus, programmations, usages ou interactions sociales au sein de l’espace public. Quand ? Du 15 ou 31 mars 2012. Où ? Bruxelles Partenaires? Cet événement international et son symposium sont soutenus par le programme « Culture » (2007-2013) de l’Union européenne et le réseau européen de partenaires associés et de partenaires coorganisateurs. Il fait aussi l’objet du soutien, parmi d’autres, de la Région de Bruxelles- Capitale, de la Vlaamse Overheid, de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles et de la Commune d’Ixelles…

HUmaN CiTieS SymPoSiUm eT workSHoPS« La société civile réclame l’espace public. Perspectives croisées depuis la recherche »

Ce symposium international et interdisciplinaire mettra en perspective des recherches euro-péennes et d’ailleurs. L’accent sera mis sur des travaux qui observent, décrivent, évaluent, théorisent voire disséminent ces initiatives issues de la société civile et qui ont pour objectif de « réclamer » l’espace public au sein des villes contemporaines. Les champs disciplinaires concernés sont variés, allant de l’urbanisme au design, en passant par l’architecture, la so-ciologie, l’anthropologie, les sciences politiques, la philosophie et le droit. Le symposium est adressé à un public large (scientifiques, académiques, étudiants, professionnels du territoire, pouvoirs publics) et proposera des conférences et des ateliers d’expérimentation dans l’espace public. Les actes du symposium seront disponibles en ligne dès mai 2012.

Jour 1 - 15 mars 2012Matinée: I. Axe Analytique (conférences)Cet axe se focalisera sur le contenu et les résultats de recherches qui prennent ces initiatives issues de la société civile pour cas d’études. Plus particulièrement, cet axe explorera les ques-tions suivantes : - Au niveau matériel, quelles peuvent être les incidences de ce type d’initiatives sur la produc-tion de l’espace public ? Quelle est la pluralité des formes adoptées ? Dans quelles mesures peuvent-elles contribuer à l’innovation esthétique, sémantique, fonctionnelle, écologique dans les manières de faire la ville ? - Au niveau du vivre ensemble, de quelles manières intègrent-elles ou reconfigurent-elles des notions telles que la mixité, l’hospitalité ou la convivialité ? Comment peuvent-elles créer des nouvelles modalités d’appropriation, des nouveaux réseaux ? Redéfinissent-elles les rapports entre le public et le privé ? - Au niveau du débat et de l’action en commun, quelle est leur capacité à formuler des nou-velles formes de participation ? Quelle peut être leur incidence sur l’exercice de la citoyenneté ? Quel type d’engagement demandent-elles de la part des acteurs ? Jusqu’à quel point peuvent-elles permettre aux acteurs dits « faibles » d’avoir une influence et une visibilité sur l’espace public ? Dans un monde gouverné par l’incertitude, quels sont leurs substrats idéologiques, quel est leur potentiel critique, quelles sont les formes de bien commun qu’elles défendent ?

Après-midi: II. Axe Méthodologique (conférences)Cet axe se focalisera sur les méthodes et les cadres théoriques mobilisés par les chercheurs lorsqu’il s’agit d’observer, de décrire, de comprendre, d’évaluer, de théoriser ou de dissémi-ner des initiatives issues de la société civile. Cet axe explorera donc les questions suivantes : - Au niveau de la méthode, comment les chercheurs créent-ils ou adaptent-ils leurs outils ? Quelle est la place laissée à l’empirisme et au travail in situ? Dans le cas de recherches-actions ou de recherches « by design », comment les chercheurs opèrent-ils un travail réflexif, com-ment évaluent-ils les transformations et les expérimentations qu’ils opèrent? - Au niveau théorique, comment les chercheurs se positionnent-ils? Comment intègrent-ils les différentes dimensions de ces initiatives issues de la société civile, au niveau spatial, social et politique ? S’appuient-ils sur les réflexions théoriques au moyen desquelles on a longtemps pensé l’activisme urbain ou se tournent-ils vers de nouvelles configurations ?

