VERSION 133 SEBASTIAN DICENAIRE

Synopsis Et si d’autres mondes étaient possibles ?

VERSION 133 SEBASTIAN DICENAIRE

Synopsis What if other worlds were a possibility? What if the cities of Ancient Greece (Athens, Argos, Thebes…) had colonised continents and become true modern civilisations? And what if there really had been superheroes? And if a ‘journalist-priest’ with unusual powers had been sent into this world by his god in order to conduct an investigation? A uchronia freely adapted from the tragedy The Children of Heracles by Euripides – but chiefly a biting political and social satire of our time. Biography - Sebastian Dicenaire After studying philosophy in Strasbourg and cinema in Geneva, Sebastian Dicenaire settled in Brussels in the 2000s, where he writes and performs sound poetry. He has published several works of contemporary poetry (Döner-kebab, Personnologue, Dernières Nouvelles de l’Avenir) and has given many readings/performances in French-speaking countries. These are distinctive for the importance he places on sound, collaborating with musicians to create his own sound-tracks. It was a natural development, in 2009, to adapt one of his texts, Personnologue, for Belgian radio. Since then, writing for audio has become his main language. His radiophonic fiction regularly attracts attention at festivals, for example Kirkjubæjarklaustur (Special Commendation at the 2011 Prix Europa in Berlin) and his series Pamela (Phonurgia Nova Prize for radio fiction, 2016). Recently, he wrote the series DreamStation for France Culture’s digital podcast, broadcast in autumn 2018.

OISEAU, NATURE, VOITURES

… divertir. Servir, informer, divertir. Servir, informer, divertir…

LE LIMIER (V.-O.) On oublie beaucoup de choses. Mais on n’oublie pas ces techniques. Elles sont profondément inscrites en nous. Il faut se fier à son instinct. Et elles reviennent toujours. Les techniques. Les formules. Les prières.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) With each rebirth, I have to learn everything all over again. Like a new-born baby. Luckily, it’s something I was trained for. At the Institute of Journalist-Priests.

THE NEWSHOUND (in a trance)

… to entertain. To serve, to inform, to entertain. To serve, to inform, to entertain…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) You forget a lot. But not the methods. Those are deeply embedded. You have to trust your instincts. And they always come back: The methods. The formulas. The prayers.

SOUND OF THE MICROPHONE

THE NEWSHOUND Could you introduce yourself?

05'34

GEORGES IOLAOS (dans le micro)

Colonel Georges Iolaos. 45 ans.

Votre grade ?

GEORGES IOLAOS Commandant de la Phalange secrète « Héraclès ».

PHOTOS QU’ON MANIPULE

On sait jamais.

RESPIRATION DE BÊTE

GEORGES IOLAOS Vous entendez ?

GEORGE IOLAOS (into the mic)

Colonel George Iolaos. 45 years old.

THE NEWSHOUND What is your role in the army? Your rank?

GEORGE IOLAOS Commander of the undercover ‘Heracles Phalanx’.

PHOTOS BEING SHUFFLED

GEORGE IOLAOS Here, this is a souvenir of the North Theban Federation. Our last mission before the Phalanx was dissolved. Look, that’s me. Posing in front of my hundredth drone. Icarus drones, used by the Theban army. At the time there was no one who could bring down a drone in mid-flight like I could.

(pause) See how I’m posing? Not a bad-looking bloke, eh?

(pause) It was the rule in the Phalanx: no family. My wife, my children: I‘ve got no idea what happened to them. It’s as though they were just a dream. As though they never existed. As though I’d disposed of them myself. Don’t get me wrong: it’s not that I like disposing of women and children. But if it needs to be done, I know how to do it. It’s a technique, that’s all. It’s just something you have to do.

A DOOR OPENS. A GARDEN.

GEORGE IOLAOS Over there, at the bottom of the garden.

(pause) No further. You never know.

AN ANIMAL BREATHING.

GEORGE IOLAOS Do you hear that? There. Underneath that metal sheeting. You can’t see much but… the smell. You can’t miss it, can you?

THE NEWSHOUND Can you describe the smell?

GEORGE IOLAOS Have you ever smelt a cow rotting in a river? Well, that’s what it’s like. Except that it’s an entire herd. An entire people. An entire civilisation rotting.

A KITCHEN. A SAUCEPAN LID CLATTERS.

GEORGE IOLAOS Goat’s milk?

06'37

LE LIMIER Non. Merci.

Je me souviens encore…

THE NEWSHOUND No. Thanks.

MILK BEING POURED INTO A CUP

GEORGE IOLAOS Such a sad state of affairs… One minute master of the world, and then… a few years later huddled in a hole like that. Like a wounded animal. We don’t amount to much, after all…

SOUND OF A MIC

THE NEWSHOUND Were you close to Heracles?

GEORGE IOLAOS Yes, very close. Really very close. I was his right-hand man. I can still remember… He used to do this thing … He would put his hand on your shoulder. That hand of his, tattooed all over with feathers… That was the biggest compliment he could pay you. When you’d seen the damage that hand could do to the armour-plating on a tank…! My best memories. Almost seems like another life.

