Techological design:Why a transformerless topology ?
Best solution to maximise the triptic : Need of 3% thdi Dc Bus at 800 v no need of output
transformer.
footprint
EfficiencyCosts
Save cost Save footprint Experience with Comet, Galaxy 3000, Galaxy 5000 Up to date topology
Is it the only topology without transformer ?
Critical Power & Cooling Services Division - 2008 9

Voltage elevator
Choke for smoothing
Sinus
Supressing H3 and H5 (triangle/zigzag)
Galvanic isolation between M1 input
and output
G6K The truth about G6K output transformer
No use : DC voltage is 800
v
Still exists
Higher IGBT ratings (cheaper
and cheaper)
Have to add one transformer at the
output
Galaxy 7000
Critical Power & Cooling Services Division - 2008 10
Low frequency disturbances : Lightning :over voltage
Transformer will lower the impact of over
voltage.
PWGalaxy 5000
In input EMC filter:capacitor Phase earth
+common mode choke lower the
impact of over voltage
High frequency disturbances : « arcing »
The inverter transformer will play no role and will transmit all
disturbances EMC filter includes device for better
protection
Phenomenoms
Techological design:Transformer less issue : at the input level
Critical Power & Cooling Services Division - 2008 11
DC voltage at the output of the UPS caused by a problem of electronic
regulation
Transformer can suppy up till 5 %
PWGalaxy 5000
DC current at the output of the UPS (power supply with
only one diode)
Electronic regulates to have no DC voltage.
If electronic trouble, inverter transformer is saturated, the inverter is overloaded and transfer to by-pass
G5K can supply up till 10% of DC Current
Electronic regulates to have no DC voltage.
If electronic trouble, control loop orders a transfer to by-pass
UPS inverter fault between phase or on DC Bus
Only electronic regulation can guaranty the non
transmission to the load
Only electronic regulation can guaranty the non
transmission to the load
Phenomenoms
Techological design:Transformer less issue : at the UPS level
Critical Power & Cooling Services Division - 2008 12
Short circuit capacities
PWGalaxy 5000
Short circuit is divided upon 2 legs at the primary of the transformer
IGBT are bigger and able to provide excellent results
Check tableCheck table
Transformer can be used to adapt the output voltage
Electronics can sets up precisely
Electronics can set from -3 to +3% the output voltage
Transfo with Delta Y widings suppresses these
harmonics : smaller inverter IGBT ratings
Higher IGBT ratings
Harmonics coming from the load, mainly H3