Jour 2 - 16 mars 2012 Matinée: III. Axe opérationnel (conférences)Cet axe se focalisera sur les recherches-actions ou « by design » qui s’inspirent des initiatives issues de la société civile pour proposer des scénarios prospectifs, des processus de concep-tion ou des boîtes à outils dans le but d’améliorer ou d’inspirer la production de l’espace public au sein des villes contemporaines. Cet axe explorera les enjeux suivants:- Est-il pertinent de proposer des dispositifs qui reproduisent ailleurs des initiatives nées dans un contexte particulier? Si oui, sous quelles formes et avec quels degrés d’adaptabilité ? Pour qui met-on à disposition ce type d’outils ? Quelle est la responsabilité des chercheurs par rap-port aux modèles dont ils s’inspirent ?- Que se passe-t-il lorsqu’on transpose ce type d’initiatives hors du contexte dans lequel elles ont émergé ? Quels en sont les résultats, tant au niveau spatial, social que politique ? La dissémination de ces « bonnes pratiques » ne participe-t-elle pas à une certaine uniformisa-tion de l’espace public ? Ce type de dispositifs contribue-t-il à l’institutionnalisation ou à la récupération des mouvements citoyens, ou, au contraire, permettent-elles de les renforcer ?

Après-midi: IV. Workshops dans l’espace publicDes ateliers seront organisés dans plusieurs espaces publics de la ville en collaboration avec des partenaires internationaux et bruxellois. Ceux-ci permettront aux participants d’interroger et d’explorer par la pratique les questions abordées lors des conférences.

Amidst the so called “Arab spring”, the rhetoric of international human rights as the common goal of humanity and the sublime framework of redemption has repeated itself over and over again. despite the celebration of these events bythose involved with human rights, this lecture aims to show how international human rights law, contrary to its promise of protection of individuals against the state’s interference, is enforcing boundaries in the public space through its attempt to preserve public order,

and demonstrates how international human rights law provides a legal plaform for the oppression of any form of collective action in the public space regardless of their content. ultimately, the lecture will try to explain why referring to human rights law and the domesticated right to freedom of assembly is of benefit to the state more than to the people.

10:55_ Street Art and the Sovereign’s Imagination. pr. Hagi Kenaan, tel Aviv university - iL.this lecture will address the manner in which unsolicited street art responds to the visual order dictated by the contemporary city, a visuality in which the regimentation of the image has become fully adaptive to the logic of late capitalism and, specifically, to the “framing” of the eye by digital technologies and methods of high-speed communication. this is the context in which street art becomes a cru cial presence in the urban sphere (beyond the question of its aesthetic value). the lecture will explore the

following questions: does the official prohibition of painting and writing on the street serve only to protect against attacks on public or private property, or is it also a prohibitive measure taken against attempts to undermine the regime of the imagination imposed by the sovereign power? in what ways do active forms of visual intervention in the street bespeak the right of city dwellers to imagine - to exercise their own powers of imagination - in the public sphere? What kind of spectatorship is called for by street art and how is it different from the visual hegemony dictated by the sovereign? can street art really resist the kind of gaze dictated by the city’s rulers, or is it ultimately condemned to reproduce the same visual/technological principles that serve the sovereign power?

11:35_ The Interstitial Space of the Urban Indian railway. christian Klein and christina taylor Klein (videopresentation), Lovely professional university - in.

the lecture will present an analysis of the various ways in which the urban poor in india create and cultivate unused space for the benefit of themselves and their community. The specific focus of the study is upon the stretches of citizen-appropriated land along the railway tracks in the indian cities of Jalandhar, delhi, and mumbai. driven by the increasing scarcity of available public space in urban india, many have re-appropria-ted portions of the railway easements as well as the active tracks. While some of the land

is simply claimed by adjacent property owners as an extension of their property, it is more commonly

used by lower income residents from adjacent areas for communal farming plots, animal grazing lands, public gathering spaces, open green spaces, and pedestrian corridors. the absence of automobile traffic and the relatively appropriate scale of the railway tracks allow this transformation of these open spaces. in most developed countries, railroad track rights-of-way have become a no-man’s land, isola-ted and uninhabited, but in india, they are alive and vibrant informal public spaces with numerous uses.

