Direct Objects

O We have already seen Direct objects.

This is when you replace an object with

a pronoun to avoid repeating it.

O E.g. Paul has an apple. He eats it.

O Paul a une pomme. Il la mange.

Direct Objects

ODirect Objects are used when the

pronoun is directly following the

verb. It answers the questions

“what” or “who” receives the action

of the verb.

Marie deteste les chiens.

- Elle deteste quoi? Ou qui?

- Les chiens.

-> Marie les deteste.

Direct Objects

The placement of the direct objet pronoun:

• right before the verb of which it is the object.

• right before the auxiliary in a passé composé

sentence with agreement of the participle.

• right before the infinitive (main verb of the

sentence) of which it is the object.

With the passé composé with avoir, there is

agreement of the past participle.** the pronoun is placed before the auxiliary**

Indirect objects

OThere are also indirect objects

which function the same way direct

objects.

OHowever, their pronouns are

slightly different.

O Indirect objects are when there is a

preposition (such as à/de) between

the verb and the pronoun.

O It answers the questions “to whom”

or “for whom” the action of the verb

occurs.

How do I know which one to use?

O If there is the preposition à or pour

after the verb and before the noun it

is an indirect object.

OE.g. Elle parle à ses amis.

O If there is no preposition you can

safely assume that it will require a

direct object.

OMany verbs that are direct in English will

remain direct in French.

OHowever, not all verbs will follow the

pattern.

OE.g. I telephoned my friends (DIRECT)

OJ’ai téléphoné à mes amis. (INDIRECT)

O I disobey the teacher. (DIRECT)

OJe désobéis à l’enseignante. (INDIRECT)

Direct and indirect pronouns in the

same sentence?

When you have a direct and an

indirect pronoun in the same

sentence, both pronouns are placed

in the same spot in the sentence.

The order of the pronouns are:

Me le

Te la lui

Nous l’ leur

Vous les

1. Je donne le livre à Marie.

= Je le lui donne.

2. Nous avons donné la lettre aux filles.

= Nous la leur avons donnée.
