Dear Friends,Yes, it is true. AIJA, our beloved vibrant organization that is so young at heart, is reaching the impressive age of fifty years.

It is a great pleasure for me to invite you to AIJAs 50th Annual Congress in the magical city of Barcelona. Not only are we, law-yers from different corners of the world, gathering together for the 50th time to share, learn and develop, we are doing it in one of the most lively and vibrant cities in Europe – Barcelona.

Barcelona is a lot like AIJA. It is a city that is very much alive and kicking despite having existed for a long time. But, when the founding of Barcelona is still in dispute – was it founded by Hercules 400 years before the building of Rome or by Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal in the 3rd century B.C.? - the founding of AIJA is quite clear to us. It happened 50 years ago.

Apart from being a vibrant metropolis on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona is different from any other city due to its architecture, the Catalan Gothic blended with the Catalan Art Nouveau, “modern-ism”. The presence of Antoni Gaudí, an architect who, like AIJA, dared to challenge the conventional1 , can be sensed in magical places like Parc Güeill, Casa Batlló and, of course, Sagrada Família.

The resemblance with AIJA strikes again – Sagrada Família has been under construction since 1882 and will not be finished until at the earliest in 2017, but then the renovation of its older parts will continue and probably never come to an end. In the same way, AIJA will never be “finished” and “complete”. AIJA will continue to develop and change as new members join and influence it in their own special way.’

To mention a few of the treats that our wonderful and enthusiastic organizing committee have pre-pared for us, we will have the Opening Ceremony in the astonishing Palau de la Música Catalana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts the only concert hall auditorium in Europe illuminated only by natural light in daylight hours. Also, we will of course be able to enjoy our AIJA specialty, home hospitality, when Catalan lawyers open their homes for us. But, for the time being, we will not reveal more.

Our fantastic Work Coordinators Grégoire Ryelandt and Marta Trinidade have worked hard to ensure that the good quality of the scientific program is maintained and, if possible, enhanced. We will again enjoy a mix of working sessions and workshops that offers something for everyone.

And if you would happen to have some spare time between all the excellent sessions, you can take a stroll along La Rambla, which actually consists of five boulevards, or ramblas, joined as one long promenade between Plaça de Catalunya and the Columbus statue on the waterfront. La Rambla is packed with artists, terraces, tourists and locals and is one of the most lively places in Spain.

And, I almost forgot, there is one other thing that is common for AIJA and Barcelona – football. Barcelona has Barça and AIJA has the AIJA team!

AIJA’s last Congress in Barcelona was in 1990 and now, twenty-two years later for our 50th Congress, we are back again. This Congress, our half-a-century anniversary, will be an unforgettable one. Come and join us!

Le Congrès Annuel de l’AIJA de 2012

Chers Amis,Ça y est, notre jeune, dynamique et bien aimée Association a atteint l’âge respectable de 50 ans

C'est avec un grand plaisir que je vous invite au 50e Congrès annuel qui se tiendra dans la ville magique de Barcelone. Non seulement nous allons nous retrouver, pour la 50ème fois, entre avocats des 4 coins du monde, pour partager, pour apprendre et pour nous développer dans l’une des villes les plus vivantes et énergiques d’Europe – Barcelone.

Barcelone est à l’image de l’AIJA : une ville très vivante en dépit de son grand âge. Mais alors que les origines de Barcelone font encore débat – est-ce Hercule qui l’aurait fondé il y a 400 ans, bien avant la fondation de Rome, ou serait-ce Hamilcar Barca, le père d’Hannibal au 3e siècle avant JC ? – les origines de l’AIJA sont pour nous très claires. C’est arrivé il y a 50 ans.

Au-delà d’une métropole de la côte méditerranéenne pleine de vie, Barcelone est différente des autres villes par son architecture, ce style gothique catalan mélangé au style catalan art nouveau, ce « modernisme ». La présence de l’architecte Antonio Gaudí qui, comme l’AIJA, a osé défier les conventions, se ressent dans des lieux aussi fabuleux que le Parc Güeill, la Casa Batlló ou, bien sûr, la Sagrada Família.