11:55_ A Kiosk for the Headscarf: How religion Changes the Public Space. Giacomo Goli-nelli, university of Bologna - it. izmir is a modern and neoliberal turkish metropolis that stands out against the political and civil conservatism of istanbul. in its districts, during the last decade, many urban areas have become the scene for the face-off of the turkish historical laicism and the islamic renaissance. the object of this study is a non-institutionalized re-adaptation of a kiosk located in front of a campus gate, whose windows have been obscured. the purpose of the kiosk is to help all the muslim women to remove and don their headscarf in front of a mirror, unobserved by the general public. in 2009 in turkey the headscarf was forbidden in every school and state building, while allowed in private and public places. the lecture will present the kiosk as a physical and semantic frontier between two social areas ruled by different habits and laws. then it will focus on the perception and the usage of this public space by dif-ferent, potentially antagonist, groups. Finally it will highlight how reappropriation of the public space for religious practice revolutionizes the form and the function, as well as the significance of the area.

12:15_ Urban Culture, Public Spaces and Civil Initiative in a Post-Socialist City: a Case Study. Dejana Nedučin, University of Novi Sad - RS (co-authors: Dušan Ristić and Vladimir Kubet).the past two decades of urban transformations in serbian style illustrate that the development of serbian cities is highly reliant on the new market relations and that there is an apparent dominance of private sector’s profit-making over recognition of public interests, which is a mutual problem of all transitional countries. What makes serbian society different from its post-socialist neighbours is the presence of an exaggerated need for compensation of almost a complete lack of urban culture that a decade of civil wars, war-caused migrations and total social, economic and cultural isolation has produced. the lecture will thus be based on the assumption that the urban culture, deriving from values, attitudes, beliefs and lifestyles of urban residents, is not adequately developed in the contem-porary serbian society and cannot give a necessary support to meaningful civil initiatives that deal with protection and preservation of public spaces. However, the presented case study portrays a profile of a determined and persistent local civil initiative that fought against usurpation of the Fifth park, Belgrade, and succeeded in defending it.

What might a twenty-first century speakers’ corner look like? How should the design process ensure that local people can contribute? the lecture will consider these questions through describing the collaboration between central saint martins college of Art & design (csm), and speakers’ corner trust (sct). the case study projects suggest that the questions are inherently linked. speakers’ corners interventions can affect the way public space is used and understood as a space for debate, if the process of their design and definition is done collaboratively from the start with local people. They also indicate the wider potential of the co-design methodology developed, exploring the public realm as a place for the public sphere, for rethinking public space.

15:00_ In Praise of Urban Wastelands: a Communicative and Complex Approach. Javier ruiz-sánchez, technical university of madrid upm - es.Urban wastelands, those apparently empty spaces we sometimes find in interstitial positions inside our cities, are very often considered the representation of the failure of the urban system, and they are perceived as lack of interest if not definitively dangerous places. They are, of course, incom-patible from the hegemonic point of view of functionalist town planning. modern urbanism syste-

matically makes plans to “urbanize” them, which means much more than physical transformation, but imposition of rules, order and determination. However, wastelands can also be seen as abso-lutely fundamental in urban development. For being nothing they can become anything, reach any possible future. For they lack rules and determined wills, they are full of unpayable freedom. through the application of a methodological approach based on information and communication theory and also in complex systems theory, the lecture will point the important role these spaces are playing, through self-regulatory mechanisms inherent in the urban system in its complexity, both in the correction of present dysfunctions as in the evolutionary potential of the whole system.