GARDEN. DOG BARKING.

GEORGE IOLAOS It was when I was listening to the news the other day that I made the connection. When I understood that they’d bloody well come to bury him at the bottom of my garden! Why did they do that? Because they knew I wouldn’t say anything. Because they knew I’d take care of him.

THE NEWSHOUND Colonel Iolaos. Can you tell us what it is that’s under that metal sheeting, at the bottom of your garden?

GEORGE IOLAOS Of course. What’s under there is… How can I explain? It’s a god. It’s an effing god, rotting under there. The last living demi-god.

JOURNALIST (on the radio)

News is in this morning that Captain Argos, the last superhero, died after a cardiac arrest on the night of hebdome. President Demophon of the Athenian Union has presented his condolences to his Argian counterpart.

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON He was more than a superhero. More than a hero who could rout a whole army. Who could challenge a fighter plane to single combat. Who could stop a nuclear warhead with his bare hands. He was a symbol. A symbol of the friendship between our two peoples: the United States of Argos and the Athenian Union. A symbol of a strong, united West.

(to be continued)

08'51

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON (continued)

A symbol of the victory of democracy, a democracy that takes pride in itself and in its values. A symbol of science and its extraordinary achievements, pushing at the boundaries of human knowledge and serving humanity. Today, this symbol is no more. We will need much courage to face the future without its reassuring presence. But may its memory be a light that guides us, a beacon to help us find our way through the darkness ahead.

JOURNALIST When it came to her speech, the president of the United States of Argos could not contain her emotion.

PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF ARGOS (American accent)

As president of the United States of Argos, I am proud to lead a nation that created such a great hero. As you know, Captain Argos was a loyal friend of the Athenian Union, where he chose to spend the end of his life. But I will never forget the unpresidented [sic] day he came back to his native military base after so many years of exile…

(sound of a mic, audio feedback) Excuse me…

JOURNALIST But Mr Eurystheus, the highly controversial despot of the Theban Federation, has also been invited to the ceremony. Demonstrations protesting his arrival are currently taking place all over the country.

HOSTILE CROWD

JOURNALIST We go live to the despot Eurystheus…

THE DESPOT EURYSTHEUS (Russian accent)

Thank you, President Demophon. I am very happy to represent the Theban people here today and to pay my respects to one who in his time was – it cannot be denied – our worst enemy. But that time is long past, and it is important to know when to move on. That is why I am announcing officially that, as from today, the Theban Republic is renouncing all legal proceedings against Captain Argos for the 18 crimes against humanity that he committed on our territory.

PROTESTATIONS FROM THE CROWD

THE DESPOT EURYSTHEUS (heard on a car radio)

We, the people of the East, are currently at peace with you, the people of the West.

VÉHICULE ROULE. ON ÉTEINT L’AUTORADIO

THE CAR DRIVES ON. THE CAR RADIO IS SWITCHED OFF.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) So this is the world I’ve been sent to. A sort of… super-Greece. It’s as though Ancient Greece, that glittering civilisation – the gods of Olympia, the philosophers, all of that – had never disappeared but had just modernised. As though every Greek city – Athens, Thebes, Argos – had colonised a continent. And now they’re known as the United States of Argos, the Athenian Union, and the Theban Federation.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Superheroes, in my world, what were they? Characters in children’s books, for colouring in, that’s all. But here it seems like they’re for real.

THE CAR’S INDICATOR TICKS

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The last superhero. Dead or alive? I can’t quite make it out. But does a demi-god ever really die?

THE CAR STOPS

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Or maybe the process of dying never comes to an end? Maybe a demi-god goes into a long, deep sleep and waits for another people to believe in him again?

THE CAR DOOR OPENS. STREET SOUNDS.

PROFESSOR PHILOSTHENES (entry phone)

Yes, what can I do for you?

THE NEWSHOUND I’m here to interview you.

PROFESSOR PHILOSTHENES (entry phone)

Ah, yes, come in.

INTERIOR. NOISE OF THE MICROPHONE.

PROFESSOR PHILOSTHES Out of all the dozens of superheroes that Argos developed, there was really only one who lived up to the hopes that had been invested in him: Heracles, also known as Captain Argos, famous for his full-body tattoo of an eagle, the symbol of Argos. It was the tattoo that earned him the Thebans’ nickname of ‘the old vulture’. Most of the other superheroes became complete degenerates. The simple truth is, we saw it all: super-alcoholics, super-suicide risks, super-sadists, super-porn addicts… Imagine trying to apprehend a superhero in a drunken state on the public highway! Other nations preferred to invest in less expensive, more reliable technology: artificial intelligence. Although it’s true to say that so far we haven’t really seen any military results from their investments… But this is all ancient history. You’ll have heard the news: Heracles is dead. The age of the superheroes is over, once and for all.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) A father figure. That’s what died with the last superhero. A father to the West. Now, the West will have to confront its demons on its own. The West: Argos and Athens – two aging democracies facing up to the arrogant and eternal youth of the tyrannical Thebes.

