GOLDEN BAUHINA SQUARE

The Expo Promenade (also known as Golden Bauhinia Square) outside the HongKong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the Wan Chai waterfront marks themost significant occasion in Hong Kong's history - the return of the former British

colony to the People's Republic of China, and the establishment of the Hong KongSpecial Administrative Region (HKSAR).

The handover took place in the convention centre with President Jiang Zemin andother dignitaries representing China, and Prince Charles present to witness therelinquishment of what had often been described as "the richest jewel in the BritishCrown".

The main ceremonies took place on the night of 30 June 1997. The Hong KongSAR came into being on 1 July under its Chief Executive, Shanghai-born formershipping magnate, Tung Chee-Hwa.

The "Forever Blooming Bauhinia" Sculpture (Golden Bauhinia) is a gift from theCentral Government to mark the widespread joy of the people at the return of theterritory to the Motherland after more than 150 years. Other gifts to commemorate

Re-guidling of Golden Bauhinia Sculpture in Wan ChaiThe Golden Bauhinia Sculpture will be completely covered during its re-guilding

from 15 Nov 22 Dec. However,Golden Bauhinia Square (GBS), the waterfrontpromenade as well as Reunification Monument and the regular flag-raisingceremony at the GBS will remain open to visitors.

Near the Golden Bauhinia stands the Reunification Monument bearing inscriptionsof President Jiang Zemin's calligraphy.