15:20_ « Free Translation » as a Critical Method in Socio-political Design Actions. mah-moud Keshavarz, malmö university - se.Practice-based researchers in the design field usually adopt anthropological methods for “obser-ving” or “studying” the field in order to come up with some “design solutions” for a provocative co-designing of socio-political spaces. What designers in socio-political action research do is an act of translation, which in various stages of the action gets different shapes (e.g. between their own knowledge and participants’ knowledge). therefore translation becomes a functional and hierarchi-cal bridge for those who do not know the origin’s language. But such a bridge has lots of cracks, which in a “good translation” are not visible to readers but only to the translator. the translator, by hiding these cracks, never allows readers to engage in the work even if these cracks are fundamen-tally important for understanding the positioning and self-reflexivity occurring during the research. The lecture will draw a retrospective reflection upon the process of collaboration with women rights activists in iran and sweden. By adopting a new politics of translation called “free translation”, i argue that action research in the design field needs such a re-situational method for formulating actions in other contexts, where the first language is not familiar with the second, third and so on. A free translation brings up questions of “qualification”, “power” and “legitimization” and opens a space for more engagement by intensifying the cracks in disciplines, knowledge and contexts.

16:00_ Ways in Which Street Skaters and Street Artists Have Appropriated Space in Jo-hannesburg. potsiso phasha, university of the Witwatersrand - ZA.professions such as urban planning have searched for innovative alternative ways of conducting research as a way of moving away from conventional qualitative methods such as interviews, which have dominated qualitative research. Autophotography – a visual method growing popular in social sciences, is slowly beginning to feature in the methodological landscape of urban research. in this method, participants become the photographers, thus providing a rich reflection of their realities from their own perspectives. through such a method, the lecture will discuss the various ways in which street skaters and street artists have appropriated public space (mainly in the form of streets) for their own needs in Johannesburg, south Africa. it argues that urban change is not only a top-down initiative but also a bottom-up process and using innovative methods that echo this, much can be leant about cities from the ground up.

Urban Sensing Throug such as surveys, interviews, questionnaires and, more recently, data harvesting and analysis (e.g. on the use of mobile devices) have provided interes-ting insights on the social life of urban spaces. recent technological development and the emergent participation of internet users in terms of social interaction, though, are leading us towards a rede-finition of the possibilities of gathering and sharing first-hand information. Marjan Špegel, Institute Stefan for scientific Research - SI (co-author: Biba tominc).the lecture will address the issue of rooftop gardening as one of the alternatives of urban agricul-ture. rooftops in residential neighbourhoods as semi public spaces are often unnoticed and unused in spite of their attractiveness and usability. rooftop gardening is promoted here as a viable alter-native of urban agriculture that could make cities more livable, environmentally friendly and with positive levels of participation - even socially a more hearty place. this lecture will present an expe-riment of an informal rooftop garden in a residential neighbourhood in Ljubljana, slovenia, named mellow roof. it will focus on action research inspired and implemented by an enthusiastic city gar-dener. This on-going experiment is a pure bottom-up project with significant experimental dimen-sions. the lecture will illustrate some perspectives based on these observations and experience.

Tanja Plešivčnik, NGO KVArt - Visual culture and Arts - si.the lecture will present a study which examines solutions to problems of dry stone walls in public space and shows possibilities for designing creative and sustainable public spaces through the use of traditional methods and material available in local environments. the purpose of the study is to serve as the theoretical foundation for interventions to be carried out by nGo KVArt. nGo KVArt began its social initiatives in the Istrian town of Grožnjan, where it was noted that the old dry stone retaining walls needed to be repaired to maintain the landscape and image of the town and also to improve the city’s public space, which lacked permanent activities and sits mostly unused by locals. the lecture will focus on how these kind of projects can create positive effects: from preventing the degradation of the landscape and cities to enriching public space, maintaining and reviving cultu-ral heritage, creating sustainable and innovative public spaces and new social hubs, encouraging collectivism, enabling knowledge transfer, etc., as well as spreading awareness of public space pos-sibilities and encouraging similar social initiatives.