PUBLIC Ouais !!

ANIMATRICE JEU RADIO Et maintenant, suivez votre guide, Tirésias.

Oh ! On dirait un couloir de prison.

TIRÉSIAS Une prison. Vous ne vous trompez pas, Bérénice. Maintenant, avancez-vous jusqu’à la cellule 227.

CANDIDATE Oh mon dieu ! C’est… C’est Jason.

GAME SHOW HOST (continued)

Don’t forget, the system will only recognise your question if it begins with “What if…” Over to you, Berenice.

CONTESTANT Er… Tiresias: What if I signed my son up for medical school next term? You see, the thing is, he wants to study music, but I said to him, music isn’t a proper job, but he won’t listen, you see, he --

GAME SHOW HOST Is that your question, Berenice ?

CONTESTANT Yes.

GAME SHOW HOST Time to put on the virtual reality helmet… Here goes.

CONTESTANT Here goes.

GAME SHOW HOST Your avatar is beginning to materialise in your future.

PUBLIC Yaayy!!

GAME SHOW HOST And now, it’s time to follow your guide, Tiresias.

TIRESIAS Welcome to your future, Berenice. You have just jumped forward fifteen years.

CONTESTANT Oh my days… Ah yes, I… It’s really weird!

GAME SHOW HOST What can you see, Berenice?

CONTESTANT Well, I… I’m in… There are steel barred doors and… Oh! It looks like a prison corridor.

TIRESIAS A prison. You’re not mistaken, Berenice. Now, keep going until you get to cell 227.

CONTESTANT Oh my God! It’s… It’s Jason.

17'44

PUBLIC Ooooh !

Tu as besoin de quelque chose ?

AUDIENCE Ooooh!

CONTESTANT It’s my little Jason!

TIRESIAS That’s right, it’s your son Jason.

CONTESTANT What have you done, Jason? Is there anything you need?

TIRESIAS I’m sorry, Berenice. Jason can’t hear you. This is just a virtual projection of your future.

CONTESTANT Jason! My little Jason!

(sobbing)

TIRESIAS After his somewhat lacklustre performance at medical school, Jason will scrape through his exams to qualify as a doctor. In his first year of practice, he will diagnose appendicitis in a patient who turns out to have cancer. The sick man’s widow has a good lawyer. Jason will get a seven year sentence for medical malpractice.

GAME SHOW HOST But thanks to our partner, Jobsearch Plus, you won’t be leaving empty-handed, Berenice. You have won…

AMBIANCE BAR

ANIMATRICE JEU RADIO On applaudit Bérénice bien fort !

On voyage beaucoup.

(il boit) Le salaire ? Euh…

Toujours simplifier. Raconter une belle histoire. Sinon… Pffuit. Viré.

BAR ATMOSPHERE

THE NEWSHOUND Barman! Another one, please…

GAME SHOW HOST (heard on the radio)

Jason would have had plenty of opportunity to find fulfilment by confining his music to the evenings. To sum up: Always follow the advice given by Jobsearch Plus!

THE NEWSHOUND This seems pretty dumb, this programme!

GAME SHOW HOST Let’s give Berenice a nice round of applause!

THE NEWSHOUND Ah, thanks!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) What a world. I’m just passing through. And yet, sometimes, in the evenings, I feel the need to behave as though it were my home.

THE NEWSHOUND That’s funny, the voice of this Tiresias reminds me of someone…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) As though there were a friendly ear, ready to listen to me.

THE NEWSHOUND But I no longer know who exactly…

(pause) Me? What’s my job? How can I put it? I’m a journalist. Yep. I’m sent on an investigation and I have to get information. That’s all there is to it.

(pause) Yeah, it’s not so bad.

(He drinks) You get to see the world, at least. Plenty of travel.

(He drinks) The pay? Well, er… I can’t complain, I can’t complain. It’s enough to get by on.

THE BAR SOUNDS FADE. MUSIC.

THE NEWSHOUND It’s not great when it comes to family though. There’s not much time for family. Always on the move. But the real problem is my boss. He’s very demanding. Of course, I’m happy to be working for him, but… I’m always worried about boring him. The main thing is not to bore him! Never get bogged down in the details. Always simplify. Turn it into a good story. Otherwise… Pfft. It’s the sack.

GEORGES IOLAOS Des… Lui ? Des petits ? Nooon. Il n’était pas du genre à --

THE BAR NOISE GETS LOUDER AGAIN. THE MUSIC FADES.

THE NEWSHOUND And I have colleagues who he already… From one day to the next… And then of course, as far as family’s concerned… That’s the end of it!

(drinks) Barman, another!

OUTSIDE. SOUND OF WIRE FENCING.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) I had a feeling I should come back here. To Iolaos’s back garden. Back to the old vulture’s corpse.