Sa ressemblance avec l'AIJA est frappante – la Sagrada Familia est en construction depuis 1882 et sera terminée au plus tôt en 2017, mais la rénovation de ses parties les plus anciennes continuera probablement ensuite. De la même manière, l'AIJA ne sera jamais totalement «achevée». L’AIJA con-tinuera à se développer et à évoluer au fur et à mesure de l’adhésion de ses nouveaux membres et de l’empreinte que ceux-ci y laisseront.

Pour ne citer que quelques unes des surprises que nous a réservées notre merveilleux et enthou-siaste comité d’organisation, la Cérémonie d’Ouverture se déroulera au sein du surprenant Palau de la Música Catalana, un bâtiment inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l’humanité par l’UNESCO, qui peut se vanter d’héberger l’unique salle de concert d’Europe éclairée à la lumière du jour durant les heures d’ouverture. Nous aurons également le plaisir de sacrifier à un rite cher à l’AIJA, le dîner chez les confrères, une occasion de vivre l’hospitalité catalane. Mais pour l’heure nous n’en révèlerons pas davantage.

Nos excellents coordinateurs de travaux Grégoire Ryelandt et Marta Trindade ont travaillé ardemment pour nous assurer d’un programme scientifique de grande qualité. Nous profiterons comme toujours d’un savant mélange entre des séances de travail et des ateliers où chacun trouvera son bonheur.

Et si d’aventure vous parveniez à dégager du temps libre, vous pourrez toujours vous promener le long de la Rambla qui en réalité se compose de cinq boulevards ou des « ramblas » qui relient, par une longue promenade la Place de Catalunya à la Statue de Christophe Colomb sur le front de mer. La Rambla est pleine d’artistes, de terrasses, de touristes et de locaux ; c’est l’un des endroits les plus vivants d’Espagne.

J’ai failli oublier un autre point en commun entre l’AIJA et Barcelone – le football. Barcelone a son Barça et l’AIJA a son équipe AIJA.

Le dernier Congrès AIJA organisé dans la ville remonte à 1990, 22 ans plus tard nous sommes de retour pour notre 50e Congrès.

Ce Congrès, notre demi-siècle d’existence, sera inoubliable. Rejoignez-nous !

Time goes by, and AIJA is reaching it´s first half century. Yes, we are about to celebrate its 50th Annual Congress, and when it comes to celebrating which venue could be better than a seaside Spanish city? With its mild climate, its lively beaches and a vibrant nightlife, Barcelona is the best location for this occasion.

In addition to the attractiveness of a Mediterranean city, Barcelona has a large variety of historical and cultural attractions: the gothic center, Picasso’s Museum, the modernist buildings, Gaudí’s work or the latest works of Jean Nouvel or Calatrava.

Although Barcelona has become a very cosmopolitan city, you still have the opportunity to experience the Spanish flavour in its gastronomy and flamenco shows. Walking down the Ramblas and visiting the marina is a must.

Besides its tourist attractions, Barcelona is the engine of Catalonia and one of the most important business centers in Spain. It has a very significant foreign investment concentrated in the transport and logistics sector. Barcelona’s leading industries are mainly tex-tile, motor, agri-food and chemical.

Due to its convenient location and accommodation capacity, Bar-celona was able to successfully host the Olympic Games in 1992, really unforgettable for those of us who had the opportunity to live them intensively. Nowadays, Barcelona hosts a high number of trade shows each year. Barcelona International Airport, located 13 km from the city center, has direct connections with the main European cities, as well as with Latin and North-American cities.

Even those who have not yet experienced Barcelona may have already seen its locations through very well known Spanish or international movies, All About My Mother, by Pedro Almodóvar or the recent Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona by Woody Allen; listened to its local musicians such as Montserrat Caballé, Joan Manuel Serrat or the band Estopa; or wore the last collection of Mango or Custo Barcelona. You sure have heard about the unstoppable FC Barce-lona (Barça) winning the fourth Champions League!