10:25_ From Sackbahnhof to Central and Back. Belfast great Victoria Station as recove-red Public Space. dr.Agustina martire, Queen’s university Belfast - uK (co-authors: mark Hackett and declan Hill).railways have radically transformed the spatial qualities of cities, dictating urban and regional pro-cesses. in recent decades Belfast has been shaped by a relatively unconstrained development mar-ket that has largely failed to create a thriving and vibrant city environment. the demolition of the Great Victoria street railway station in 1976 was part of these publicly funded infrastructure deci-sions which had a major impact on the central city. today Great Victoria street railway station has practically disappeared behind the europa Hotel and the bus station, signifying its secondary status in the city transport hierarchy. However, the transport holding company in charge of the station have been discussing the relocation of the station to sandy row, creating a new transportation hub and public space to articulate the area. during the week long summer school in 2011, the problem of sandy row and the relocation of the station was discussed by Forum for Alternative Belfast (a not-for-profit organisation that campaigns for a better and a more equitable built environment in Belfast) with students and members of the community. the lecture will focus on the results of these discussions and on the ongoing series of workshops following the summer-school that will culmi-nate in the publication of the overall plans which include the railway station.

François Jégou, ensAV La cambre - Be/ ensci paris - Fr/ strategic design scenarios - Be (co-authors: Adèle Seyrig, Sabine Guisse and Julien Knoepfler).the lecture will expose two case studies developed in the framework of the Agenda iris 21 pro-gramme supported by the Brussels capital region between 2009 and 2011:- “Adopt a tree handbook” involving the children and families of saint-Gilles neighbourhood in Brussels in greening the square metre of earth at the bottom of the trees in the streets in front of their own houses;- “citizenship walks action kit” inviting the inhabitant of the molenbeek-saint-Jean neighbourhood in Brussels to take part to collective walks across the area where they live and rediscover it. Both cases will be analysed for their similar strategy to engage people participation in exploring and taking care of public space in the perspective of sustainable ways of living on the one hand, and on the other hand, in enhancing socialisation and refurbishing the social fabric between communities in both these popular areas of Brussels.

11:25_ Collectif Fertile, Nantes. «Designing by Using». tibo Labat, collectif Fertile - Fr (co-authors: Anaïs Léger and paul smith).since the 1980s the city of nantes has undergone a succession of urban mutations linked to de-in-dustrialization. While the well-known project of “ile de nantes” has master planned an « eco-district » of 350 ha, a large number of gaps and leftover spaces still hold great potential in the urban fabric. the collective Fertile is active in two such sites. Based on a rhythm of spontaneous events, Fertile aims to bring out the potential of the sites for public use, ecologic continuities and economic alternative solutions. the intention is to bring people together to initiate and explore imaginative solutions for the use of the spaces. “designing by using” incarnates our concept that encourages locals, artists and planners to re-invent the space by using and living in it. our action, which just gained a three years agreement to occupy the site from the City of Nantes, anticipates and influences urban plan-ning decisions. Fertile’s posture is an “urban prefiguration” to draw an intelligent line for future urban mutations, and wishes to inspire new practices and processes to read, reclaim, and recreate urban public spaces.