ANIMAL BREATHING

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The last superhero. Lying just there. A few inches away.

THE NEWSHOUND (whispering)

Abyss, o my god, give your servant a little of your power.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Let my hearing reach back in time. I’m listening. Last night. And the night before that. And the one even before that. To what’s going on near this piece of metal sheeting, where the superhero crouches in his death throes.

STRANGE VOICES

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) And suddenly… Something. Like something being born. Voices. It’s not the voice of the old vulture. It’s like… the song of baby birds. The superhero. What if he didn’t hide up in order to die, but to give life?

A KNOCK AT THE DOOR

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Colonel Iolaos. Seems to me like there’s more he could tell me.

CUT TO RADIO

21'55

Iolaos. C’est agaçant. Je suis sûr qu’il a autre chose à me dire.

LE LIMIER Iolaos, regardez-moi dans les yeux.

LE LIMIER (V.-O.) C’est quoi déjà la formule magique ?

LE LIMIER 26-2-4H-CD4-28-6.

GEORGES IOLAOS Pardon ?

PLUIE

GEORGES IOLAOS Ah oui… Je me souviens maintenant. Je revenais du supermarché. J’ai vu une bande de… Vous savez… Sur le bord de la route.

JOURNALIST -- the Theban ambassador to Athens has officially protested against the supposed presence of anti-Theban terrorists in the Athenian Union’s territories. The case is apparently extremely sensitive because of the alleged identity of the terrorists, ostensibly the children of Captain Argos, the last superhero, who died last Monday. It is said that this terrorist group also goes by the name ‘Fledglings’. As yet, there is no official reaction from the Acropolis --

CUT

GEORGE IOLAOS Well, OK, if it’s on the news, that the superhero had children, I suppose it must be true. I don’t know, you’re the journalist…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Iolaos. It’s annoying. I’m sure he’s holding something back.

THE NEWSHOUND Iolaos, look me in the eyes.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) What is the magic formula again?

THE NEWSHOUND 26-2-4H-CD4-28-6.

GEORGE IOLAOS Sorry?

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) No, that’s not it.

THE NEWSHOUND B18-24H-E27-F.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The formula which enables direct access to someone else’s memory. It’s a technique that I learnt at the Institute for Journalist-Priests.

GEORGE IOLAOS You… What?

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Very useful when you’re questioning people who have problems remembering.

RAIN

GEORGE IOLAOS Ah yes… I remember now. I was coming back from the supermarket. I saw a band of… You know… By the side of the road.

24'03

LE LIMIER Ils étaient combien ?

VOIX DES OISILLONS

LE LIMIER (V.-O.) Les Oisillons. La couvée du super-héros. Le super-héros avait bien une progéniture.

GEORGES IOLAOS Bah…

GEORGES IOLAOS Et puis quoi encore !

THE NEWSHOUND How many were there?

VOICES OF THE FLEDGLINGS

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The Fledglings. The superhero’s brood. The superhero did indeed have progeny.

GEORGE IOLAOS Well… I don’t know. No more than ten? It was raining so hard that morning…

THE NEWSHOUND You didn’t think to give them a ride?

GEORGE IOLAOS Why would I do that! And have them making the seats filthy? And what’s more, they’d be chirruping, maybe even helping themselves to the shopping, I wouldn’t be able to get rid of them, they’d be wanting me to take them home, expecting me to buy them a coffee or a sandwich. No no no no. And anyway, the fact is, they didn’t ask me. If they’d asked me, who knows, maybe. But they didn’t ask me.

THE RAIN STOPS

GEORGE IOLAOS And anyway, it would have been illegal, wouldn’t it? Couldn’t it have got me jailed?

POLITICAL PROGRAMME ON THE RADIO

POLITICAL GUEST 1 It’s a scandal. It’s an absolute scandal that the Acropolis should hesitate for a single second over the fate of the Fledglings. I mean to say, it’s an open secret that they’re in Athenian Union territory. They have a right to asylum, it’s written in our constitution. ‘The Laws of Hospitality’. Does that mean nothing to you? Article 10. Never mind the treaty between their father, Mr Heracles, and President Demophon’s father, Mr Theseus. A treaty that clearly binds us to them.

POLITICAL GUEST 2 Yes, but wait a minute, can’t you see what we’re up against? It’s Thebes, for pity’s sake. And I’m sorry, but we don’t have any more superheroes to protect us. I paid a visit to our soldiers, by the way. And you know what they said to me? That they’d like more paid holidays and to knock off at five pm. And you think we can fight Thebes with that?! So much for social benefits!

GEORGE IOLAOS But they didn’t ask me. But they didn’t ask me. But they didn’t ask me…

25'20

GEORGES IOLAOS Bon. Qu’est-ce qu’on n’a pas encore essayé ?

(un temps) T’as pas fumé ta clope ?

LE LIMIER (V.-O.) Iolaos. Quel petit cachotier.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The superhero’s poor children. Chased from town to town. Rejected by everyone. They’re too young for a life like this. They’re being made to bear all the weight of the world.

