    SMS vs. WAP

SMS (Short MessagingService)Similar to paging, SMS is aservice for sending short textmessages to mobile phones.

    Messages must be no longer

than 160 alpha-numericcharacters and contain noimages or graphics.

WAP (Wireless ApplicationProtocol)WAP is a secure specification thatallows users to access informationinstantly via handheld devices such asmobile phones, pagers, two-way radios,

smartphones and communicators.WAPs that use displays and access theInternet run what are calledmicrobrowsers--browsers with small filesizes that can accommodate the lowmemory constraints of handheld devicesand the the low-bandwidth constraints of

a wireless-handheld network.Because WAP is fairly new, it is not aformal standard yet. It is still an initiativethat was started by Unwired Planet,

    Motorola, Nokia, and Ericsson.

    MySAP Mobile Time & Expenses

    Key functionality: Time sheets

The mobile time sheet communicates with theCross-Application Time Sheet (CATS) in yourmain SAP system. Information transfers easilyfrom one system to the other.

Employees just point and click to enter, copy, change, and delete time-sheet items.

Data entry fields can be customized forvarious employee profiles to optimize dataentry for various roles and individuals.

Detailed, long text descriptions of activitiescan be entered offline to enable betterunderstanding of projects and billing.

Each employee can save a preliminaryversion of time data in the main SAP systemto serve as a backup (for use in the event alaptop is lost, for example). Follow-onbusiness processes such as approval andbilling are triggered when the employeereleases a final version of this data.

Mobile employees are kept informed of thestatus of time data sent for approval. Thisenables them to react quickly to changingsituations.

Key functions: Travel expensesThe system displays the employee's trip list andthe status of each trip (draft synchronized, approved, or paid).Users can create new trips, copy existing trips, andassign individual receipts to each trip.Costs can be distributed to different accountingobjects, such as projects and orders.

Data validation and plausibility checks can beperformed offline.Errors detected during synchronization arereported on the employee's mobile device, enabling immediate correction.Tracking of exact reimbursement amounts enablesbetter control of employee expenses.

An expenses summary sheet can be printed out

for the employee's records or for administrationpurposes.Customized employee profiles allow rapid accessto personalized and role-based information.Standard customizing allows support for local andregional differences, such as country-specificversions and languages.