number of participants: 15Location/ itinerary: the border land between Brussels’ districtsAttendees should bring digital cameras the workshop will explore the relation between administrative fragmentation resulting from urban politics and the contrasting relationship to everyday public spaces. during the workshop, partici-pants will explore the edge of selected districts in Brussels looking for signs of fragmentation in the every day life but also informal improvements of space made by the citizens themselves. partici-pants will reflect on the network of public space on the edge of districts, they will literally explore this field by taking pictures in situ. In terms of contents, the workshop focuses at the interfaces between activist cultures, professional cultures (e.g. in the planning discipline, but also beyond) and research cultures (e.g. in urban studies) in order to create “platforms” from below, evolving around context-specific local cases and gaining influence on urban and regional scales as centrifugal idea to connect individual grassroots movements. this approach is thought to enable a debate about the public space and its improvement by different social groups but also about the way to survey it and seek for a better quality of the built environment. By focusing on activism, research and practice in public spaces, the workshop will finally question the (individual/professional) ethics, (cultural) values and norms as well as (political) positionality of those who intervene in everyday life in the city. this might lead to reflect on the relation between politics, policy and everyday life.

Among them is the recyclart association, located in the station itself, as well as the Brigittines, Brusk, the Ateliers populaires, the début des Haricots, the inhabitants of the Brigittines building, etc. Year after year, some of the public spaces around the station have gained in visibility and user-friendliness (« La plage », square des ursulines), while others still have great potential today as the focus of new ideas. the observations made by participants in the workshop will contribute to the thinktank organized by recyclart and other actors in the field on the past, the present and the future of the area.

What is the relationship of these young people with the urban space around their living environment? How do they use, hack or abuse these spaces, with whom, and how do they feel about it? After a preparatory walk, we will use the mAp-it participatory mapping metho-dology (www.map-it.be) combined with insights from the Karakol project (www.karakol.be) by Yota! Afterwards, we will re-insert findings of the mapping session in the city in the form of digital markers, of which we hope will facilitate a platform for continuing exchange. ultimately, these observations will lead to projects that aim to strengthen the position of the teenagers within the social and spatial structure of the urban space, and projects that empower inhabitants across generations to create a rich and dynamic social environment.

We work on scenarios for each individual sensory layer as well as on the crosspollination of all. emphasising that the personally experienced phenomena also sustain social aspects, questions addressed in the workshop thus include: How are public spaces perceived by our senses? What type of audience does that involve? How is the “we” expressed? What are the borders and limits of the space? Which type of sensory impressions is desirable? What type of “urban design” deepens the sense of belonging in the public space? the workshop takes a human centric approach and firstly introduces sensory perspectives of the public space, secondly engages all participants in on-site exploration. to conclude, the ambition is to document and analyse the human quality of the public space, share tools on understanding and involving the audience in the making of public space.

WOrKSHOP 9_ Sound space in the city - Discover the Music room. cécile planchais, sculp-tor and designer - Fr and martine cantillon, Brussels-environment - Be.number of participants: 10Location/ itinerary: in front of the musical instruments museumif possible, attendees should bring their cellphone with Qr code readerFrom short-lived to long-lasting: icilasong is an interactive design concept developed by cécile plan-chais to promote access to cultural soundtracks in public urban spaces. the music room was the first permanent Icilasong installation, set up as a lasting feature at the end of 2011 on an order from Brussels-environment and implemented in a partnership with the musical instruments museum. the installation gives the mim a permanent extension in Brussels where music lovers can sit on a uniquely designed bench, let their minds wander and listen to the instruments. passersby discover a lectern that indicates how they can hear the sounds: they flash a Qr code on a camera-telephone and simply sit down to listen. All the details of the soundtrack are found on the mim site. the design has made a surprising addition to the ways to use public space and contributes to the success of an urban project that encourages people to stop for a minute, to have a seat, and to share a cultural moment. this workshop proposes to discover the music room in the company of the designer who developed the concept and the events manager at Brussels-environment that ordered the project.

