A letter from the Pastor My dear People at Blessed Seelos Parish: Today’s main character in the Gospel is St. John the Baptist. John has always intrigued me, and I have often wondered what would he be like if I was able to have a personal conversation with him. I get the feeling that he would have me agreeing with him not too long into the conversation, not because of his style, perhaps, but because of his conviction. I would think that my personality would be very different from John’s, as many of you would also agree in regards to your own personality. John seems to me to be too stern, too direct, not very tactful, and very persistent. Perhaps that last trait would be the only one I would share with him. So naturally I would not gravitate to him. But there are people that due to their sheer commitment and dedication to the faith have the gift to draw others to themselves and more importantly to God. Today, Second Sunday of Advent, may be a good day to ask ourselves how strong is our commitment to God. Is my faith pretty definitive (always realizing that faith is a divine gift we need to ask for and not take for granted), or is my faith ambivalent. Concretely, take a look at your last few Sundays and ask yourself how and if you have attended Holy Mass. That should be a good gauge for you of your faith. Hoy el personaje principal del evangelio es San Juan Bautista. Juan siempre me ha intrigado, y muchas veces me he preguntado cómo sería un encuentro personal con él. Me da la impresión que me tendría pensando de acuerdo con él muy temprano durante nuestra conversación. Esto sería, no debido a su estilo, sino debido a su convicción. Pienso que mi personalidad es muy diferente a la de Juan. Quizás muchos de ustedes que me leen piensen lo mismo con respecto a sus personalidades en comparación con la de Juan. Juan me parece ser muy rígido, muy directo, con poco tacto, y muy persistente. Quizás esta última cualidad es la única que podría decir comparto con él. Naturalmente, no me sentiría atraído a él. Pero hay personas que por su compromiso y dedicación a la fe, tienen el don de atraer a otros a sí mismos y, más importante, a Dios. Hoy en este segundo domingo de Adviento, es un buen día para preguntarnos cuan fuerte es nuestro compromiso con Dios. ¿Es mi fe decidida (siempre dándonos cuenta que la fe es un regalo divino y que la tenemos que pedir y no tomarla por sentado), o es mi fe ambivalente? Concretamente, mire su asistencia a Misa en los últimos domingos y hágase la pregunta si ha asistido o no. Eso debe ser una buena medida de cómo está su fe. Fr. José Ignacio

Do Advent Reflections. Get a Book of Advent Reflections to help you focus your thoughts during this time of waiting and anticipation. Commit to Helping Someone Else During Advent and/or Throughout the Year. Take your children and shop for someone less fortunate than yourself. Make a Retreat; even if you can’t find one that works for you, it is possible to do your own mini-retreat right at home. Go to Confession before Christmas Day; Do more than the minimum obligation for Catholics of one Confession yearly. Go and cleanse your soul in anticipation of the great feast of His birth.
