Major uptrend in the Electronics sector

Samsung built its first VN plant in

2009 and infused another US$3.2

billion of new investments in 2013.

Second plant was opened in March

2014 in the new Thai Nguyen complex.

Combined yearly capacity of both

plants by end of 2014: 20 million

sets/ phones per month.

In view of the rising labor costs in China, more companies are now actively shifting

production to Vietnam to compete more efficiently, making Vietnam a key contender in the

electronics and semiconductor market.

In 2010, Intel invested US$1 billion to

construct its seventh and largest

assembly test facility in Intel's

global network to produce chipsets.

With the recent announcement of

the closure of its Costa Rica plant,

volumes are expected to shift to

Vietnam.

Nokia’s Vietnam factory is among its

top 3 globally, next to Dongguan

and Beijing.

The US$302 million facility in VSIP

Bac Ninh spans a total area of

65,400 sqm.

Factory is projected to produce 45

million handsets per quarter.

Vietnam remains an attractive investment destination

Vietnam has 58 bilateral investment agreements with various countries. In December 2008, Vietnam

and the US began negotiations of a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). Ongoing negotiations of a

Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement (TPP) address investment issues.

GE has invested more than US$110

million in its manufacturing plant in

Hai Phong, producing wind turbine

components.

Total export volume is around

US$278 million since inception and is

the highest amongst industries in Hai

Two iconic American retail brands

recently established their first

outlets in Vietnam – McDonald’s in

February 2014 and Starbucks in

January 2013.
