Page 8: ) Please go through this powerpoint document page by page

Read the paragraph below and identify 10 grammar errors:

• The traveller is different at the tourist in much ways. Firstable, the traveller passes more time in the foreigner country. Secondly the tourist stays in resorts instead the traveller stays in more interessant places. At last the tourist just wants to relax, and not necessarily discovering new things. So we can see that a traveller is not the same than a tourist.

Page 9: ) Please go through this powerpoint document page by page

In this slide the 10 grammar errors are indicated. Had you found them? The next slide will give you the corrected version:

• The traveller is different at the tourist in muchways. Firstable, the traveller passes more time in the foreigner country. Secondly the tourist stays in resorts instead the traveller stays in more interessant places. At last the tourist just wants to relax, and not necessarily discovering new things. So we can see that a traveller is not the same thana tourist.

Page 10: ) Please go through this powerpoint document page by page

Corrected version

• The traveller is different from the tourist in manyways. First of all, the traveller spends more time in the foreign country. Secondly, the tourist stays in resorts whereas the traveller stays in more interesting places. Finally the tourist just wants to relax, and not necessarily to discover new things. So we can see that a traveller is not the same as a tourist.

Did you know?Did you know that in English we can take some of the simplest verbs in the English language (e.g. take, carry, set, make, pick, turn, get, bump, look, switch, put, run, etc.) and by adding on a preposition (e.g. on, up, at, in, by, to, from, along, of, into, out, off etc.) we can create a whole new meaning. These new verbs are called ‘Phrasal Verbs’.See below for some examples:

• If you don’t understand a word look it up in a dictionary (or Google it).

• The police are looking into the affair.

• It’s dark in here, switch on the light.

• That music is too loud, turn down the sound.

• My flight took off on time.

• I lived in Germany for six months back in 1995, while I was there I picked up a little bit of the language

• I bumped into an old college friend at the supermarket yesterday.

• USA English: All my life I wanted to travel into outer space.

Did you know?Did you know that there are three ways to pronounce the ‘ed’ sound at the end of regular verbs in the past simple?

• /d/ the soft ‘d’ sound is used to say words like: dined; killed; ignored; called; dared. Listen here: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=dined&submit=Submit

• /t/ the hard ‘t’ sound is used to say words like: backed; faced; asked; walked; helped. Listen here: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=backed&submit=Submit

• /id/ the long ‘id’ sound is used to say words like: parted; aided; invested; waited; stated. Listen here: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=parted&submit=Submit

• The third version /id/ is only used for regular verbs ending in T e.g. to start or in TE e.g. to create; and for regular verbs ending in D e.g. to hand or in DE e.g. to decide.

‘Simple Past’ (He worked) Versus ‘Present Perfect Simple’ (He has worked)

• The present perfect is used when there is no context/time in the situation.

• Example: He has spoken to the President.

• When? Where? How long for? Why?

• If I could answer any of those questions than I would NOT use the present perfect simple, I would use the simple past.

• When: He spoke to the President last week.

• Where: He spoke to the President at the inauguration ceremony.

• How long for: He spoke to the President for three minutes.

• Why: He spoke to the president because he wanted to impress his friends.

Did you know?Did you know we can NEVER use the present perfect simple to talk about dead people. All historical facts MUST always be recounted in the simple past.
