Un mot de l'éditriceA message from the Editor
Soyez patients.
Passez un superbe été – À bientôt !
Happy Spring 2013, fellow West Islanders! I would like to revisit an earlier theme - “Support your local businesses and community”!
The advertisers, whose nancial contributions make this publication possible, are, virtually without excep-tion - your “neighbours”. As such, they are more accessible, more conscientious and more dedicated than the supplier/vendor who lives elsewhere. We urge you to buy locally, whenever possible, and keep our local economy humming – bene tting everyone who lives here!
We, the publishers, try to “lead by example” and support several local, worthwhile community organiza-tions, one of which (“WICS”) appears on Page 26. Please consider donating, either, money or your labour to a charity of your choice– you will feel fantastic, make new friends and strengthen your sense of “belonging” to this community.
Several older readers called during the past year asking for “advice” on non-technical vendor/supplier issues - which I was happy to provide. Ensuing correspondence with one of these callers brought forth the suggestion that I should begin a “Just Ask Karen” column in the magazine!
Well, that’s not in the cards for now but I will be pleased to accept calls and inquiries from readers about any subject relating to our community, its services and our advertisers. I’m easy to reach: 514.421.3484 or [email protected].
Lately, other readers have asked that we add a “Pet” section (West Islanders are great pet lovers!) and, I see that in our future. However, it takes time to nd reliable, credible owners/operators (such as our pet-re-lated advertiser on Page 24) so, please be patient.
Have a Super Summer - I’ll see you around!

Fluent in the Language of Success
Sure… a lot of people are talking about Communications Anima’s individualized language training approach. And, with good reason.
Since 1982, Communications Anima has proven to be West Island’s leader in professional language training in oral and written French and English.
Learning a second language requires top-notch one-on-one personalized instruction. The West Island’s Communi-cations Anima Language Center is a family-owned acade-my that offers a full range of professionally designed and taught language courses.
The curriculum covers private instruction, test prepara-tion for the OLF (Of ce québécois de la langue française), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and other language exams as well as customized courses for corpora-
tions such as Bombardier, Mer-ck Frosst and P zer, to name a few.
Such courses provide train-ing that focuses on the specif-ic terminology used in various professions.
Yet Communications Ani-ma offers a one-on-one learn-ing approach that cannot be matched by large institutions. The staff of instructors at Ani-ma has the professional expe-rience, as well as the educa-tional background, required to teach everyone from foreign students to working profession-als seeking a promotion or a career change, and students of all ages.
“For many years, I took French courses at the free government centers but felt that I wasn’t pro-gressing at all. I had the same
experience with courses offered through the universities; I was so discouraged and frustrated because I was constant-ly placed in large classrooms with mixed groups of students ... Communications Anima is the reason why I am now able to speak and write with con dence. Their approach to teaching is realistic, practical and effective. Thank you Ani-ma!” (Dr. Edward Hoodfar, D.D.S. Dental Surgeon, Olympic Dental Centre)

Un unsolicited testimonial: “...I learned more in 5 private classes with Masoud than I have in the 4 other 40-hour classes elsewhere! Once I understood the logic I was able to learn. ank you for making it so quick & easy!” (Karen S.)
» (Karen S.)

KEEPING AQUARIUMS & PONDS CLEAN & CLEAR: Japanese Black Trapdoor Snails now locally
available...at wholesale prices!
Aqua-Eco is a West Island based company importing Japanese Black Trapdoor Snails for local aquarium and pond owners. Japa-nese Black Trapdoor Snails (Viviparus malleatus) have been bred to be voracious algae- and sludge-eaters and their presence in aquariums and ponds is the most effective and least expensive method of maintaining a healthy environment for your fish and an odour-free one for you. They are a live-bear-ing species producing about 30 offspring during their lifetime and won’t overwhelm their environment with their numbers such as the egg-laying snail species do.
FOR AQUARIUM OWNERS: • They will help keep your water, plants and glass clean and clear. • They act as an early-warning system for unhealthy water conditions and/or poor circulation by rising to the top of the water level. • They require very little care. (Adding some boiled , calcium- rich vegetables occasionally will help them keep their shells strong and healthy.) • For typically effective results, order 1 snail for every 10 gallons (or fraction) of water. • Overall, these snails are less expen sive than adding weekly algaecide. FOR POND OWNERS: • They will help keep your water, plants, plant-pots and pond sidewalls clean and clear. • They act as an early-warning system for unhealthy water conditions and/or poor circulation by rising to the top of the water level. • They will survive our West Island win ters in outdoor ponds. • They require no care whatsoever. • Japanese Trapdoor Snails will not travel out of their ponds. • They will keep your pond plants groomed with no damage to live plants.
USEFUL STATISTICS • Minimum tank/pond Size: 10 gals • Care Level: Easy to none • Temperament: Peaceful • Water Conditions: 68-85° F, (Will survive our cold winters in out door ponds) • Max. Size: 3” • Color Form: Black, Tan • Diet: Omnivore • Origin: Asia, Burma, Thailand • Family: Viviparidae

1-in-5 West Islanders employs a butler. True or False?
FALSE! The truth is that 1 in 5 West Islanders needs the help of a community group each year,” said Caroline Tison, Executive Director of West Island Com-munity Shares. “Our mission is to make sure they find the help they need close to home.”
West Island Community Shares pro-vides crucial, recurrent funding to 36 local commu-nity groups that offer services to residents coping with cancer, autism, teens in crisis, isolated seniors, bullying substance abuse and more.
West Island Community Shares distributes 100% of funds raised to the groups it supports.True or False?TRUE! “18 corporate partners cover our operational
costs, so 100% of donations received goes to the groups we support,” added Ms. Tison. More than 40,000 res-idents turn to these groups for help each year. Here is one success story:
You can be a hero in your community. True or False? TRUE! “Our donors are true heroes to the resi-dents in need in the West Island,” added Ms. Tison.

“I honestly do not know where I’d be if ANEB was not there for me. I have come such a way from the shattered and broken girl I was and that is thanks to ANEB and its wonderful caring volunteers.”
1 résident de l’Ouest-de-l’Île sur 5 a un majordome. Vrai ou faux?
FAUX !

Le Wellesley’s 4th annu-al “So Chic” fashion show to raise funds for Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada was held on February 23, 2013. Our theme – Beauty Has No Age – was inspired by the 36 models and local re-tailers who participated. One of our models, Mrs. Florence LeBlanc started her career at the age of 18 by organizing fashion shows for D’Allairds. 83 years later, she made her rst appearance as a model with grace and elegance.
Join us for our Health & Wellness Trade show on April 20th where healthcare experts will be on site to provide in-formation on maintaining au-tonomy and good health. e goal of the show is to improve the quality of life of the seniors in our community.
Our traditional Victorian High Tea will take place on May 26th. Come enjoy a cup of tea and treats you might nd in an English tea room.
On June 14th, Le “Wellesley Wabbits” will be joined by other Chartwell residences in the West Island Relay for Life to raise funds for cancer research. Le Wellesley has participated in this event for the past several years, raising funds by sponsoring some of the events, selling luminaries and in walking with survivors to rejoice in their success.
Join us on August 9th for an evening with the Tuxedo Swing Band – dance, clap, sing and sway to the familiar tunes of the Big Bands!
Le Wellesley, the place to nd culture, fun and elegant senior living!!
