Supreme Clean Automotive Detailing, LLC “The Perfection is Found in the Reflection.”

2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

This Evolution(Evo) was sporting 17" gray Enkei wheels, Brembo Brakes and a

coil over suspension to handle traction and a 5-speed manual gearbox pushing

more than 300hp. The aluminum roof panel and other reductions in body weight

have lowered the centre of gravity to produce more natural roll characteristics.

The owner of the Evo came to Supreme Clean to discuss the possibilities ofcleaning up the exterior of the vehicle. After extended discussion with the owner

to ensure we understood his needs, we decided the best course to take was a

Two Step Polish, with added clay-bar service, as well as minor scratch

correction. This way all of the owners concerns of getting a glossy, slick finish

that was sustainable through simple hand-washes. The interior of the Evo was

not going to be touched.

The owner chose to deliver the vehicle. Upon delivery, the overall condition of the

exterior of the vehicle was inspected. There was general road grime coating all

the surfaces of the Evo, as well as some light tar sling, and “bug guts” on the

front end of the vehicle.

The overcast and cloudy day made taking pictures extremely difficult. The front

end was generally dirty with many rock chips and “bug guts.”

The lower rocker panels had light tar sling on them that most likely came from the

vehicle being driven through construction zones.

Light contamination on the lower rocker panels from general driving.

The 17” Enkei wheels had light dirt and break dust coating the painted surface.

After initial inspection, it was time for the decontamination phase of the detail.

This consisted of cleaning the wheels, cleaning the wheel wells, washing the

vehicle, and clay-barring. Various brushes and products were used.

Once the wheels were cleaned, the Evo was initially foamed with a mixture of all

purpose cleaner, foam wash, and lubricant to remove prior protection.

After the initial foam and luxurious wash with premium microfiber mitts, the entire

vehicle was clay barred with a brand new clay-bar. As seen, there were many

embeded contaminates in the paint.

Overall, the Evo had normal contamination for a vehicle that is driven often. The

clay-bar process left a glassy-smooth finish to the vehicle.

After the decontamination process was completed, the head-lamps and tail-

lamps were polished to restore as much clarity and glass as possible.

Unfortunately we were not able to capture any pictures of this process. After

polishing the head-lamps and tail-lamps the entire front end was polished.

Extreme care was taken not to harm any edges during the process. Edges,

plastics and grills were taped off prior to polishing. The front end was polishing

using 3.5” finishing pads via a rotary polisher. We were not extremely aggressive

with correction on the front end because of amount of rock chips and cracks on

the plastic front end. The polishing resulted in a glossy finish ready for finishing.

Polished front end resulted in a glossy finish that was ready for the finishing

steps. The next step of the detail was to determine how aggressively we needed

to polish the rest of the paint on the Evo. To do this we inspected each panel in a

dimmed room with 1000 watt halogen work-lights.

As seen in the photo, the Evoʼs paint had light, wash-induced marring in the clear

coat. There were little to now deep defects that needed an extremely aggressive

polish. It was determined that a slightly abrasive polish would be applied via a

rotary polisher on a slightly aggressive foam polishing pad. The result was

95%-98% paint correction, high gloss and A finishing polish was then applied via

rotary polisher to enhance the gloss of the finish.

Once the polishing was finished, we moved our focus to the hood. Initially this

Evo came with a carbon-fiber hood, which the owner replaced with a used stock

hood. The new hood was in dire need of some closer attention. There was some

deeper scratches that after detailed discussion with the owner, needed to be wet-

sanded. Extreme caution is taken whenever we wet-sand paint. During spotsanding, we first attempt to remove the scratches using conventional

compounding and polishing techniques. If we are unsuccessful, we move to our

wet-sanding approach. Depending on the severity of the scratch, we choose a

grit of Uni-Grit Professional Sand Paper. We choose from 1500, 2000, 2500, and

3000 grit papers. Lower grit for more severe scratches. For this purpose we

started with 2000 grit paper, then moved on to 2500 girt, then 3000 girt. This was

followed by compounding with a wool pad, and heavy compound. The heavy

compound was followed by a polish, then finishing polish. The entire hood wasthen compounded, polished, then jeweled to a near perfect finish.

The scratches were extremely difficult to capture on camera because of the

nature of the silver paint.

Photos taken after the last step of the wet-sanding process. Unfortunately we

were unable to take more photos due to time restrictions.

The wet-sanding and compounding process created large amounts of dust that

coated the entire vehicle. The Evo was foamed to remove any other polishing

residues, oils, and dust.

After the final wash, it was time for the protection stage of the detail. The Evo

was first dried with premium microfiber drying towels. A new synthetic paint

sealant was applied with soft-foam applicator pads. This sealant is going to

provide 4-6 months(depending on weather conditions) of protection to the paint.

The sealant leaves an extremely glossy and “plastic” looking finish to the vehicle.

To add a deeper gloss, a carnauba wax was applied with soft-foam applicator,

and buffed off with plush microfibers. The end result was a well protected, slick

finish, that was both deep and glossy.

The next day, the Evo was pulled out for final pictures. Fortunately, the sun was

out and the weather was cooperating.