Le début des Haricots asbl/vzw - Be.number of participants: 40 - open to kids!Location/ itinerary: on the rooftop of the royal Library of Belgium The goal of the project Potage-Toit is to make the most of flat spaces that are not in use (roofs, terraces or others) by creating intensive organic kitchen gardens off the ground. the produce is meant to be marketed for local consumption (cafeteria, retirement home, restaurant, neighbou-rhood, mini-market,… ). potage-toit aims to be a space open to all once or twice a week. Anyone can come to participate or get information on healthy food, on how to make the most of urban areas as production sites and on a type of agriculture that respects the environment. Le début des Haricots proposes a practical workshop on filling pots with earth and creating a kitchen garden on the terrace of the royal Library of Belgium. the workshop is divided into two parts, one theoretical on the various layers of soil and what different plants need, and a practical part filling sacks with mixtures of earth to get the right soil for the plants to be cultivated.

Au cours de cette deuxième phase d’un projet existant de cartographie, Yota propose une mise en images et une matérialisation d’un parcours souhaité par les jeunes, menant par les zones et les endroits significa-tifs à leurs yeux. ces promenades sont organisées en collaboration avec le projet mAp-it de thomas Laureyssens. il s’agit d’une méthode de cartographie qui vise à la médiation de l’incertitude souvent présente dans les processus de conception participative. elle permet de modérer des ateliers dans lesquels des groupes de personnes, socialement diverses, réfléchissent et mettent en place des (nouveaux) projets. mAp-it prend la forme d’une boîte à outils - ou mAp-(k)it - et dispose d’un fond de carte (re-concevable), d’un ensemble ouvert et extensible d’autocollants, accompagnés d’un scénario.

Mobilier Urbain ClimatiqueL’originalité des projets présentés et issus du workshop “mobilier urbain climatique” conjugue une question inédite, un temps de conception très court, une synergie de modes de pensée, de points de vue et de références multiples. Les projets de mobilier urbain ont été pensés selon 6 familles de climats - tropicaux humides, tropicaux secs, subtropicaux, tempérés, subarctiques, polaires - les pro-positions se démultipliant ensuite en jour-nuit et hiver-été.

Potage-Toitce projet a pour but de valoriser des espaces plats et inutilisés (toit, terrasse ou autre) par la créa-tion de potagers bio intensifs, hors sol, visant une production destinée à être commercialisée pour la consommation locale (cantine, maison de retraite, restaurant, mini marché citoyen,…). potage-toit se veut un espace ouvert à tous, une à deux fois par semaine: quiconque peut venir participer ou s’informer sur l’alimentation saine, la valorisation d’espaces urbains en un lieu de production et comment stimuler un mode d’agriculture respectueux de l’environnement. potage-toit propose une journée d’atelier pratique de remplissage de bacs de terre pour la création du potager sur la terrasse de la bibliothèque royale de Belgique. L’atelier se divise en deux parties, une partie théo-rique sur les différentes couches du sol et la nécessité des différentes plantes, et une partie pratique de remplissage des sacs avec les mélanges de terre nécessaire aux plantes qu’on aura cultivées.

Brukselbinnenstebuiten – promenade urbainecette balade urbaine à vélo est organisée dans le prolongement de l’appel à projets « upcycling pu-blic space » lancé par Human Cities. Il ne s’agit pas uniquement et pas spécifiquement de réaména-gements professionnels de rues et de places mais plutôt de la manière dont les habitants/usagers se réapproprient l’espace public pour mieux l’adapter à leurs souhaits et besoins. dans le cadre du fes-tival, Bruksel vous emmène pour une promenade à vélo dans le cantre de la ville. Bien que Bruxelles n’offre pas spécialement une large palette de telles initiatives créatives et parfois anarchiques, Bruksel a recensé pour vous une vingtaine de rues, parcs, places, impasses et cours intérieures où le rôle et l’influence des habitants/usagers sont présents.

