BILINGUAL SIGNSMooningwanekaaning – Home of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker – is the Island’s Ojibwe name. Madeline Island is the fi rst off-reservation location in Wisconsin to install bilingual signs. Anishinaabemowin signs recognize the Ojibwe’s sacred ties to Mooningwanekaaning.