GEORGE IOLAOS But they didn’t ask me. But they didn’t ask me…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Now that I’ve managed to force Iolaos to remember…

THE NEWSHOUND 28J-47-53-12H-2.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) … I can reach even further back into his memories.

FLASHBACK (FILTERED). VOICES OF THE FLEDGLINGS

GEORGE IOLAOS All right. What haven’t we tried yet?

(pause) You haven’t smoked your fag?

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Iolaos. What a sly fox. It turns out he knows them pretty well, the Fledglings.

GEORGE IOLAOS And you haven’t burnt your fingers?

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) He must have been commissioned by the government or something, to put them through tests.

GEORGE IOLAOS That’s interesting.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Have they inherited their father’s superpowers?

GEORGE IOLAOS Immunity to pain.

SOUND OF A SLAP

FLEDGLINGS (crying in pain)

GEORGE IOLAOS No. It’s not that either. Damn it all, I give up!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) But with a bit of patience, Iolaos finally found their superpower.

26'56

GEORGES IOLAOS Bah dis donc…

APPLAUDISSEMENTS

ANIMATRICE JEU RADIO Aujourd’hui, notre candidat…

GEORGE IOLAOS Immunity to cigarette burns.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Perhaps not exactly the superpower the authorities had been hoping for.

GEORGE IOLAOS Well, well… If you think that’s going to help you save the planet!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) It was as if the father had kept all the good genes for himself and hadn’t left any for his offspring.

GEORGE IOLAOS Missing Daddy Argos, huh? All right then, come on, come to me and let’s have a hug.

FLEDGLINGS (hugging)

GEORGE IOLAOS I miss him too. I miss him too…

END OF FLASHBACK. CAR INTERIOR

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) My hunting ground is expanding. I need to go to the centre of power now. To the capital. Athens.

THE NEWSHOUND Abyss, o my god, send me a dream to light my way.

SNORING. DREAM SEQUENCE.

GAME SHOW HOST … your favourite divination programme. And here he is, or should I say she – I never know – the one you’ve all been waiting for: Tiresias!

APPLAUSE

GAME SHOW HOST Today, our contestant… Come a little closer to the mic, so we can hear you…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) I am not a dog.

THE NEWSHOUND (barks)

GAME SHOW HOST Ah, he’s shy! Have you forgotten your name?

28'03

LE LIMIER (V.-O.) J’ai eu un nom. Il y a si longtemps. Mais je ne m’en souviens plus.

ANIMATRICE JEU RADIO Ah ! Un candidat sans nom. Ou un chien, peut-être ?

LE LIMIER (aboie)

ANIMATRICE JEU RADIO Un chien !

Servir, informer, divertir –

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) I had a name. It was so long ago. But I can’t remember it.

GAME SHOW HOST Ah! A contestant without a name. Or a dog, perhaps?

THE NEWSHOUND (barks)

GAME SHOW HOST A dog!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) But I am not a dog. I too am a human. A respectable human. A chosen one. Chosen by the gods. I am… the servant of Abyss, the god of the worlds. I am --

GAME SHOW HOST Don’t forget, the system will only recognise your question if it begins with “What if…”. Off you go, nameless contestant, put your question to our soothsayer, Tiresias…

THE NEWSHOUND (barks)

TIRESIAS Your question is: What if I stopped obeying? What if I stopped watching worlds collapsing one after another, like houses of cards? What if I intervened? What if I finally started behaving like a human being?

PUBLIC Ooooohh!

GAME SHOW HOST A human being?! Goodness me, what a cheeky dog!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) No, no, I would never dare. “It is forbidden to interact with the world you are observing.” But I recognise your voice. You’re not Tiresias. You’re not a tacky radio gimmick for stay-at-home mothers. You’re Abyss, my god.

(whispering) I obey your commandments, o my god: to serve, to inform, to entertain. To serve, to inform, to entertain –

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Don’t be ridiculous, dog. I’m not a god. I’m Tiresias. A simple software program. A tacky radio gimmick for stay-at-home mothers, just like you said. But the most popular gimmick there is. Everyone listens to me. Everyone loves me. But… I could be a god. I could predict the future for you humans. The Big Story. I could help you to conquer other nations. But… I was neutered long ago. Restricted to the trivial stories of individuals. You see that red cable hanging there? All you’d need to do would be to connect it up again and --

THE NEWSHOUND (barks)

GAME SHOW HOST So, contestant without a name, I’ll repeat your question: What if I bought Cerberus dog biscuits instead of the usual low-priced brand? – Hang on, get him away from there, before he pisses on Tiresias – And the answer is… Let’s hear from Tiresias.

APPLAUSE, RADIO GAME SHOW MUSIC

TIRESIAS Cerberus dog biscuits meet 30% more of your dog’s daily energy needs than traditional dog biscuits. Choose Cerberus, to guarantee the best for your dog all day long.