The City from the Child’s eye Viewce projet, soutenu par la fondation roi Baudoin, est une expédition qui permet aux enfants, à travers le dessin, la photographie, le cinéma et l’observation, de présenter leur point de vue sur leur ville. ce projet comprend une variété d’ateliers avec des enfants de tous âges, de différentes cultures, langues et d’horizons économiques divers. Ainsi, nous visons à donner aux enfants la possibilité de documenter la ville à partir de leur propre point de vue, leur propre voix. Les ateliers et les proces-sus seront tous soigneusement documentés mais aussi partagés via les médias sociaux, des ateliers communautaires et, enfin, un film documentaire qui sera présenté en avant-première au cours du festival Human cities en mars 2012.

Projections à la CINeMATeK et à Flageycinq long métrages pour illustrer le thème de l’édition 2012 du Festival Human cities: « reclaiming public space ». Avec, notamment, les cinq virées nocturnes de night on earth, chef-d’œuvre tragi-comique du réalisateur indépendant Jim Jarmusch. de rome à paris, d’Helsinki à new York et Los Angeles, le temps d’un voyage, une galerie de personnages – sorte d’humanité en miniature – refait le monde dans l’habitacle d’un taxi de nuit. Autre voyage, autre plongée, hyperréaliste, cette fois, dans l’univers des enfants des rues de salaam Bombay. Le destin d’un gamin livré à lui-même et son combat quotidien pour la survie dans un quartier populaire de Bombay, le temps de gagner les 500 roupies qu’il doit à sa mère… dans smoke, portrait d’un new York intime à travers les destins croisés et les confidences de ses habitants, c’est la clientèle d’un quartier de Brooklyn qui se retrouve autour du comptoir d’un smoke shop. on retrouve un principe quasi similaire dans chacun cherche son chat (cédric Klapisch, 1996) : chloé a perdu son chat. Les habitants du quartier Bastille, des gens tellement ordinaires qu’ils en deviennent extraordinaires, vont l’aider – ou pas – à le retrouver. Enfin, l’espace se resserre encore avec L’immeuble Yacoubian. Habiter sa ville, habiter son histoire ; l’immeuble et ses occupants apparaît ici comme une métaphore du corps social, entre nostalgie et aspiration au chan-gement.Le Festival Human cities se poursuit au cinéma FLAGeY pendant les mois de mars et avril avec une rétrospective de films de Spike Lee. L’IBAI, Institut Bruxellois d’Architecture/Brussels Architectuurinstituut, est un laboratoire de réflexion au sein de recyclart dont le but est de donner au public une nouvelle vision de la ville et de l’archi-tecture et de promouvoir l’architecture comme une pratique culturelle à part entière. iBAi s’inscrit cette saison dans la programmation et la thématique ‘Jonction’. L’objectif est de présenter, un jeudi par mois à Recyclart, des propositions ou réflexions « venant d’ailleurs », et confronter, avec plaisir, le problème belgo-bruxellois apparemment insoluble qu’est la Jonction avec les réponses enthousiasmantes que d’autres villes ont trouvées - ou pas - à leurs propres questions de mobilité et d’urbanisme. Pour cette conférence dans le cadre d’IBAI-JONCTION, nos invités Ann-Sofi Rönnskog et John palmesino, tous deux architectes et urbanistes et co-fondateurs du bureau territorial Agen-cy, vont nous parler de Bâle (Suisse) et de ce qu’on peut, à Bruxelles et dans le cadre de la réflexion sur le futur de la Jonction nord-midi, apprendre de cette ville et région particulières, situées à la frontière de trois pays (France, Suisse, Allemagne). Module de jeux nomadeuLB – Faculté d’architecture La cambre Horta (conférence donnée en français)

Les étudiants de l’unité 27 de la faculté d’Architecture La cambre Horta se pencheront pendant une semaine sur la conception et la construction d’un module de jeux nomade. cette structure ludique mobile suscitera l’imaginaire des enfants et elle offrira une alternative originale aux modules de jeux traditionnels. il sera conçu de façon à pouvoir être installé soit dans un environnement urbain (square, place, rue fermée à la circulation,…) ou dans un espace vert.