Recently a new verb has been invented by the Spanish people, “mediterranear”. It´s still not admitted by the Royal Spanish Academy but it concentrates all and every single of the foregoing reasons. It´s life, sun, passion and the perfect mixture of hard work and fun. If you really want to experience its meaning, you defi-nitely must reserve your holidays for the last week in next year´s August. Are you AIJA? Do you want to mediterranear? Then don´t miss Barcelona 2012!!

Le temps passe si vite, et l'AIJA atteint son premier demi-siècle. Oui, nous sommes sur le point de célébrer son 50ème Congrès annuel. Et quand il s'agit de célébrer, quel endroit pourrait être plus approprié qu'une ville côtière espagnole? Avec son doux climat et sa vibrante vie nocturne, Barcelone est le plus bel endroit pour cette occasion.

En plus de l'attractivité d'une ville méditerranéenne, Barcelone dispose d'une large variété d'attractions touristiques et culturelles: le centre gothique, le musée Picasso, les bâtiments modernistes, l'œuvre de Gaudi ou les dernières réalisations de Jean Nouvel ou Calatrava.

Bien que Barcelone soit devenue une ville très cosmopolite, l’esprit espagnol y est encore très présent dans sa gastronomie et dans les spectacles de flamenco. Descendre les Ramblas et visiter la marina est un must.

En marge de ses attractions touristiques, Barcelone est le moteur de la Catalogne et l’un des plus importants centres d’affaires en Espagne. D’importants investissements étrangers ont été effectués dans les sect-eurs de la logistique et du transport. Les industries les plus importantes à Barcelone sont le textile, l’automobile, l’alimentaire et la chimie.

Grâce à sa localisation et sa capacité hôtelière, Barcelone a pu accueillir les Jeux Olympiques de 1992. Ces Jeux sont inscrits dans la mémoire de ceux qui ont eu l’occasion de les vivre intensément. Tous les ans, Barcelone accueille un grand nombre de foires. L’aéroport international de Barcelone, situé à 13 km du centre-ville, a des connections directes avec les principales villes européennes, ainsi qu’avec l’Amérique Latine et l’Amérique du Nord.

Ceux qui n’ont pas eu l’occasion de visiter Barcelone en auront sans doute déjà eu un aperçu au travers de célèbres films espagnols et étrangers, tels que Tout sur ma mère, de Pedro Almodóvar ou le plus récent Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona de Woody Allen ; par les chansons de musiciens locaux comme Montserrat Caballé, Joan Manuel Serrat ou le groupe Estopa ; en portant les dernières créations de Mango ou de Custo Barcelona. Vous aurez aussi certainement entendu parler de l’inarrêtable FC Barcelone (Barça) et de sa quatrième victoire en Champions League !

Récemment, un nouveau verbe a été inventé par les Espagnols : « mediterranear ». Il n’a pas encore été répertorié par l’Académie Royale Espagnole, mais il concentre toutes les caractéristiques suivantes : vie, soleil, passion et la combinaison idéale de travail intense et de fun. Si vous voulez vraiment ressentir la signification de ce verbe, vous devez dès à présent réserver vos vacances durant la dernière semaine du mois d’août l’an prochain. Etes-vous AIJA ? It has become a tradition at that AIJA Congresses feature not only an outstand-ing scientific and social program. Adding a Pre-Congress Seminar as well as the increasingly popular Voice of the Profession (VOP) Session, AIJA will guarantee also in Barcelona a diverse program for all.

The Pre-Congress Seminar, organized by one of AIJA’s scientific commissions, pre-cedes the actual Congress with a relevant topic. It attracts international as well as local delegates alike and serves as a great opportunity to start networking early.

The Voice of the Profession (VOP) Session is organized by AIJA’s Human Rights Com-mission. In a one-hour session before the official opening of the Congress, AIJA in-vites VIP guests and interested delegates to participate in a lively discussion around burning topics of Corporate Responsibility and Human Rights. Certainly a session not to miss.

We look forward to welcoming you to Barcelona!