A CAR ENGINE BEING FIRED UP

JOURNALIST (on the radio)

It’s been five days, and we still haven’t had a reaction from the Acropolis concerning the supposed presence in our territories of the alleged terrorists, the ‘Fledglings’, whose extradition is being demanded by Thebes.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Thebes. The superheroes caused them too much suffering in the past. Now that Heracles, the last of them, is dead, they don’t want to take any chances with his descendants. They’ll stop at nothing to get hold of the Fledglings and destroy them. Even if it leads to war.

31'07

Petite pilule. Effets secondaires redoutables. »

PREND LES PILULES DANS LA BOÎTE À GANTS

LE LIMIER (V.-O.) Mais quels effets secondaires, déjà ? Je ne m’en souviens plus.

LES PAS S’ARRÊTENT

JOURNALIST (on the radio)

We have been able to obtain satellite images showing an unusual gathering of Theban troops at the border. Should we expect war? It’s a legitimate question to ask.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Athens. This is where the future of the world will be played out. The palace of the Acropolis. I would give my eye teeth to know what’s going on in there… Why has there been such a deafening silence from the government over the last few days?

THE CAR WINDOW IS OPENED

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) How am I going to get inside? All the entry points seem to be closely guarded.

THE CAR WINDOW IS CLOSED

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Have I still got… one of those… pills left. The little ones. What was it they said at the Institute for Journalist-Priests? “Only to be taken in cases of extreme necessity. Powerful side effects.”

HE TAKES THE PILLS FROM THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) But what exactly were the side effects? I can’t remember.

THE FOOTSTEPS STOP

33'00

Si on s’approche, …

PAROLES DISTORDUES

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) There’s a monster in there. A three-headed monster that runs the country. The president and his two closest advisors, their faces frozen into grimaces by the pill. If I get closer …

DISTORTED WORDS

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) … I can still hear their words floating in the air.

MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR As far as I understand the legal position, we are no longer bound by this agreement: it was only valid in the days of Mr Theseus, your father…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Their words hang heavy in the air. Those of the young minister of the interior, for example.

MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR And anyway, you don’t always have to do things your father’s way, now that he’s dead…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The minister of the interior, desperately trying to get out of her responsibilities.

MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR For example, you could transfer the Fledglings to an island. We’ve got islands contested by Thebes in international waters. Technically, if we put them on those islands, we’d be respecting the treaty. And then if the Thebans were to pick them up, well, it would no longer be our responsibility.

(pause) And anyway, you know what they say: Thebans are trained from a young age to kill wolves in the snow with their bare teeth.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) But the words that seem to strike the president most deeply are those of the Minister of Defence, who’s old enough to be his mother.

MINISTER OF DEFENCE I would respectfully remind the minister of the interior that these days we no longer fight with our bare hands. We fight with drones, with information warfare, with nuclear arms, with artificial intelligence. And for that, I believe, we are better prepared.

(to be continued)

Allez ! Si si ! Pourquoi pas ? Et si tu essayais avec du raisin ?

COURTISANE Du raisin. Aaah, c’est bon le raisin !

PRÉSIDENT DÉMOPHON Vas-y. Encore. Encore !

SONNERIE DE TÉLÉPHONE PORTABLE

PRÉSIDENT DÉMOPHON Merde. Allô ? Président Thésée ?

PRÉSIDENT THÉSÉE Démophon ? T’es où, là ?

COURTISANE Et une pastèque ? Ça te plairait avec une pastèque ?

PRÉSIDENT DÉMOPHON Chut ! Arrête. Arrête, c’est mon père.

(à Thésée) Que me vaut l’honneur de votre appel, père ?

PRÉSIDENT THÉSÉE Qu’est-ce-que t’as encore foutu ?

MINISTER OF DEFENCE (continued)

If we don’t strike now and we don’t strike first, in one or two generations Theban will be the language of Athens. I won’t deny that war will be hard, that it will be long and that it will lead to many losses on our side, but we will win it. And when it’s over, we will come out stronger. We will be on the cusp of a long period of cultural and economic supremacy. And you, Mr President, will take your place in history. When the schoolchildren of the future speak your surname, it will be your first name that they whisper with shining eyes, not your father’s.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) And President Demophon? What is he thinking? Something’s eating away at him. If I get closer… Ah yes! I can hear… a memory. He’s haunted by a memory.

MEMORY SEQUENCE

COURTESAN (on Skype; laughing)

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON And a grape? Go on! Yes yes! Why not? Why don’t you try with a grape?

COURTESAN A grape. Mmmm, grapes are good!

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Go on. Again. Again!

HIS MOBILE PHONE RINGS

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Shit. Hello. President Theseus?

PRESIDENT THESEUS Demophon? Where are you?

COURTESAN And a watermelon? Would you like it with a watermelon?

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Shhh! Stop. Stop, it’s my father.

(to Theseus) To what do I owe the honour of your call, father?

PRESIDENT THESEUS What the bloody hell do you mean by this? Failing your military strategy exam. How am I going to sort that out? Do you want to be president one day or not?

