• High cost custom support agreements (CSAs) – Fees for a custom support
agreement’s first year are usually in the range of $200K and can
compound
• Existing physical hardware may be 5-7 years old, expensive
to maintain
• No direct upgrade path to Windows Server 2012 (particularly from
x86 architecture)
• Need to address applications as well as the OS (legacy, ISV, custom)
• Can’t take advantage of modern IT infrastructure and

• Windows updates – including security updates – will no longer

The market landscape
Gartner* research says• For many clients, there is not enough time left to migrate
all their systems that are running Windows Server 2003 and
Windows Server 2003 R2 to a newer version.
• Third-party products might become unsupported as well,
triggered by operating system dates.
• Operating servers with unsupported operating systems
leaves the IT environment or data center open to future
risks due to unfixed security exposures or malfunctioning
software.
• Choosing among the many possible tools and approaches
to mitigate the risk is difficult and highly dependent on the
individual system and the IT environment.
• No single solution will address all scenarios; the best
practice is to establish a combination of approaches based
on a risk management analysis.
