    Hello to Everyone!

    I hope you are enjoying the frigid winter. It makes winter basetraining that much more challenging. As I write this letter, weare in the middle of the Polar Vortex 2014 with wind chill inthe -30s. Thank goodness for treadmills and bike trainers.

    I wanted to say hello to everyone as I have been given the

    honor to be the next President of the Cleveland Tri Club. Istarted triathlon in 2002 with a Sprint race with no intentionsof ever trying an Ironman. The bug hit, and I have raced at alldistances since I started. I have been a member of theCleveland Tri Club since 2006. I joined the CTC board in2008-2009 and have held several positions and duties in thattime. For the past 3 years, I am the person that hasconsistently messed up the gear order for someone!

    CTC has a lot in store for 2014-2015. As many of you havenoticed, our website is currently under re-construction. Wehope to have the new site up and functional very quickly. The new site will be easier to maintain and keep updated with

    pertinent information. My goal for the board is to increase member participation with new committees. Many of ournew members have asked how to get more involved and this is the perfect way. Keep an eye out for positions as we askfor help on various events and activities! This will help keep the club strong and active with new people lending a handto CTC.

    Meet CTC Member: Kurt Molter

    Please tell us about your life outside of triathlon. I am a software engineer and work for Philips Medical Systems

    where I design software for CT scanners. It s a demanding but

    wonderful job CT scanners are such complicated machines that

    the work never gets routine and seeing the resulting images and

    clinical applications really makes you feel good about the work.

    I have been at Philips for 19 years.

    How have you kept yourself motivated?

    That s a hard question because I ve never found it hard to be

    motivated to swim, bike or run as I love all three sports. I m a

    fan of each and love to participate in them, which I think really helps. For me, it has always been easy to workout, perhaps

    because I sit all day at a computer so when I m not working I

    love to be moving. Of course, the camaraderie of people in the

    CTC helps. I always feel like Northeast Ohio is a hotbed for

    running and cycling, and I never have trouble finding great

    people to train with.

    What are some of the biggest changes you have seen in multisport over your time in the sport?

    Obviously, bike technology has come along way. When I bought

    my

    first

    performance

    bike,

    steel

    was

    the

    standard

    frame

    material, and Look was introducing the first clip in pedal. I

    would say, though, that one of the biggest changes is the volume

    of data that the average triathlete can collect with GPS devices

    now. Back in the day, distances were approximate, especially

    the swim, and you waited several weeks to get your official time

    and results in the mail. Today, you have distance, splits, power

    output, heart rate, and calories burned at your fingertips. It s

    good to have all that science and information, but maybe it s

    taken a little of the simplicity out of the sport.

    What was your first race?

    When I was a sophomore in High School, I saw a flyer for the Canton Budlight Triathlon. I was running high school

    track and cross country and had never heard of triathlon. This was 1982, and triathlon was just getting established, and

    the Canton Budlight race was a pretty big one. So here was this race with my three favorite things: I loved high school

    track, road my bike everywhere an addition to splashing around in the local lakes I had swum in while in Boy Scouts.

    Scouts. It just looked like such a cool event, and I was able to talk my parents into driving me to Canton for the race. I

    made it through the swim okay and on the bike I was yelled at by the officials for not riding with a helmet (what 16

    year old kid had a bike helmet in 1982!). I remember the 10K run was much tougher than I anticipated, and I walked a

    lot. But I finished and was hooked!

    Two years later, the fledgling sport of triathlon was taking hold and Cleveland hosted the Emerald Health Half

    Ironman, one of the early Half Ironmans in the country. After a swim at Edgewater, the bike course took you to the

    Metroparks in Rocky River and then all the way out to Brecksville and back to Rocky River for the run. That race was

    my first long distance triathlon at the young age of 18.

    What is your favorite distance?

    The intrigue of the of the Ironman lured me to finish 9 of them, but for sure, I prefer the Olympic Distance. It s a

    distance that requires dedicated training and planning but is not consuming like the Ironman and can be raced multiple

    times in a season. Whereas the Ironman run has always been survival for me, when I finally put on my running shoes in

    the Olympic distance I feel like I am still racing .

    What are some of the biggest mistakes you see people making in terms of training? Racing?

    Fortunately, the sport has grown such that there is so much good information and coaching available that most people I

    see take on training and racing in a correct and educated manner. With that said however, many people over

    emphasize the need for fancy lightweight equipment, gadgets and complicated training programs. For most triathletes the gains from expensive equipment are very small compared to the gains possible from simply increasing base mileage.

    For most people it is a pretty simple formula: swim, bike and run more and you ll be a better triathlete.

    What are some of your favorite events that you have done that were not races?

    I always enjoy the CTC swim challenge and, the last several years, I ve been attending a week long triathlon training

    camp in Helen Georgia at the end of March put on by HFP Racing. That s an incredible week focused on riding the

    beautiful mountain roads with a great bunch of people.

    I have fond memories of some challenging training events I organized over the years. One was what I called the

    Double C which entailed a Saturday ride from Cleveland to Columbus with an overnight stay Columbus and a return

    ride

    on

    Sunday.

    It

    seems

    a

    little

    extreme

    but

    with

    some

    good

    base

    fitness,

    mental

    tenacity

    and

    one

    or

    two

    good

    riding

    buddies, its one heck of a weekend.

    What is your favorite multi sport memory?

    Back in the 90 s what is now called the Cleveland Triathlon was known as the National City Triathlon. It was one of the

    biggest and most competitive races in the country, even hosted the age group national championships. During those

    years, the race was on everybody s A list, so each August that weekend was the triathlon party of the year. The bike

    course was an out and back from Cleveland s inner harbor out to University Circle and then up and around the Shaker

    Lakes. It was one of the most exciting rides you could do in Cleveland. After the amateur race, there was usually a

    criterium style professional race, which was pretty exciting to watch. Those were great times.

    Do you have a favorite race? Favorite race moment?

    A favorite has to be the Wildflower Triathlon. Wildflower is often called The Woodstock of Triathlons and has been

    aroun d since triathlon s inception. It has retained it s grass roots, tree hugger hippy California style. Picture triathletes,

    friends, and family that number close to 10,000 camped out in the remote golden hills somewhere between San

    Francisco and Los Angeles. There are multiple weekend races that include an Olympic and a super hilly tough Half

    Ironman. This is defiantly a race that everyone should experience at some point. For a favorite race moment, I was

    fortunate to be able to race Ironman Kona and running down Alii Drive tops the list.

    What kind of athlete were you when you first started? Best advice you have ever received?

    Great Lakes 100 Mile Triathlon Series

    The Great Lakes 100 Mile Triathlon Series will establish its Lake Erie race as an early season tradition in2014. The 100 Mile Triathlon & Duathlon event will take place on June 7th at Geneva State Park and consistof a 1 mile swim in Lake Erie, an 84 mile bike course and a 15 mile run through Geneva-on-the-Lake, for atotal of 100 miles. Duathletes will complete a 1 mile trail run in lieu of the 1 mile swim and relays may beformed by any combination of 2 or 3 athletes.

    2014 will bring some improvements to the race including ice at every run course aid station and a finish line

    picnic meal in the park. Perhaps best of all, Great Lakes Brewing will provide beer for the after party, onceagain hosted by Firehouse Winery along the run course in the village of Geneva-on-the-Lake.