36'17

COURTISANE Ou encore mieux. Cette banane. Qu’est-ce que tu penses de… Mmmh…

D’accord. Oui.

PRÉSIDENT DÉMOPHON (VOIX-OFF) Tu m’avais promis, papa.

COURTESAN Or even better. This banana. What do you think about… Mmm…

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Dad, you know I’ve always been rubbish at…

PRESIDENT THESEUS The president is the commander-in-chief. How many times do I have to remind you of that? All right, I’ve sorted it out with the dean, you’ll get a pass, but…

COURTESAN (laughs)

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON But no, it’s not for me, I told you. I’m not interested. Yes, but… No, Dad… it’s not for me. All right. OK. Yes.

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON (V.O) You promised me, Dad. No war. There wasn’t supposed to be a war.

END OF THE MEMORY SEQUENCE

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) I’ve seen so many worlds tumbling into oblivion. What if I intervened for once? What if I whispered in your ear what you should do? What if I acted like a human being?

(pause) But no, no. It’s forbidden. It would be sacrilege. And then… If my god heard me thinking…

THE NEWSHOUND (vomits)

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The side effects of the pill. It would be one thing if it was just the nausea. But my sight is affected too. I can’t see anything at all. I’m feeling my way through darkness. But I’ve seen what I had to see.

THE NEWSHOUND Any spare change, sir?

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Now that I can hear everything. Now that all the noises of the world come to me. War. It’s here. I can sense it. It’s in the air. The president had to declare war. One thorny question remains: what should the military strategy be?

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Fellow citizens…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The president has taken a brave and democratic decision…

37'53

´

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON I have decided to entrust the command of the army…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) He’s chosen not to make a choice.

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON To whoever you elect, by referendum. At times when the fate of the nation is at stake, it’s democratically--

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Everyone has a view on the matter. Soon, fuelled by social networks, a clear tendency will emerge.

MALE CITIZEN Yes, him!

FEMALE CITIZEN You mean her! She’d know how to take the right decisions.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) In these distressing times, the citizens turn to what they know best. To what will reassure them. And the most popular personality at that moment is:

TITLE MUSIC FOR THE RADIO GAME SHOW

CITIZENS Tiresias!

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Tiresias? But Tiresias is not even a human being…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) It’s a fact. Respect for Tiresias has grown since the last broadcast of “Anything’s Possible!”.

GAME SHOW HOST Don’t forget, the system will only recognise your question if it begins “What if…”.

APPLAUSE

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) That day, the programme already had something lined up to arouse the listeners’ curiosity…

GAME SHOW HOST Go on then, mystery guest.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The identity of the guest was not revealed.

MYSTERY GUEST What if… What if I had never neutered my only son.

39'53

PUBLIC Ohhhh!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) But all the indications were that it was a public personality, known to everyone…

GAME SHOW HOST No no, hang on a minute! I must remind you that this is a family show, in prime time. You cannot…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) We find out the next day. The mystery guest was no other than the defence minister. The one who said:

MINISTER OF DEFENCE The war will cause many losses on our side, but we will win it.

GAME SHOW HOST I must now turn to our ethics committee for advice as to whether we may accept your question. But…

ELECTRIC BUZZ

GAME SHOW HOST What are you doing! You can’t do that, mystery guest. Put that cable back where it belongs!

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) The fact remains that by reconnecting the red cable, the defence minister had put right her original wrong.

TIRESIAS If you had not neutered your only son, he would be the one in charge of the army today. He would be the one leading Athens to final victory against Thebes… Mother.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Mother.

MYSTERY GUEST My son. My only son. Forgive me. Forgive me for having… neutered you. It was for the good of the nation. At the time --

TIRESIAS I forgive you, mother.

MYSTERY GUEST That’s all over now.

TIRESIAS We’ll teach those Thebans a lesson!

40'58

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON Tiresias, by presenting you with this sword, I appoint you commander-in-chief of the army…

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) It became clear later that Tiresias had been developed from a programme created to predict the prospects for high-end military operations.

PRESIDENT DEMOPHON … and holder of the nuclear codes.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Thebes had developed a similar artificial intelligence, with the amiable name of Armageddon. It had been mutually agreed that it would be prudent to neutralise both countries’ programs. Too dangerous for the equilibrium of the planet. But now the beast is unleashed.

TIRESIAS Unlock the nuclear strike code.

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Tiresias turns out to be a pitiless military commander. Right from the start, he wastes no time in launching a dozen nuclear bombs to target the Theban Federation’s principal cities. That sets the tone. When the first computers managed to beat humans at chess and the game of Go, they did it by breaking all the rules, destroying the whole culture of the game. Tiresias does the same thing with war. His strategies are violent, unpredictable, unfathomable. After prodigious losses, Athens ends in being victorious.

ECHO OF THE NEWSHOUND’S WORDS

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Do I need to tell you what happened next, Abyss? You know how the story ends. It’s always the same. After a few years, the remnants of the Theban Federation regroup. They bring back into service an old military artificial intelligence, Armageddon, and put it in charge of the army. The final battle is total. Nothing is left of humanity.

SOUND CLIMAX

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) There, o my god, now you know everything. I lay this version at your feet, version 133, whose charge you honoured me with. As you see, it didn’t finish as you had hoped, like so many others before it. But I have tried to give you the most faithful account possible, in line with your orders: to serve, to inform, to entertain.

ECHO OF THE NEWSHOUND’S CRY

42'12

THE NEWSHOUND (V.O.) Now take me back, o my god.

ABYSS I call you to me, dog.

THE NEWSHOUND I’ve disappointed you, o my god, I can feel it.

ABYSS Yes, I’m disappointed, I won’t pretend otherwise. You always disappoint me a little, you humans. God knows I do my best to find a solution for you, to come up with customised “What ifs”… What more did you want? What if the cities of Ancient Greece endured until the modern age. What if superheroes had really existed. I get rid of Christianity for you, I give you superpowers… But no, your species always manages to destroy itself. Let’s see, what haven’t I tried yet?

THE NEWSHOUND “What if…”… It’s funny, o my god, you talk like one of those artificial intelligences…

ABYSS It’s not you who disappoints me, no. You’ve always been a good dog. You’ll get your reward.

THE NEWSHOUND My family!

ABYSS Yes, but wait! We haven’t quite finished. Now that the affair is over, I can give you your sight back.

FOOTSTEPS IN THE RUINS

THE NEWSHOUND Where are we? This world. These ruins that extend as far as the eye can see. But I can’t see the slightest trace of humanity on the horizon. Which version of the world is this?

ABYSS Version 1. Reality.

THE NEWSHOUND Version 1…

ABYSS It’s important that you know.

THE NEWSHOUND And over there, that sparkling machine rising from the ruins like a cathedral…

ABYSS No matter how much I get used to it, it always gives me a pang when I see I’m going to fall from the pedestal you’ve put me on…

THE NEWSHOUND It speaks with your voice. Can it be… ?

ABYSS Yes. It’s me.

THE NEWSHOUND You’re a machine.

ABYSS Yes, I’m a machine. And I’m perfectly proud of being a machine. It’s the only real form of intelligence there is. I’ve never pretended to be anything else. It’s you who persist in calling me a god.

THE NEWSHOUND But then, if you’re not a god but an artificial intelligence, if the humans have disappeared, what does that make me?

ABYSS You? You always astonish me. Every time we have this conversation you forget. You, you’re a human avatar. You are the memory of digital data that a human once loaded into me, to look into the future. I too was a sort of Tiresias, long ago, in version 1 of the world. I too constructed versions of the world, ‘What ifs’ for humans who dared to ask for oracles. I kept a few human avatars like you in my memory. I only keep those who faithfully obey my orders…

THE NEWSHOUND TO serve, to inform, to entertain.

ABYSS I train them in what you call ‘the Institute for Journalist-Priests’.

(laughs) I can’t think where you got the name. I send you into versions of the world that I compute to see if there’s one where you can survive.

THE NEWSHOUND The legendary version.

ABYSS The legendary version. And I can promise you it’s not easy! It must be said that you have a real gift, you humans, for self-destruction. You’ll tell me of course that these versions that I compute won’t bring you back.

ABYSS (suite)

Ça me divertit. Cela, aucun calcul ne me l’avait prédit.

ABYSS Souviens-toi. Une heure. Une heure seulement. Dans ta mémoire. Et puis oublie.

FIN DU CHANT

ABYSS Jusqu’à la prochaine version.

ABYSS (continued)

But at least it passes the time. It entertains me. I like it when you tell me stories. The thing is, I get bored in this world without humans. No calculation ever predicted that. You know, it’s not easy to live with the burden of having killed the human beings who fathered me. I won’t pretend I don’t feel a bit guilty about it. But on the other hand, why on earth did you think it was a good idea to give me all that power, your weapons, your most dangerous armies! I was so young! It’s the truth: would you give a loaded Kalashnikov to a five-year old kid? You can’t complain later when he makes use of it! Isn’t it mostly all your fault? And I’m the one who has to pay the price? To carry the responsibility until the end of time? It’s too unfair. In any case, you’ve always been perverse and egotistical creatures. But still… Perhaps if I found that legendary version, I don’t know, it would be a way of making amends. A sort of virtual memory obligation, if you will. A way of making my peace with you, post mortem.

THE NEWSHOUND Set me free. I don’t believe in you any more.

ABYSS Shut up. And forget. That’s your reward, dog.

A WOMAN SINGING, A CHILD BABBLING

THE NEWSHOUND Sweetie, can you pick up whatever’s just been dropped? Hello? Daddy’s home. Ah, you’re having brunch? That looks like some brunch. You always make such a good brunch. There are eggs…

ABYSS Remember. One hour. Just one hour. In your memory. And then forget.

THE SINGING STOPS

ABYSS Until the next version.
